S.THOMAS’COLLEGE AT GURUTALAWAOLD BOYS’ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT OF

THE 2013/2014 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEPRESENTED AT THE 55 TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

SATURDAY 22 ND FEBRUARY 2014

INTRODUCTION

On behalf of the Executive Committee of 2013/2014, I take pleasure in presenting the secretary’s report for the period concerned to the General Membership.

We achieved many difficult targets for the benefit of the association due to the unstinted support rendered by the general membership.

54 TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ON 16 February 2013 AND REUNION CELEBRATIONS

The reunion celebration commenced with the arrival of old boys on Friday, February 15, 2013. A head count was taken at the main gate as well as in the dormitories, for the purpose of catering of food. It is always the intention of the Ex-Co to provide the best facilities and food to make the occasion a memorable one.

A calypso band provided the music, at the required tempo, throughout the weekend, to add to the fun. Food was of a high standard again, which was appreciated by all.

PRESENT BOYS VS OLD BOYS - CRICKET MATCH

The Cricket match between the present and Old Boys being the most popular event, was played at the College grounds on Saturday 16th February 2013, creating the normal sporting atmosphere and great fellowship. The cricket match was won by the Old Boys and the Roots Challenge Cup awarded to the winners and players of both teams who performed well were awarded with trophies and certificates namely, the Man of the Match, Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Best Fielder.

Mr. A. Gallearachie had made arrangements for sponsorships for this match through Mr.Rienzie Fernando of M/s. Roots Ltd. & Mr. Lal Edirisinghe of Edna Group. As Old boys both being chairmen of these two organizations, yearly contributions were received from these two organizations to make this sporting event a success.

The Old Boys returned to College after the match for the usual dip in the swimming pool. A Volley ball match was played between the Old Boys vs. Support Staff and a Basket Ball match between the Present Boys vs. Old Boys.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2013

The AGM was held at the Canon.A.J.Foster Memorial hall at 7.10 p.m. on 16th February 2013. In the usual manner the Headmaster, who is the President of this association delivered the welcome note at the AGM.Please refer to the AGM minutes enclosed.

Page 10: €¦  · Web viewS. Thomas’ College. Gurutalawa. Old Boys' Association. 55th Annual General Meeting & Re – Union Celebrations. 21st, 22nd & 23rd February . 2014 Dear Members,

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS & ATTENDANCE

The following members were elected as Executive Committee members for the year 2013/1014. There were 10 meetings held in the year and the attendance sheet is attached herewith. Apart from the above meetings the Sub Committees met independently and frequently.

There were few members who were inactive for a long period of time and ceased membership from the EX-CO as per Rule 9(5). These members were sent many notices (email, SMS and even through word of mouth messages) without any success.

Therefore, all OBA members are hereby reminded and kindly requested to re-consider the capacity/caliber of new EX CO member appointments in the future. The wrong choices impede the progress of our Association and it is difficult when the full quota of the representatives are unavailable for the work envisaged and the others have to bear a bigger burden.

Annual EXCO Meeting at Gurutalawa

Annual OBA meeting was held on 05th October 2013 at Gurutalawa with the required quorum for the meeting. EXCO members visited the college on the previous day thus enabling them to observe the developments and identify areas that are needed to improve and provide potential donors abroad and locally, with detailed information of the requirements.

Other Ex-Co Meetings

Our thanks to the Secretary, S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia for the use of their Secretariat, Mr. Prabhath Jayasundara and Mr. Ranjith Gunaratne for the use of the boardroom at Engineering Consultants Ltd. and the Management of Kithu Sevana for the meetings held in Colombo and to the Headmaster and Staff, at STC Gurutalawa for their hospitality at the meetings held at Gurutalawa.

A full renovation project for the repair of the roof, floor, walls, doors, windows and ceiling of the Foster Dormitory was completed along with the repairs to the Chaplain’s Quarters and the Dormitory Master’s adjoining quarters. The full cost of this renovation project being Rs.5.6 million was donated by Mr. Mahinda Padmasiri & Mr. Milton Fernando, Old Boys of the College, at the request of Mr. Nihal Wanniarachhi. STC (G) OBA – TREASURER’S REPORT – YEAR 2013

To the General Membership:

I have the pleasure to present the Annual Audited Accounts.

As decided by the resolution approved at the last AGM in February 2013, the OBA divested itself of the Dr. R. L. Hayman, Canon Foster & Mr. Chapman Scholarship Funds and sent the proceeds in Rs. 937,110.00 at the beginning of October, to the Hayman Trust and from this year 2014, the funds for the Scholarships will be paid by the Hayman Trust direct to the Headmaster for award of these Scholarships.

The other Funds, Ronnie Weerakoon Sports Fund, OBA Australia Fund and the Chapman Family Fund were retained in the OBA, and these add up to Rs. 315,026.92.

The AGM in 2013 did not generate much profit for the OBA and only Rs. 25,006.60 was left over after expenses.

The Family get-together was held at Laya Hotel, Wadduwa in June and the event was a success in that it generated Rs. 96,372.15 as a profit to the OBA.

The Dinner Dance held in mid November was a complete success and as at present, for all ticket money was banked. Similarly most of the advertising revenue was collected and banked but with the Christmas holidays & New Year, some commercial establishments are still to make payments.

As at present the generated profit for the Dinner Dance 2013 expects to exceed Rs. 1,000,000.= and all those who did great service in the event to make it so successful, are hereby thanked.

With regard to our contribution to the schools development, the many projects that were completed by active support and involvement of the OBA members, is better described in the Secretary’s Report.

Mahendra Kalupahana

Hony. Treasurer.
