English

For the past 2 week we have been focusing on the text ‘The Hodgeheg’ by Dick King –Smith. We are still going to focus on this, so make sure you have your copy handy – if not, check the blog as there is an electronic copy on there.

We ended the week by looking at direct speech. Let’s revise the rules for when we need to use speech marks.

Today, we are going to look at synonyms. A synonym is a word that has the same (or nearly the same) meaning as another word in the same language.

Task:

Use a thesaurus (online if you don’t have a paper copy) and find as many different/ interesting words for ‘said’.

Topic

From 29th June – 19th July 2020 it is ‘National Art week’. Whilst many art galleries and museums may be shut, I thought it would still be nice to get engaged with some art work at home.

This week, we are focusing on ‘The Natural World.’

Our artist of focus this week is, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906).

Paul Cézanne was a French artist and a prominent figure in the Post-Impressionist movement. His bold and gorgeous colors seem to leap off the canvas.

Among his many works inspired by nature are such paintings as “Jas de Bouffan,” a study of trees that he completed in 1887 and which now hangs in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and “Road Before the Mountains, Sainte-Victoire,” which the artist finished in 1902 and which now appears in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Task:

Look at this piece by Cézanne – discuss with an adult:

What can you see?

Do you like it? Dislike it? Explain your answer.

Why do you think Cézanne decided to use fruit in this piece?

Task:

Using coloured pencils/ paints/ crayons, have a go at recreating this piece yourself. Pay close attention to the colours used for the fruits and how the fruit is placed across the piece of artwork.
