Each week students will be expected to read a take home book (this text can be chosen from a variety of books at school including their school library book or it may be from the student’s personal collection or local library). Students must also practise their times tables, learn spelling words and in addition complete a task as directed by the teacher. The tasks can vary from week to week and can include hands on experiences such as completing worksheets or investigating inquiry topics and creating projects. If you have any questions about homework, speak to your child’s classroom teacher.

*Three Manga High activities will be set for students each week, or as notified. Students can do 1, 2 or all 3.

*Homework will be written in your child’s diary and available on the school website. Students can request a hard copy from their teacher. *Please ensure that the diary returns to school daily and that it is checked regularly. Students should record the names of the books they are reading and what pages were read each night, or week, and get parents to sign off on this.

MATHS In Term 2, students will continue their study of Addition including fractions, decimals and worded problems, and extend this understanding into Subtraction. reasoning. Later in the term we will move into Multiplication and Division, and students will need to be fluent in their number facts and mental computation to work efficiently. In Applied, students will work on data handling, reading and interpretation from various sources as well as collecting and presenting their own data. In Measurement students will look at Volume and Capacity. All students in Grade 5/6 have their own log in to Manga High and can access tasks at home to practise skills and work towards gaining points in tasks. You can support your child by testing their automatic recall of number facts in addition and subtraction, such as 10-6, 19-7, 15-3 ect. You can also quiz their multiplication facts by simply drilling them with tables facts.

VALUESOur overarching value for Term 2 is RESPECT. Our investigation will begin with self -respect. What is it and how does it impact our daily lives? Through self- awareness we can better recognise our strengths and face the challenges that life and learning present. We will shift our focus to respect for peers and adults and how our daily interactions can impact others. Finally, we will look at respect for possessions and our environment. Through a variety of school and home learning activities, students will explore the value of respect and how it can have a huge impact on their lives and the people they interact with. Students will be encouraged to express their

thoughts, insights and opinions, in Circle Time. They will participate in a variety of activities that encourage their understanding of respect and how to live a full life, respecting themselves and others.

INQUIRYIn Term Two students will be studying Forensic Science, specifically how forensic science provides impartial scientific evidence for use in a court. Beginning with an incursion, ‘A Case of Discovery,’ students will participate in an interactive workshop, designed to encourage a love of science and show how science plays an important role in the real world beyond the classroom. Students will examine the crime scene and analyse the evidence including impressions, fingerprints, DNA, animal tracks, scatology and uncover hidden clues. In the following weeks, the 5/6 cohort will participate in rotations with different teachers to experience a variety of forensic science skills, including; how DNA is it used to solve cases, shoe impression analysis, finger printing, analysing writing types and chromatography. The unit will culminate in students using their newly acquired forensic skills to solve a crime.
