Main point: God’s plan to make Jesus King can’t be stopped.Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20 (NIV)

Intro games: If you have a space to play in try to play an active game to get some energy out before the lesson starts. (Choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Who’s got the Baby? (Space needed)

Link to lesson: In today’s true Bible story we see a king in search of a baby, a baby God promised would come. This King fears the baby and wants to kill him. Let’s see what the Bible has to say.

Icebreaker: Have you ever planned something and the plan didn’t work? (take

responses)

Put up 6 pictures of the story (enlarge below or make your own set). Ask the children to put them in the correct sequence. Read what each picture is

describing from the Bible. (could stick the verses on the back of the pictures and read as you put up)

Questions: Who were the wise men looking for? (v1-2 A child King, Jesus) How did they know Where to find the child King? (v1-2 a star led the

way) What did the wise men do when they found King Jesus? (v10-11 they

treated him as King, showed their love for him by giving presents)

In verse 6 we are reminded that long ago God promised that his King would come from Bethlehem.

Herod wanted to get rid of God’s King. What did God do to stop Herod’s plan? (v12,13 he warned the wise men in a dream, they went home a different way, he told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus and run to Egypt).

Just think for a moment of this plan of God’s. How easy would it be to stop it? (Just kill the baby! And boy did Herod try! He sent lots of soldiers to make sure the baby died.)

But God knew and his plan cannot be stopped.

How does it make you feel to know that whatever God plans, happens?

God’s plan is to save people. Do you know what this plan is? (to allow Jesus to grow up and at the right time die for the sins of the world).

Jesus is God’s amazing King and nothing will stop him from being King.

Crown summary:put up a large crown and write “unstoppable” on it. Each week ask the group to predict the word that best describes Jesus, God’s King. Write the words in the correct spaces on the crown.

Pray thank God for his plan to save us that could not and cannot be stopped. Pray we would treat Jesus like the wise men did – as King of our lives.

Variation on the game: If You Love Me Honey Smile.Need: circle of chairs , enough for all but one child

Children sit in the chairs, one child stands in the middle. None of the children seated are allowed to smile. If they do, they lose their seats and become the child in the middle. The child in the middle has to try and make a child smile by walking up to them and saying, Put a smile on your dial! Continue until all children have had a go in the middle or until it’s time to move to another game.

Link: - We can put a smile on each other’s face by being funny. And we can put a smile on our Mum’s and Dad’s faces when we do the right thing or when we try really hard. But there’s been only one person who has put a smile onGod’s face. There is only one person who has made God happy. We know this because God told the whole world when this person was baptised.Does anyone know who put a smile on God’s face? (his Son, Jesus)

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

Intro question: Who is the most important person you’ve ever met?

Read Matthew 3;1-2 and 4-6 What did John the Baptist tell the people to do? (v2 to change their hearts / live a

different way) Why did John say they had to do this? (v2 God’s kingdom was coming. Note:

God’s kingdom is about God ruling this world, God’s King would come and rule). What does the word repent mean (refer to game if played earlier)? (Repent means to

turn and go the opposite way. In this case it means to turn away from sin / our own way, to say sorry and to go God’s way)

Read Matthew 3:13-17Either do ‘gap word’ activity together (write it out big), or make two teams, get two children up, one from each team and have two copies of the ‘gap word’ and get them to see who can fill in the fastest.

When Jesus was baptized three amazing things happened that have not happened at anyone else’s baptism. What were they? (v16-17 Heaven opened, God’s Spirit came down on Jesus, God spoke)

What do they tell us about Jesus? (Jesus is special / loved by God, he is God’s Son, he has not done anything wrong)

There are people who think that Jesus is a good man, a great teacher and someone who lived long ago. What would you say to them?

Do you believe that Jesus is God’s Son?

Crown summary, todays word: pleasing

Conclude:Jesus is God’s one and only Son. He did not have to die for any of his own sins because he has none! Jesus is also fully human and is the only one who can step in and pay for our sins, he is the only one who can save us. This is an amazing plan!

Pray:Thank God that he sent his only Son to earth for us.

Lesson 3 Matthew 4:1-11 – God’s Perfect KingMain point: Jesus was tempted but did not sin.

