The council of the London Borough of Redbridge have created this brief and issued it to the youth of the borough, as a whole, rather than to individuals specifically. The Borough of Redbridge is a London Borough in North East London, with the council administering its headquarters at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford. Labour won the May 2014 election, and the current council leader is Councillor Jas Atwal. Local councils are responsible for tasks and service such as waste collection/ disposal, recycling, and street cleaning. Councillors are then responsible for making decisions on behalf of the community, and these decisions should be made in the best interest of the public. The council of the London Borough of Redbridge, who are the client as we’re creating something for them, has created an informal agreement, meaning that who chose to participate aren’t under contract to do so, nor are that they actually obligated to do it so you’re not held responsible if you don't. Therefore, because it’s an informal brief, we have a lot more choice and control over the project as a whole. This means that you can chose how it’s done, such as the style of it (e.g. formal interviews, reconstruction or snappy questions), the topic of it and the issues that covers (e.g. Littering, Crime, Underage alcohol use), and overall you have the final say on the project with the freedom to make your own choices as there are no contract guidelines that you have to follow. The brief also mentions a competition aspect to the project as they’ve stated that “some of the best-produced videos will be aired during the early autumn period 2017 on local Television stations in the Redbridge region”. This means that whoever chooses to participate in this projects will be competing against all of the other people doing so as well, and their projects.

Competitions can be used to motivate those involved because it typically encourages you to work harder and do better because everyone wants to get their names “out there” and onto broadcasting platforms such as television and radio, so quality is therefore likely to increase. Competition also gives choice to the client’s role as they're able to choose the best ones from a number of entries, and this means that the council are more likely to choose ones of people to prepare for life because as soon as they leave school, they need to always have a competitive mind-set as they’ll need to compete against other young people for things such as university places, work experience and apprenticeships placement and jobs.

Social action projects that are created with the intent to benefit others, and typically not for profit. The purpose of these projects are to raise awareness of what’s happening in society that most people don’t know about a social change. This is when the public change their attitudes and behaviours after watching a social action project and often act on it. This is then likely to have a positive impact on the local area and community.Another Purpose of social action projects is community cohesion, meaning that it brings the community together and units them over a common issue or problem around them. One other purpose is for the surveillance, relating to Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification theory. This is when you want to find out what's happening elsewhere in the world or a regional area, and gives people more information about a certain area or topic. While small groups of people often create these projects in their local area, a number of social action projects are also regularly created and aired on terrestrial television.

The BBC have Panorama which first aired in 1953, and this focuses more on issues and current affairs of the country or world as a whole, alternatively, BBC One also air the with titles such as inside out London and inside out West Midlands in their respective areas, and this first began in 2002. Issues in these programs tend to be more specific to your local area. Other examples include Channel 4’s dispatches which has regularly aired since 1987, as well as ITV’s Exposure which first aired in 2011. For example, BBC One’s panorama special, titles “nursing homes undercover”, first aired in November 2016 and tackled the issue, and tackled the issue of neglect and abuse in nursing homes across the UK. Through the use of undercover footage, common problems and issues were brought to the attention of the public. An example of this captured footage is that one of the nurses said, “ I'll give her some morphine that’ll shut her up, which shows that the home aren’t providing the quality care to those who need it, as they have promised.

The purpose of this documentary was to raise awareness on the matter to the appropriate regulatory bodies so that they could see the problems themselves, as well as the general public, many of whom have elderly relatives is nursing homes themselves. This would then bring the change, inappropriate action then happened as four Morleigh Group care homes (This is the group that own and run a number of care homes in the Uk) where you put into the “special measures “category by the care quality Commission. Around a month later, it was then reported that the Morleigh care group has sold all of its assets, most likely because of the impact and public outcry after the BBC Panorama special. These two articles can be view here;http://www.cqc.org.uk/content/cqc-place-four-morleigh-nursing-homes-special-measures And http;//www.staustellvoice.co.uk/news/73/article/6086/.

Another example is Channel 4 dispatches programme titled “where’s my missing mail” which first aired in February 2016. This Programme looks at the movement and delivery of parcels across the Uk and through the use of undercover footage, it showed the mistreating of the goods of people have paid for. One clip in the documentary showed a man working in the warehouse which sorted all of the goods, and he was seen throwing parcels and packages into his van, stating “ if it doesn't say fragile…” meaning that he’s permitted to throw it around. One other clip showed a delivery driver dropping someone’s parcel over their front gate as they weren’t in their home to collect the delivery. These are just two examples from the 30 minute special about how our goods are being mistreated.

The purpose of this program wasn’t only to give an insight and to raise awareness to the general public about what’s happening before their deliveries get home, but also to change attitudes. After seeing this footage of what king warehouse workers are like, it may’ve been wished by the creators that they see how bad it all looks, meaning that this attitude at work hours, a statement from yodel company responded saying“ the allegations brought to our attention by dispatches indicated some unacceptable practices. There were some specific and isolated incidents that were brought to light that we are investigating and are taking action on, we are very sorry for the occasions when we let customers down, if the is to be believed, the program has therefore been a success as it's intended purposes, to change attitudes and raise awareness, has been reached.

