LOTFReading Response Questions

Write three responses over the course of reading Lord of the Flies. Make sure you try to pick a variety of topics that each interests you. That way, you are ready to write your argumentative paper later in the year.

Due Dates:See Schedule

1. Character analysis – chose a character and explore his behavior, decisions, role on the island, and role in the novel. Make sure you point out examples from the text and create and answer “so what” questions.

2. Character symbolism – Lord of the Flies has been interpreted as an allegory for different types of government. Each character symbolizes a certain type of government. Look at a specific character’s character traits and discuss what he symbolizes and how.

3. Themes – write about a theme that arises in the text. It can be one we’ve discussed in class or one you see emerging on your own. Identify the theme and then explain its significance.

4. Reality – does it matter that the premise of the novel is that all boys are stranded? Would the same have happened if the plane were full of girls? Adults? A mixed group of people? The trick here is too avoid making too many stereotypical assumptions. Focus on what the boys do that is gender/class/age specific. Do not use example that are not in the text.

5. Setting – what is the role of the setting (island, temperature, time period)? How does it affect the characters? Your reading?

6. Religious Imagery – look closely at the imagery of the setting and actions of the characters. Are there any religious undertones? What allusions do you see to Christianity?

7. Symbols and Motifs – what, when, where – most important is why? What is the effect?

8. Leadership – chose a character who is a contender for “the” leadership position. Are they justified in their actions? Do they hurt or harm the rest of the boys? What qualities do they possess that makes a good or bad leader?

9. Any other ideas you have…

Guidelines: MLA format, 250ish words, No Dirty Dozens, No dead words, submit to turnitin.com **Title should be a thesis statement**1st response is an 8 sentence paragraph. 2nd and 3rd response should resemble 8-sentence paragraph, but it only limited by word count.

Chapter 9- “A View to a Death”

Who’s at fault?

Create arguments from the point of view of Ralph, Jack, and Piggy. In the opinion of the character, was Simon’s death an accident? Outright murder? Was it anyone’s fault? Each argument must include citations from the text as part of the explanation. Use the space below. Be creative and show your insight!

Here’s an example:As Percival, I believe that we was not responsible in the killing of Simon. All of us littl’uns was terrible scared of the beast, and we believed that it could have been a ghost, or a giant squid, or maybe even a giant snake (91). So when poor Simon came out of the woods he surprised us, and we were all scared anyways. We didn’t mean to kill him, but we just didn’t know it was Simon. As Piggy said, “life’s scientific,” and we didn’t know enough. It was all just a terrible accident, really. Anybody could havedone it…