Memory verse: Hebrews 4:15

Intro game: Trust Or DistrustWarning: check for allergies before doing this activity.Need:- bag of sweets- small gifts appropriate for age of children (or expensive wrapped chocolates, e.g. Lindt)

Begin by saying the following: We're going to do something to help us think about trusting God’s words. This side of the room is the good side to be on (indicate the right side of the room). You can trust what I say. You can now choose which side of the room to be on. Move now 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Ok. So you've chosen. This side (the left side) can have these (throw some sweets to children who chose that side). Repeat game and remind children…This side of the room is the good side to be on (indicate the right side of the room). You can trust what I say. You can now choose which side of the room to be on. Move now 5, 4, 3, 2, 1….Again give children on the left side sweets.

Repeat game a few more times. After they have chosen for the last time (note: don't say it's the last time) say the following to those who trusted your words and stayed on the right side… Everyone stay where you are. It was true this is the good side to be on. And everyone who trusted what I said will receive one of these (hand out gifts/chocolates).

Link:- In Matthew 4, Jesus had a choice. To trust what his Father in Heaven said or do what Satan said.- What Satan said was very tempting, it looked very good. (food, power and fame). These things are great but don’t last long. - Instead Jesus said ‘No’ and chose to trust his Father because he knew that God’s words can always be trusted. The Marshmallow Test (if you have access to a projector / computer)- Download the short film from U-Tube titled, The Marshmallow Test. The children were told not to eat. If they obeyed, they were rewarded with double the amount of marshmallows. But it was a hard choice. The marshmallows looked so good. It’s hard to choose to say ‘No’. Temptation means thinking about doing something God hates. (But sin is different. Sin is doing something that God hates). We will get lots of temptations to do things God hates. But God wants us to learn to say ‘No.’, he saved us from sin. So learn to now say ‘No’ to sin.

Story: Matthew 4:1-11Tell story using a good children’s Bible.Use the script below and do a rap with the children. You could include visuals for each part of the rap. E.g. rock, temple, crown

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

Discuss:When was the last time you can remember being tempted to disobey your Mum or your Dad?

Questions: What does temptation mean? (thinking about doing something God hates) What does sin mean? (doing something that God hates) What were the three things Satan tempted Jesus to do? (turn rocks into bread –

Jesus was hungry, 40 days without food! Jump off a tall building so that God would save him. Have the whole world say that Satan is the best.)

What did Jesus say to Satan each time he was tempted to disobey God? (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10) (It is written in the scripture… Quotes God’s words from the Bible to Satan – Don’t live by bread but by word of God, quoted Deuteronomy 8:3. Don’t test God, quoted Deuteronomy 6:16. Worship only God, quoted Deuteronomy 6:13).

Jesus knew God’s Word and used it against Satan. Satan put choices in front of Jesus and tempted him. But Jesus never sinned. How is Jesus like you? (human, tempted)

How is Jesus not like you? (is God, said no to temptation every time, never sinned)

Why is it so important that Jesus is like us? (i.e. human who is tempted)? (he is the only one who can save us; God has to punish sin; a person can’t take the punishment for someone else’s sin if they have to be punished for their own sin; only Jesus can take our punishment because he has no sin to be punished for.)

Jesus knew the Bible and used the Bible to say ‘No’ to Satan. How well do you know God’s word the Bible? Do you own a Bible?

Crown summary: word for the day: Perfect

Pray:And thank God that Jesus never gave in to temptation and is perfect and can take our sin. Ask the children if they would like to say sorry for something they have done wrong that they know God hates.

Lesson 4 Matthew 8:5-13 - What Impresses God’s King

Main point: Faith is believing and trusting what King Jesus says.Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20

Intro Game (choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Centurion’s coming (need space)Variation for the game, Captains’ Comin’.Teach the children the following actions to the following commands.

Centurion’s comin’ - stand at attention Turn - do a complete turn March - march on the spot Drop - drop to the ground

All children are to do the correct action when the Leader calls out a command. If they do the wrong action, hesitate or are the last one to make that action, they are thrown out of the centurion’s army (sit to the side).

Leader can call out one action or a string of actions. The aim is to be the last child in.

