Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

Confession with AbsolutionP O almighty God, merciful Father,C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and

iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 23:16–29Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’” For who among them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and to hear His word, or who has paid attention to His word and listened? Behold, the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has executed and accomplished the intents of His heart. In the latter days you will understand it clearly. “I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them,

Page 6:  · Web viewPlease TURN OFF all cell phones, pagers, electronic devices, apps and games when entering the sanctuary for worship so those around you may focus on the Word of God without

yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in My council, then they would have proclaimed My words to My people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds. “Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in My name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make My people forget My name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot My name for Baal? Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has My word speak My word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the LORD. Is not My word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”L This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Gradual Ps. 31:2b, 1aL Be a rock of refuge for me,C a strong fortress to save me!L In You, O LORD, do I take refuge;C let me never be put to shame.

Epistle Romans 8:12-17So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him. L This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Matthew 7:15–23P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 7th chapter.

[Jesus said:] “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.’P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene CreedC I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father

and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the ChurchL In praise and adoration, O Lord, we come before You, our hearts filled

with gratitude. C Once again Your almighty power has brought us safely through the

night.L in You, O Lord, is our trust;C You shower down on us Your kindness and mercy.L We acknowledge, O Lord, that in spite of Your mercies we have not

always walked in wisdom.C We have wasted precious time and have failed to discipline ourselves

in food and drink. L We have neglected opportunities to worship with our fellow Christians in

psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.C We have murmured and complained when we should have been

making melodies in our hearts to Your honor and glory.L We have failed to thank You for everything, including our adversities,

which strengthen our faith.C We have sinned, O Lord; forgive us for Jesus’ sake.L Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may readily embrace, and ever hold

fast to Your Son Jesus Christ. C As He has given us His flesh to eat and His blood to drink, help us to

recognize in Him the source of our life. L May He abide in us and we in Him. C May our faith in Him be reflected in our lives.L May our leaders in state and church safeguard our freedom to worship

You according to Your will.C Be with the sick and comfort the bereaved with the hope of the

resurrection.

Proper Preface (Full)P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times

and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose, there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

The Words of Our Lord LSB 197P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

ZION TO HOST EVANGELISM WORKSHOP AUGUST 24 th Zion Lutheran Church of Mascoutah, IL will host an “Every One His Witness” evangelism training workshop on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM. A lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend this workshop, but a free-will offering will be gathered to help cover the expenses of the lunch. This evangelism program is built on Martin Luther’s thoughts on vocation, and explores how every person has a network of contacts within the various vocations where God has placed each one. The program helps open participants’ eyes to see when friends, neighbors, and family members are experiencing difficulties and are particularly in need of receiving the Gospel, and then gives ideas and practice for how to share the Gospel in those situations. All are invited to join in this workshop. To register with Zion Mascoutah to participate in the workshop and meal, please call the church office of Zion Lutheran Church at 618-566-7345. Advance registrations are needed for meal planning.
