Mrs Williams says: Good morning/afternoon. The Stations of the Cross began as a way for Jesus’ disciples to honour and remember their friend after his death. Believers wanted to walk the Way of the Sorrows, the same steps Jesus walked on the way to his death. This helped them recall, understand and appreciate the greatest of Christian stories: the dying and rising of Christ Jesus. We gather today to reflect on his suffering and his death which brought us all new life. We commence with the sign of the cross.

Reader 1: We remember and praise you, Jesus:

All of Year 6: Because your life teaches us how to live as your disciples.

Drum begins beating slowly, deliberately.

Reader 1: The First Station: Jesus is Condemned.

Drum beat continues.

Reader 1: Jesus is judged and condemned, mocked and scorned. He will be put to death. But what has he done? Those who fear him and hate him now have their way with him. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Can you think of a time when someone treated you unfairly? How did it feel to be treated this way? Is this the way Jesus might have felt when he was judged and condemned? (PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have begged Pilate to set you free. We would have yelled, ‘Let him go; he’s a good man.’

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I really have been brave enough to speak up for Jesus? What if Pilate had arrested me, too?

Reader 2: Do I have the courage to speak up for someone who is being treated unfairly?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, many times people don't seem to understand me. Sometimes too, I feel like the criticism of others is unfair. Help me accept the mistakes of others as you accept me when I make mistakes. Help me be big enough to ask forgiveness for the mistakes I make and to forgive as Jesus did. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Second Station: JESUS TAKES HIS CROSS. (PAUSE)

A drum beats slowly in background.

Reader 1: Jesus picks up his cross to carry it to Calvary, the place where he will die. The cross is made of heavy wood. How will he carry it? (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Have you ever been asked to do something which is so hard, you don’t feel you can cope? Did you turn to God for help just as Jesus did? (PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have carried that heavy cross for you. We would have told those soldiers, ‘Get back; leave him alone! Can’t you see he’s in pain?’

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have dared to talk back to a group of sword-carrying soldiers? What if one of them had pointed his sword at me?

Reader 2: What do I do when someone is wrongly blamed for something he or she didn’t do?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, my problems may seem small to those around me, but you know how hard they are for me to carry sometimes. Help me to remember those who suffer serious illness, disability and those whose problems are severe. When I'm tempted to complain, help me remember Jesus and the cross He carried for me. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Third Station: JESUS FALLS. (PAUSE)

A drum beats slowly in background.

Reader 1: The weight of the cross is too much for Jesus and he falls down. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Because we are human we sometimes fail to turn to God when we need help. What has been too much for you carry? Share it with God now.(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have made sure you didn’t fall. We would have walked beside you and given you strong arms to lean on.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have wanted to touch Jesus and get blood and dirt on my clothes? What if someone had seen me like that?

Reader 2: What do I do when my friends laugh at me for helping someone?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, I know there are many times when I give up before I should. I need to think of the cross Jesus carried, and how he got up again and kept moving. Help me to do my work as well as I can and to finish what I have started. When I fall, help me get up again and keep going. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Fourth Station: JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER. (PAUSE)

Some instrumental music is introduced here.

Reader 1: Jesus sees his mother. His mother sees him. Mary shares in her son’s pain. There is nothing she can do to help him. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Do we stand with others in their pain? Sometimes those we love, suffer. We must be there for them in their pain. Be with them now in silent prayer.(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have formed a circle around you and Mary to let you talk as long as you wanted. We would have held out against anyone who tried to push us away.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have dared to get in front of an angry crowd of people? What if I had been pushed down and hurt?

Reader 2: What do I do when someone pushes me or a friend out of line?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, you gave me my parents. Nobody can take their place. I thank you for that gift. Help me to show my love and appreciation to them. Help me to remember to pray for them often. If they have died, help me be challenged by the love they shared with me. When I feel alone, help me to realize that you are my parent, the friendly face that I can depend upon to give me the help I need. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Fifth Station: SIMON HELPS JESUS. (PAUSE)

Instrumental music continues.

Reader 1: Jesus has lost his strength. A man named Simon offers to carry the cross for Jesus. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Do you help other people to carry their burdens by stepping in to give a hand? Sometimes this takes a lot of courage, as it did for Simon.(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have taken turns at carrying the cross so that you wouldn’t have had to carry it at all. And we would have let Simon go on by.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Maybe the others would have taken turns carrying the cross, but would I? What if I had hurt myself?

Reader 2: Do I respond eagerly when my parents or teachers ask me to help with difficult chores?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, help me notice the needs of those around me. Help me do more than just stand there and watch. Help me see the needs of others as opportunities for me to reach out and help as you did. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Sixth Station: VERONICA HELPS JESUS. (PAUSE)

Instrumental music continues

Reader 1: A woman sees Jesus’ face all covered in blood and sweat. She feels deeply sorry for Jesus. She wipes his face for him. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: When do you stop to help another who is in need? Who is someone you know who needs comfort and understanding? Remember them now.(PAUSE)(Fade out the instrumental music).

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have done just what Veronica did. We would have wiped your face with soft, warm cloths, and then put bandages on your open wounds.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I really have dashed out toward Jesus with all those people around? What if someone had made fun of me?

Reader 2: What do I do when someone gets hurt on the playground or gets sick on the bus?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, help me see the needs of others as being as important as my own needs. Remind me to go out of my way to be helpful, even if I'm not asked. Help me not be concerned about what others may think of me. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Seventh Station: JESUS FALLS AGAIN. (PAUSE)

A drum begins beats slowly in background.

