Scholarship Criteria Catalog
BAF Scholarship Application Deadline: April 1, 2016
This is an alphabetical list of scholarships available through funds established at the Beckley Area Foundation (BAF). This information is also available at www.bafwv.org.
1) Streamline your search using the worksheet (page 3-9) determine potential scholarships for you— select by county residence, high school, college you are entering, field of study, etc.
2) CAREFULLY READ each description determining if you meet eligibility criteria. If you do not meet the criteria listed, do not apply for that particular scholarship. Included in each description is information about:
a) where to apply; b) which application form to use; and
c) where to obtain the appropriate form.
3) Use the correct application form ! Submit to the correct organization.
a) If using the Beckley Area Foundation you will need to submit one application for each
scholarship you are seeking.
b) Beckley Area Foundation’s fillable application is available for download. It cannot
be submitted electronically.
c) Make sure to save on your computer prior to completing.
d) Attach all required documents and information. Incomplete or improperly submitted
application packets will not be considered.
e) All information received from applicants will be treated as confidential
4) Timeline
a) BAF application packet must be delivered or postmarked by April 1st.
b) A few scholarships have a different application form and deadline noted in their description. READ CAREFULLY for these details.
c) If recommended to receive an award, applicants will be notified during their school awards ceremony or by email.
d) Selected applicants must confirm their information and school they are entering by contacting BAF 304-253-3806 or email [email protected].
e) Scholarship award payments are made directly to the college beginning in early August.

Appalachian Scholarship Eligibility: High school graduate from Appalachian coal fields enrolling in an engineering program at a technical college or university such as Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, MIT, Cal Tech, Colorado School of Mines, or the engineering schools of Virginia Tech and Texas A&M.
Applicants planning to attend engineering schools not listed must contact the BAF office (304-253-3806) to determine if it is a donor approved program.

Barger Scholarship Eligibility
Merit based award for a matriculating senior at Webster Counting High School, Webster County, WV enrolling at a technical, community or baccalaureate institutions;
Must show intent to major in a STEM discipline (science, technology, engineering, math);
Must demonstrate fulfillment in a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts or math). This is to be accomplished through the submission of a visual or performing art project in a format of their choice (such as\s, video, portfolio, poem, music cd, ect.), that either utilizes STEM concepts or incorporates STEM principles as its subject matter. A statement explaining the connection between STEM and Arts in the demonstration submitted must be included. Involvement in arts component may be acquired through school or extracurricular participation.
Documentation regarding enrollment in at least 1 advanced placement STEM course; should none be available, statement from counselor/administrator must be submitted.

Ernest V. Bowman Memorial Scholarship Fund for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State UniversityEligibility
Graduates of Raleigh, Fayette, Summers, Mercer or Wyoming counties of West Virginia attending VA Tech.
College upperclassmen (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) who meet other selection criteria may applyas well as graduating seniors.
Engineering field of study. “B” average or better. Need based. One Award

Scholarship rotates between WV Wesleyan, Glenville State, Shepherd College and Concord University.
Qualifying school for 2016-2017 is Concord University Qualified deserving female who is a Raleigh or Fayette County high school graduate
pursuing an education degree in the Fine Arts or English field. Must have full-time enrollment status, be an upperclassman, and reside on campus. One Award

Dr. Randall Broyles Scholarship Eligibility
College qualified graduates of a Raleigh County, WV high school graduate. Based on merit and need. Requires an essay component: 400-500 words discuss one the following:
o Why you have selected your particular career path and what contribution do you hope to make to society with this choice?
o Discuss jobs you have held, your hobbies and interests when not working or studying?
o Describe your club memberships and your participation in community service or volunteer efforts?
o If finances were not a factor, what would you really want to do with your life?

College qualified graduates of Victory Baptist Academy, Raleigh County, WV Merit based to outstanding athlete. Award one to male and one to female.

Byrd-Prillerman High School Memorial Scholarship Eligibility
Need-based scholarship for Raleigh County students who live in the “Main Gulf” where the towns of Fireco, Hot Coal, Helen, McAlpin, Stotesbury, Tams, Ury, Amigo, Rhodell, East Gulf, Besco, Mead, Killarney, Pickshin, Slab Fork, Whitby, Winding Gulf, Affinity and Lillybrook once flourished.
Preference will be given to descendents of individuals who were students or teachers at Byrd Prillerman School.

Oak Hill High School graduates, who are full-time students in an accredited college or university.
Applicant must have participated in at least two sports while in high school and a GPA of 3.0.