Link:Today we meet a very impressive man. He is a centurion. Do you know what a centurion is? (a general in an army who is in charge of 100 men). Jesus is genuinely impressed with this man (and its not because he’s a centurion in the Roman army!) Let’s see what today’s true Bible story teaches us.

The Unison Game (can be done in smaller space as no running involved)Leader stands on a small stable box or chair so they can be seen. (optional: leader wears a centurion’s helmet – Explain what a centurion is – a leader in the Roman army in charge of 100 men)

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

Leader is a centurion pretending to train his soldiers for battle. Children are the soldiers who have to learn to duck and move so as to avoid being killed in battle. Children have to move as a group according to the leader's hand directions. If they move the wrong way or are last to make that movement they are out of the army (i.e. sit out). Continue until one child remains.

Leader's Movement: push one hand forward = children hold stomachs slice one hand down right side = children bend to left slice one hand down left side = children bend to right slice one hand down middle of the group = children bend

right or left depending on which side they are on slice one hand across top = children duck slice one hand low to ground = children jump

Link:A centurion has enormous power. If he told his soldiers to go there, then they would go there. If he told them to come, then they’d come. People did exactly what he told them to do, when he told them to do it. The centurion who came to see Jesus knew that Jesus had even greater power than he did. Let’s see what today’s true Bible story has to teach us.

Discuss: Why is it hard to trust people? (take responses) What do you think the centurion would’ve thought about Jesus? (take

responses) What was wrong with the Centurion’s servant? (v6 couldn’t move, was

in pain) Jesus said he’d come and make the servant better, but the Centurion

told him not to come. What did the Centurion ask Jesus to do? (v8 just say that the servant would be better)

The Centurion and Jesus have something in common. How are they alike? (v9 when they speak things happen, they are men who have authority)

How did Jesus react to what the Centurion said? (v10 Jesus was amazed, told everyone that the Centurion had great faith)

Was the centurion right to put his faith in Jesus? Why? (Yes, the servant was made better exactly when Jesus said)

25

- The Centurion knew that when Jesus said something, it happened.- He knew if Jesus said his servant was better, his servant was better!- The Centurion believed Jesus and trusted him. He had faith in Jesus.- Jesus wants us to have faith in him. Jesus said, ‘Trust me, God sent me

to save you.’ He also said, ‘Believe in me and you will be saved.’

Application: How do you know if you have faith in Jesus? (believe what Jesus says,

trust that he died to save you, trust that your sins are forgiven, live a life with Jesus as the boss!)

Is there something Jesus said that you find hard to believe? (i.e. words of assurance: all sins, past, present and future, are forgiven, our place in heaven is secure, etc.)

Summary crown: today’s word: Powerful!

Pray:Thank God that they can trust Jesus and put their faith in him. Pray that those who haven’t done so would come to believe and have faith in Jesus too.

Bible story with role play (appropriate for 5-9 years old) Matthew 8:5-13

Get the children into pairs, and tell them that the story today is about two people who lived in the time of Jesus. (Challenge them to find the relevant picture on the Bible Timeline.) One of the pair will be a Roman soldier and the other the soldier’s servant. (If you have an odd number of children, let two soldiers share a servant.)

Move to one end of the room, letting each pair have a small space as the Roman soldier’s home. Spend a short time with the children playing out their parts as master and servant. The soldier should give some orders, such as ‘go and sweep up’ or ‘bring my meal to me’, and the servant should obey. Then tell the children that the servant fell ill. He could not move and was suffering terribly, so he was put to bed. The soldier was very sad. Let the servant lie down with the soldier sitting beside him.

Ask the children to think what the soldier might have done. Perhaps they gave the servant medicine or called the doctor, but this didn’t help. Ask them whether they can think of anyone else who could help. If anyone suggests asking Jesus for help, say that the Jews did not like the Roman soldiers. Jesus was a Jew, so would he listen to the soldier? Would he help a Roman? The soldier decided he would go to Jesus and ask for help.

Say that the soldier left his servant at home and went into the town of 26

Capernaum to find Jesus. Ask the children ‘soldiers’ to move to the other end of the room and sit down, leaving the servant lying down ‘at home’.Ask the children what they think will happen when Jesus and the soldier meet. Explain that you are going to read the story from the Bible to find out. Read Matthew 8:5–10,13 from a child-friendly Bible such as the Good News Bible or Contemporary English Version.