Reader 1: Jesus cannot bear the weight of his cross. He is so weak now. He falls down again. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Do you ever have times when you feel like this? Share it now with Jesus.(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have demanded that the cross be removed from your shoulders. We would have told the soldiers, ‘Can’t you see he’s had enough?’

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have made demands in such a dangerous situation? What if the soldiers had pushed me back?

Reader 2: What do I say or do when I know that someone else is doing something wrong?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, sometimes life is hard. Sometimes I grow impatient with myself, and even take that impatience out on others. Help me realize how much you love me, just as I am. Help me keep trying when things get hard and when I fall, just like Jesus did. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Eighth Station: JESUS CONSOLES THE WOMEN. (PAUSE)

A drum beats slowly in background.

Reader 1: Along the way, Jesus meets a group of women. Perhaps they are friends of his mother. They are crying for Jesus. They know the terrible thing that will happen to Jesus. Jesus stops and comforts the women.(PAUSE)

Reader 2: Are you a comforting person? If you were in pain yourself, would you be able to comfort others?(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have told the women, ‘Don’t you understand? It is sin, our sins and your sins, that Jesus wants us to cry over and be sorry about.’

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have understood Jesus any better than the women of Jerusalem? Would I even have tried?

Reader 2: Am I sorry for the pain I cause others through the selfish things I sometimes do?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, many times I am selfish. I expect others to serve me while doing very little for them. Help me notice and respond to the needs others have, even when I have problems of my own. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Reader 1: The Ninth Station: JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME. (PAUSE)

A drum beats slowly in background.

Reader 1: Jesus is completely exhausted. His whole body is hurting. He stumbles and falls. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: When you are low and in need, how do you keep going? How does God help you in those times? (PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, you would not have fallen again. We would have held you up and supported you in every way we could. We would have picked up the cross ourselves.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have helped carry the cross with the others? What if it had fallen on me and hurt me?

Reader 2: What do I do when someone old or sick could use my help?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, many times I feel like giving up. Sometimes I grow impatient with myself, especially when I make the same mistakes over and over again. Help me use this awareness to become more compassionate toward others. Help me get up and keep going, as Jesus did. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Silent prayer 30 seconds. Drum beat to indicate movement to next station.

Drum begins to beat

Reader 1: Most of Jesus’ clothes are taken from him now. He looks the poorest of the poor. Jesus has nothing left. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: Do we consider those who have nothing? Are we always wanting ‘more’?(PAUSE)

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, those soldiers wouldn’t have laid a hand on you. We would never have allowed them to touch your clothing or humiliate you in any way.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I have followed Jesus that far, much less demanded that the soldiers back off?

Reader 2: What do I do when someone is being made fun of at school?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, help me be aware of the prejudices I have against others. Help me value those around me, rather than degrading them by telling unclean stories. Help me strive to be pure in my thoughts, words and deeds. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Reader 1: The Thirteenth Station: JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS. (PAUSE)

Silence 30 seconds

Reader 1: Jesus is dead. His friends take his body down from the cross to prepare for his burial. (PAUSE)

Reader 2: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have done just what Joseph did. We would have taken your body down from the cross with dignity and with love. And we would have comforted Mary and stayed with her.

Reader 1: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 2: Would I, like Joseph, have admitted being a follower of Jesus? What if Pilate had arrested me?

Reader 1: What do I do to show that I am a Christian? Do I ever try to hide my faith from others?

Reader 1: The Fourteenth Station: JESUS IS BURIED. (PAUSE)

Silence for 30 seconds

Reader 1: Jesus’ body lies in the tomb. We are sad. We wait and we hope in our sadness, for the signs of God’s love that will bring new life.(PAUSE)

Reader 2: Jesus, your body is prepared for burial. Joseph gave you his own tomb. He laid your body there and rolled a large stone in front of it, then went home. What a sad day it has been for so many people.

Reader 1: As a child, sometimes I try to keep everything for myself. I find it hard to share my things with my brothers or sisters and with my friends. I can accumulate things and keep them for myself. I try to make sure I have what I want before I share what I have with anybody else.

Reader 2: Help me think of Joseph of Arimathea, who risked his own life as he accepted Jesus' body for burial. Help me think of how Joseph loved Jesus so much that he gave him his own tomb.

Reader 1: If we had been there, Jesus, we would have helped carry your body to the grave and we would have put our own pillows and blankets beneath it.

Reader 2: But we weren’t there. We are only here now, remembering.

Reader 1: Would I really have given up my own pillow or my blankets, even for Jesus? What if I had been unable to get any others?

Reader 2: Do I give up any of my comforts to help those in need?

Reader 1: Bow your heads and let us pray: God, I never know how many more days I will live. Help me make this a better day for those around me. Help me say kind things to the ones I love while they are with me, and while I am with them. It can make my life fuller and their lives happier when I do. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

All of Year 6: Jesus, teach me how to follow you.

Closing PrayerYear 6 teacher: God of love, you gave us Jesus who lived here on this earth. He suffered and he died on the cross. We know you are there for those who suffer, for those who are hurt, who are sad or are alone – just as you were with Jesus. We pray that you be with each of us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of Jesus who is your gift of love and our Easter hope.

All: Amen
