The truly effective and happy carers are those who know how to take care of themselves. They are aware of their own needs and how to address these needs in order to prevent burnout. Knowing how to do this leads to one being more compassionate and attuned to the needs of others. Taking care of others is not easy. Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, coaches, community organizers, teachers and parents know how difficult and stressful this can be. Ma. Lourdes "Honey" Arellano Carandang, PhD pioneered in Play Therapy and Family Therapy in the Philippines. She is a practicing clinical psychologist, a retired professor and former chairperson of the Psychology Department of the Ateneo de Manila University. She is also a retired professor of Psychology Department, University of the Philippines. She was also the former President of the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP), former editor of the Philippine Journal of Psychology.

As a scientist, practitioner, and researcher, she has headed numerous research and intervention projects for children and families in difficult situations, such as poverty, violence, disaster, and prostitution through the UNICEF, International Catholic Child Bureau (ICCB), International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Australia AID, and other national and international organizations.

A best-selling author, she has written over 13 books on the situation of the Filipino children and families, such as Filipino Children Under Stress, Self-Worth and the Filipino Child, Pakikipagkapwa-Damdamin, and The Path to Healing, (on Child Abuse & Family Violence), on (disaster survivors), (on Children & Families Left Behind By OFW Mothers due to the feminization of labor global migration) among others.

Dr. Carandang has been recognized as Most Outstanding Psychologist and Outstanding Alumna of the University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. For her outstanding contribution to the field of Psychology and for translating scientific principles and applying them for the upliftment of Filipino children and families, she was honored as National Social Scientist in 1995. She has recently been named Outstanding Professional of the Year of 2014 by the Professional Regulation Commission.

She is happily married to Dr. Brigido L. Carandang, President and Dean of St. Luke’s College of Medicine. They are the proud parents of three grown-up sons: Ricky, Rafa, and Chris.