As the soldier remains seated in ‘Capernaum’, ask the servant to ‘be well again’. He hasn’t been touched by Jesus, he hasn’t even seen him, but Jesus’ power has made him well!  Let the soldier travel back to his home and greet his servant who is now well.

Suggest that the children think quietly about the amazing way Jesus healed the man without seeing him. This story also reminds us about trusting Jesus and believing that he has great power. What would the children like to say to God, perhaps about this story or his power? Give them time to respond to God in their own way.

If time at the end (or substitute for intro): Faith WalkSet up an ‘obstacle’ course (can use children’s shoes etc), blindfolds (or get children to promise to close their eyes

Children get into pairs. One child in the pair is ‘blind’, the other child is their guide. They must guide their partner from one side of the room to the other safely around obstacles.

Link: Faith is believing what someone says, even though you may not be able to see it with your own eyes. Faith is trusting them, doing what they tell you, even though you can’t see it with your own eyes. If you put your faith in someone, you believe and trust them. The centurion had faith in Jesus.

Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20Intro game: (choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Walking on the water: (open space needed)Need: newspaper

Spread sections of newspaper across the room. Instruct children to walk around the room as a leader calls out walk, walk, walk…When leader calls out sink, children race to stand on a piece of newspaper. Any child unable to make it onto the newspaper sits out. Each time the leader reduces the amount of newspaper on the ground, until there is only enough for one child to stand on it. That child is the winner.

Who Has The Power To Save? (need large open space)Divide children into friendship or year groups and ask each group to create a mime or a situation that needs a rescuer (see examples below).Examples:- trapped in a burning building- caught in a rip- hit by a car- being robbed

The Bible says that we are all in need of a rescuer. We need to be rescued from the punishment our sins deserve. And there is only one person who can rescue us.Jesus! Because of Jesus we have nothing to fear! Lets see what the Bible has to say today…

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

Discuss: Have you ever been caught in a rip or afraid you might drown? (take responses) How did the disciples feel when they saw Jesus walking on the water? Why?

(v26 terrified, they were unsure who it was at first, they thought it was a ghost) Why did Peter think he could walk on the water too? (v28 because if it was

Jesus, he had the power to make him do it too) What happened when Peter saw the crashing waves? (v30 he was afraid and

started to sink) Who did he cry out to save him? Why? (v30 Jesus, Jesus is the only one with the

power to save him) What was Peter’s problem? (v31 he had little faith, he doubted Jesus)

Application:As a class, organize the following ‘promises’ into two groups – things they are sure about and unsure about. (print out and put up on board as you read them – you could read each statement and ask the children to think in their heads if they are sure or unsure about it…*)

I believe in Jesus so I am sure God has forgiven all the bad things I have done. I believe in Jesus so I am sure God has forgiven all the bad things I will do. I trust in Jesus and I am sure that I am saved from the punishment my sins

deserve. I am following Jesus so I know that Jesus is preparing a place for me in heaven. Because of Jesus, God loves me. Because of Jesus, God hears and answers my prayers. When Jesus comes back he will take me to be with him in heaven. God knows what I need and cares for me.

*This activity will help identify children in the group who are unsure if they are Christians and also any area of doubt for the Christian children in the group.

- God keeps every promise he makes. - God has promised that if you believe in Jesus he will save you, he has promised

that if you trust Jesus your sins are forgiven and you have a home in heaven. - We can be absolutely sure that God keeps every promise he makes.

Crown summary: today’s word: Trustworthy!

PrayThank God for his trustworthiness. Pray that children who are unsure would gain confidence in the truth of Jesus and what he has done for them.

Lesson 6 Matthew 17:1-13 – Listen to God’s King

Main point: We must listen to King Jesus because that’s how we please God the Father.

Memory verse: Hebrews 4:15

Intro game: (choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Mountain, hill, valley (need some space OR play ‘do this, do that’ and make the children stay in a confined space – link would be the same as for, ‘mountain, hill, valley’)

Need: line marked on the ground (or a crack in the cement / tiles etc)

Ask the children to stand in one line all facing the person in front. Leader stands facing the line. If the leader calls out Mountain, all children jump to the right. If the leader calls out Hill, all children jump to the left. If the leader calls out Valley all children jump back to where they began. Leader calls out words in random order. If a child jumps the wrong way, he/she is out. The last child to follow the instruction is also out. Last child in wins.

