This unit of instruction focuses on the topic of “Comparing and Contrasting”

created for second grade students. Using the story “City Mouse-Country Mouse”,

students will learn how to compare and contrast settings, characters, and different

versions of the story. To complete this unit, it will take one week and a half; one

lesson per day. This unit teaches students about comparing and contrasting through

reading, writing, graphic organizers, and completing rough and final drafts. Students

are able to use their creativity throughout the unit. The lessons throughout the unit

involve individual and cooperative learning as each lesson allows student to engage

in hands on activities.

Topic: Compare and Contrast

Grade Level: 2nd

Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.9 Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series)

Objectives: 1. Students will be able to explain the difference between comparing and

contrasting.2. Students will be able to identify the similarities and differences of the

characters in the story “City Mouse-Country Mouse”. 3. Students will be able to create a venn diagram.

Materials: “City Mouse-Country House and Two More Tales from Aesop” Anchor Charts Venn Diagram Handout Construction Paper Markers/Crayons

Anticipatory Set: As an opening activity, the teacher will split the class in half. The teacher will

ask one half of the students to imagine themselves on the beach, and the other half will imagine themselves by the pool. Students will be asked to describe what they see in their imagination. After one minute of imagining, the groups will use an anchor chart and write down what they see at the pool or beach. The teacher will then underline the ideas that both sides have in common such as water, toys, or snack bar, and circle the ideas that are different such as sand, indoor pool, shells, etc. The teacher will then tell the students they have just compared and contrasted the beach to the pool.

Procedures: 1. After opening activity has been completed, the teacher will explain compare

and contrast to students. When you compare something, you are telling how they are alike or similar. When you contrast something, you are telling how they are different.

2. The teacher will say different topics out loud such as washing dishes and washing clothes, and students will raise their hand and briefly compare and contrast the two topics. Ex: Compare- Both use soap Contrast- To wash dishes you use a sponge, to wash clothes you use a machine.

3. The teacher will introduce and explain what a venn diagram is. A venn diagram is a graphic organizer used to compare and contrast two things.

Page 4: missmagbanuaclass.weebly.com€¦ · Web viewProvisions for Special Needs and Multiple Intelligences: Accommodations will be provided according to IEP’s, 504 Plans, and identified

4. Once students are comfortable with comparing and contrasting, the teacher will hand out the story “City Mouse-Country Mouse”, and the students will read along with the teacher.

5. Students will participate in describing the similarities and differences of the characters throughout the story. The teacher will record the answers on an anchor chart.

6. Students are instructed to create a venn diagram using the information on the anchor chart.

7. After the venn diagram is completed, students are asked to decorate their venn diagrams with drawings in accordance to the story.

Assessment: Formative: During class assignment, the teacher will walk around the

classroom to observe the student’s work. Summative: teacher will assets the student’s project using this checklist:

Provisions for Special Needs and Multiple Intelligences:1. Accommodations will be provided according to IEP’s, 504 Plans, and

identified Multiple Intelligences. 2. Sarah has dyslexia and has trouble reading and writing; the classroom

teacher aid will assist Sarah during group work.