One other example is from a BBC Panorama program that aired in February 2016, titled “Gangs, guns, and the police”. This special focused on the recent gang and Gun violence in Salford, Manchester, the effect this has on local people, as well as how they’re trying to overcome this huge problem in their community. As this programme looks at a specific area rather than the country as a whole, its main purpose would be to strengthen community ties within the affected area. The programme provides reconstructions of gang and gun violence that has happened on the streets and on places such as pubs, just metres from the homes of innocent individuals. It also covers different schemes that centres and people are running in the area to try and overcome this. For example, Panorama explores a small engineering firm who is providing apprenticeships to young people so that they have something to do, rather than get caught up in gang violence and trouble. It also offers the scheme to individuals who have previously been caught up in crime, and want a way to start again.

As previously discussed above, the purpose of social action projects are to raise awareness, bring about local change and strengthen community ties. An example of a topic or issue that my social action project might be about littering, in line with the brief. The purpose of this would be for residents of the local area to change their ways and use bins, rather than throwing their litter on the floor, and to change their attitudes on this so that they understand why they shouldn't be doing it, and hopefully change. Another purpose of this type of social action project is to raise awareness about the effect of littering on the environment, the aesthetic of the area or borough, and what is actually happening in the area in case some people may be unaware. Raising awareness of the issue is then likely to bring about local change itself. This local action project should also be strengthened community ties because no matter what someone's group in society is (Whether it be ethnic, age, religion, etc.)People will be able to integrate and unite with a common purpose in mind- fighting against litter in the local area.

As well as creating the project, the experiences offers individuals a huge amount of opportunities, including learning, discovering and expanding the knowledge about the local area, creating an approximate 10 minutes social action project is a huge task, challenge and achievement so would therefore be greatly looked upon a CV, your employability as an individual would boost significantly as it shows potential employees of the large- scale projects and tasks that you're able to complete. Additionally, if I plan on going to a university, after secondary school, this is a huge advantage as you’re potentially a step ahead of others, because I've already planned, researched, created and edited a challenging piece. Not only creating a social action project will improve the above but, a large number of skills. Will also be gained and improved.

As an individual I'll , progress my social skills and communication skills as not only do I have to work with and communicate well with people that I'm creating a project with ,but I will also need to learn how to communicate well with strangers and members of the public. For example, as part of the research process, I will have to go out onto the streets to ask questions to random people that have never spoken to before, so must be able to communicate well in order to guarantee understanding. Personal confidence will also likely improve here as I will grow and become more assured, rather than nervous, we are meeting and speaking to new people.

Page 5: adamandradde.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewOne other purpose is for the surveillance, relating to Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification theory. This is when you want

Being able to communicate well and being confident about it is a key skill to have a huge benefit you later in life in situations such as working in office space with other colleagues, or putting together and giving presentations to others. Within the communication skill, space I will also need to learn how to be approachable, I must have appropriate body language and use the correct language so that the people actually want to speak to me, for example, if I'm slouching, looking like I'm in a mood and don't sound welcoming, The individual is less likely to speak to me, or provide much information. Additionally, you shouldn't go up to someone if there is a group of you as it could become a look quite intimidating.

Another skill that I will be again this project is organisational and time management skills which will gradually improve as your time working on the project continues. If you're not organised enough for a project of this size I’m calibre, things are likely to fall apart in later stages, such as when it comes to filming the bulk of the project. Also, time management is extremely important as there will be a final deadline for when I have to submit the video to Redbridge, and this won't be able to move. Therefore, smaller deadlines along the way for each stage of the project would be vital and important to keep them, such as the planning stage, primary research, filming, and editing. It's important to know how much time should be dedicated to each process so that everything is running smoothly

Practical skills will also be improved along the way, such as filming techniques that I haven't used before, editing styles, the use of sound and microphones, the ability to research and write scripts, as well as more personal skills such as teamwork and the ability to cooperate within the group. Before this, the only product that I have completed have been a music video (around 4 minutes long) and a theatrical horror trailer, (around 2 minutes long), So this social action project is much bigger than anything I've done before. Within this, the also features that have to be included which are new to me, such as interviews, a presenter standing in front of the camera he speaks directly to the audience, the narrations, and being much more than important based projects overall. The editing is also quite different as my previous projects have been quite fast paced, whereas this will be much slower.

Page 6: adamandradde.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewOne other purpose is for the surveillance, relating to Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification theory. This is when you want

These skills will help me in the future, should I go want to continue in media studies and media. Productions, additionally, as this is a competition you want your video to look unique and different from all of the other entries so that I can win, so this will push your creative skills as I have to try and think outside the box to find a new crew to share our message to the audience. No matter how good or bad your project is or how will you run it, everyone is likely do you have to overcome some obstacles and problems during this project, so this will improve your problem-solving skills, for example, it could be something such as the weather preventing us from filming outside, so will need to overcome this and think of a new way to film or a different location. Another example could be that do you want to editing, a portion of the footage is accidentally deleted or becomes corrupt so as a group, we’ll need to think of ways to beat this and not let us the defeat us, but haven't effective problem-solving skills is a vital skill to have in life because it doesn't necessarily matter if things go wrong, as he shouldn't be difficult for you to overcome them. All of the aforementioned skills relate to what was previously discussed, I'm boost your employability as an individual.