Link:Today, we’re going to be talking about the importance oflistening. The only way you could win that game was to listen carefully.Listening is more than hearing. It’s hearing and doing. Let’s see who had to listen and what they had to do in out true Bible story today.

Story: Matthew 17:1-13Use the script below to retell the story with visuals (visuals in separate file, or use from an illustrated Children’s Bible)

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

Discussion: When are your parents most likely to be happy with you? When are they most likely to be upset with you? Jesus’ Dad is God the Father. What does God the Father say about his Son in

Matthew 17:5 – read for the children. (Jesus is his Son, he loves him, God is pleased with him)

How does someone make God happy? (they obey him perfectly, they never do anything wrong ever)

Can you remember another time in Jesus’ life when God said something like this about Jesus? (Matthew 3:17, at Jesus’ baptism)

Why do you think Jesus became like bright light? (V2 Jesus is God, because God is light, Jesus is clean from sin, there is no dark sin in him)

Who joined Jesus on the mountain? (v3 Moses and Elijah) Why is this strange? (Elijah and Moses had died a long time ago) What does this make you think about Jesus? (v11-13 Moses was the great

rescuer of God’s people the Israelites and Elijah was the great prophet, who spoke God’s words to the people, Jesus is God’s great rescuer and he speaks God’s words)

Application: Who do we make God happy? (listen to his Son, Jesus) How do we listen to Jesus? (read the Bible or listen to adults read the Bible to us,

come to Super Human and hear about what Jesus says.) What are some things Jesus tells us to do? (believe in him, trust him, repent,

keep saying sorry, don’t just love your friends but also love those you don’t get along with, don’t pay back when someone hurts you…)

Are you listening to Jesus? Are you doing these things?

PrayAsk God to help us remember that Jesus is the only one who can make us right with him. Ask God to help us listen to Jesus and to do what he says.

Lesson 7 Matthew 18:10-14 – Don’t walk away from God’s

KingMain point: God doesn’t want anyone to turn away from King

Jesus. We need to help each other to keep on loving Jesus.Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20

Intro game: (choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Protect those lambs! (need some space)Need: two soft toy lambs, a pool noodle cut in half (one per shepherd), soft balls, approximately 6 to 8 balls, two hoops, shepherd outfit (optional)

Divide children into two even teams. Select one child from each team to be the shepherd (can dress up) and hand them half a pool noodle. Place each lamb on the floor inside a hoop at opposite ends of the hall. Shepherd has to guard the sheep from the opposing team without stepping into the hoop. The rest of each team (those not selected to be shepherd) stand in a line either side of their shepherd and throw a soft ball at the opposing team's sheep. Only the shepherd can stand in the way of the incoming ball and deflect the ball away from the sheep. However, the shepherd does not throw the ball at the opposing teams' sheep, they simply pass the ball (if they catch it) to a fellow team member who throws the ball. The opposing team tries to throw the soft ball and hit the sheep. Both teams can be throwing the ball at the same time.

Link:In our game, the job of the shepherd is to protect the sheep. In today’s true Bible story Jesus tells us about a shepherd who loved and protected his sheep.

Whose got the sheep? (Variation of the game: Queenie – need large space)Need: soft toy sheep (can be a soft ball that you pretend is a sheep) large open space

Children scatter all over the open space. One child is selected to be in. He/she stands with back to the group and tosses sheep over head. One child catches ball and places it behind back. All other children try and protect that child by placing their hands behind their

backs. The group then shouts out, ‘Shepherd, shepherd, who's got the sheep?' Child who's in has to turn and guess who has the sheep. If correct, he/she gets another turn. If incorrect, the child who caught the sheep is in.

Link:In today’s true Bible story Jesus tells of a shepherd and a sheep who’d wandered away from him. Jesus’ story has a hidden meaning – can you see what he is teaching you?

Story: Matthew 18:10-14 Tell story using script and visuals provided. (visuals in separate file) You could do a dramatic telling of the story with actions required by the children

and various stages or sound effects from the children e.g. ‘baa’ when you say the word ‘sheep’

Discussion: Ask the children to share about a time they wandered away from their parents.

Be sure to ask why they had wandered away (i.e. what had they gone to look at or investigate).

How did your parents feel?

Refer to Matthew 18:10-14 How many sheep did the shepherd have? How many sheep wandered away

from the shepherd? (v12 one hundred, one sheep) Did the shepherd think, ‘It was only one sheep that has gone missing. I still have

99 others.’ (no, the sheep was precious, he wanted the sheep back) What did the shepherd do to show you that the lost sheep was special to him?

(v12-13 the shepherd left the other sheep, looked and looked and looked until he found the sheep, he didn’t give up until he was found, was very happ when the sheep was found)

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

What does verse 14 teach us about God and his heart? (he doesn’t want anyone to wander away, perish / be lost)

Jesus told this parable to remind us that each and everyone of us is precious to him. He does not want any of us to wander away from him. Wandering away from Jesus means loving things or people more than Jesus. What might chidlren begin to love more than Jesus? (money, things, friends, family, sports, popularity, parties etc)

Application: What is the thing you may be tempted to love more than Jesus? Is there anyone you think could do with some encouragement to keep going and

to keep loving and following Jesus?

We should have the same concern for each other as the shepherd had for the lost sheep. We don’t want anyone to wander away from Jesus.

Crown summary: today’s word: Loving!

Pray:Thank God for our loving shepherd. Pray that we would be careful to not wander away from him. Pray for those who do not know Jesus as their shepherd.

Lesson 8 Matthew 21:1-17, Zechariah 9 – Welcome God’s

KingMain point: Jesus is the King God promised would come.

Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20, Hebrews 4:15Intro game: (choose a game depending on size of area and time available to you– you do not need to play all the games!):

Under the branches and Donkey game (Need space)

Instructions for Under The Branches Game:Form two teams of equal number and equal spread of ages. Teams compete against each other. Divide each team in half, forming two lines that face each other. All children then form an arch (i.e. palm branches) with the person in their team standing opposite them. On Go the first pair in each team drops their arch and runs under the arches of their team mates to the end of the room, touches the wall, then runs back around the outside of their team and to their places.

When they are back the pair standing beside them do the same. Make sure all children run in the same direction and touch the same wall. When all have finished, first pair drops their branches (i.e. arms) and sit on the ground. All other pairs follow down the line, until all are seated. First team seated wins.

Instructions for Donkey Game: Form teams of equal number and equal spread of ages. Teams compete against each other. Divide each team in half, form two groups on opposite walls. Designate one side as the disciples and the other side as the young donkeys. On Go, one child from the disciples’ side has to run and select a young donkey. Then together, they race back to that child’s starting place (child who plays the donkey must travel on all fours like a donkey). When they both arrive back, a second child is allowed to run and select a young

donkey, and so on until all donkeys have been selected. First team finished wins.

Link:In today’s true Bible story we see that a man called Zechariah said God’s King would come and that when he did he would ride into Jerusalem on a young donkey. He also said that people would welcome their king and wave palm branches – let’s see what happens and who get treated as king.

What’s The King Riding? (space can be more contained)Need: words written on cards that a King could come riding in/on: motorbike, speedboat, horse, camel, limousine, train, jet, ocean liner…

Each group is given a card. The group has to create a frozen statue or a short mime that depicts a King riding on whatever is written on the card. Example: group has to create a statue or mime King riding in a train. Each group performs their statue/mime and the audience has to guess what the King came riding in/on.

Link:We expect kings to ride in fancy cars, fast jets, magnificent horses etc. but in today’s true Bible story we see a king who came into town on a donkey. A humble king who came to save people.

Discussion: If you were a King or a Queen what would you choose to ride in or on as you

entered a big city? Read Matthew 21:4-5

o Matthew remind us of a promise God made through his messenger Zechariah five hundred years before Jesus was born. What promise did God make? (one day Israel’s King would come, he would be humble, riding on a young donkey)

Super Human Term 1 2018 God’s Promised King

What did the people do when they saw Jesus riding on the young donkey? (v8-9 they spread their cloaks and palm branches on the road, called out praises to God’s king)

What did the people shout out about this King? (v9 hooray – great excitement and joy, Son of David – he comes as a King because David was the great King, comes in God’s name – he is sent by God)

Why do you think Jesus chose a donkey? (v5 Jesus rode a donkey because, years before, a prophet (messenger) named Zechariah had said that Jerusalem’s King would come riding on a young donkey, he is a humble King)

Who does the King come to? (what has this King come to do for them?) (v5 he has come to them – the people, he would save them)

Application: Jesus is the King God promised would come. But have you asked Jesu sot be

your king? Do you trust Jesus to save you? Are you obeying Jesus as your king? Do you praise king Jesus?

Crown summary: Today’s word: Promised!

PrayPraise Jesus for being the promised king come to save. Thank God for always keeping his promises that were made through prophets like Zechariah.

Matthew 26-27 – Betrayal of God’s KingMain point: God uses the bad things people do to make good

things happen.Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1:20, Hebrews 4:15

Intro game:Brains or butts (not much space required)Write up a series of 20 statements about what you’ve learnt this last term from Matthew’s Gospel. Half the statements should be true (i.e. King Herod tried to kill Jesus when he was a young boy) and half the statements should be false (i.e. John walked on water). The statements should begin with ten very obvious answers (i.e. Jesus was amazed by the Centurion’s faith) and get progressively harder (i.e. Judas went with Jesus up the mountain and saw his clothes go white).

Ask all children to stand. Each child has to decide whether the statement is true or false. If they think it is true, they put their hands on their heads (brains). If they think it not true, they put their hands on their bottoms (butts). If they are correct, they remain standing. If they are incorrect, they sit down. The aim is to see who is the last one standing.

Link:Matthew is very clear, Jesus is the King he promised would come. But King Jesus came to save his people. The only way he could do that was to die for them. This was all part of God’s plan.Judas was one of the twelve men chosen by Jesus to follow him around and to learn from him. But Judas loved money more than he loved Jesus. Let’s hear how Judas betrayed God’s King and handed him over so that Jesus could be arrested and killed.

Story: Matthew 26:1-5, 14-16, 20-25, 47-56; 27:3-10 Use the script below and tell the story with pictures (pictures in

separate file) Use the script and draw a series of large chalk drawings as your retell

the story- Picture 1: draw Judas, add moneybag, add eyes looking at moneybag, add his hand going into moneybag, add evil expression- Picture 2: draw Judas and Priests, add moneybag being passed between them, add smile to Judas’ face- Picture 3: draw Jesus praying, add Judas kissing Jesus- Picture 2 repeated: add arrow across top of moneybag pointing from Judas to Priests (i.e. Judas wanting to give it back), change Judas’ expression to sad

Discussion: Share your High, share your LOW. Ask the children to share one high

point and one low point from term 1 with the person sitting beside them.

Jesus also had highs and lows. What were some highs? What were some lows?

o Highs: Baptism when God the Father spoke from heaven On the mountain when God the Father spoke from heaven When a centurion put his faith in him

o Lows: When people walked away from him and did not recognise

him When his own special followers failed to trust him When he was betrayed by a friend

What sort of person was Judas? (Judas was a thief, loved money, didn’t care about the poor, stole money from the disciples; money collection)

Read Matthew 26:1-2, 21,25 What things did Jesus know were going to happen to him? (he knew he

was going to be betrayed by a disciple and he knew it was Judas) What bad things did Judas do? (he went to the priests and asked how

much they’d give him if he gave them Jesus) How did Judas betray Jesus? (led the soldiers to where Jesus was

praying, pointed out who Jesus was by kissing him)

Jesus was arrested and taken to Pilate. What was Judas doing at this time? (he was sorry he’d done it, tried to return the money, knew he’d sinned, knew Jesus was innocent, knew Jesus’ death would be his fault, ended up hanging himself.)

God used the bad thing Judas had done to make a good thing happen. What is the good thing? (because Jesus died, we can now be saved and be God’s friends)

Application: Bad things will happen to us. Does that mean that God has forgotten

us? Or that God is unable to stop bad things happening to us? Do you thank God that he let a bad thing happen to Jesus so that you

could be saved?

Crown summary: today’s word: Saviour!

Pray Thank God for an amazingly bad thing to make an amazingly good thing happen. Jesus died so that we can be saved!
