WEEK 1 JOURNAL

Moving from physical to online classrooms:

The difference between physical classroom and online classroom has been discussed:

In physical classroom, there are basically three elements in teaching-learning process: Student, Teacher and the content. In online class, teacher goes to be facilitator who provides various tools and different interactions between these three elements for effective teaching-learning. The interactions that normally take place between these elements in teaching-learning process are:

i) Teacher-content

ii) Teacher-Student

iii) Student-content

iv) Student – student

v) Teacher- teacher

vi) Content -content

Question Asked:

Q1: Can you list one example of the interactions that happened between these three in a normal classroom?

Answer: Teacher asking question to students is Teacher - student interaction, teacher explaining the concept with the help of text book or course notes is Teacher - content interaction. Student solving problem on given topic by discussing with classmates is student - student interaction, and student solving problems with the help of content is student - content interaction. Student asks difficulty to teacher is Student-Teacher interaction.

This entire thing remains the same in online class room with only difference that the teachers become the facilitator. The facilitator prepares videos, problems and discussion forums.

II. Learning Dialogues (LeDs):

The features of LeDs are adjusting the speed, volume, screen size, cc button, time transcript which is highlighted and the additional feature is Reflection Spot where the video automatically pause to get the feeling of sitting in the real class room and answering to the teachers question

Question Asked:

Q1: What is the equivalent of such a video in a regular teaching-learning interaction within your classroom?

Answer: The equivalent is the teacher delivering lectures in front of student using blackboard.

Q2. What additional features does the video provide you apart from the regular information transmission of the content?

Answer: In online learning process, video can be used multiple times by rewinding, video can be seen at convenient time slots, videos can be seen anywhere, can be paused and the given problem could be solved first. The void can be seen until understood by student.

III. Learning by doing activities (LbDs)

The LbDs activities are based on LeDs video and solving multiple choice question.

1. Solving the practice problems after watching the learning videos in online classrooms provides the following advantages:

· It helps to reinforce the key concepts in the student

· Using show answer button, the student is provided the explanation of which answers are correct and why. It also gives explanation for why other options are incorrect

· Each student gets opportunity to answer the question and the feedback which is not found in classroom teaching

Question Asked:

Q3. What advantage do you see in answering these questions immediately after watching LeDs?

Answer: Student can rethink what has been taught in LeD videos and reinforce the key concept used in it. Concept could be polished.

IV Learning Extension Resources (LXT)

Concept: Lxt provides use of additional resources to help the student to go deep into learning.

· The additional resources may be videos, links to various web pages or documents, research paper on particular technology already present.

· The assimilation quizzes help the students to adapt the key concepts of the topic from

Additional resources used.

Question Asked:

Q1: Can you think about the function of assimilation quizzes?

Answer: The assimilation quizzes help us to test whether we understood key concept from learning material

V. Learning experience interaction (LxIs)

Concept: LxIs provides an opportunity for listener to share their ideas and own experience to other listener by using discussion forum

Question Asked:

Q1: Can you think of advantages of having such a structured group discussion like the one which I explained right now?

Answer: The advantages of having a structured group discussion with a focus questions and specific instruction is that,

1. It enables each and every student to share their knowledge with others what they have learnt

2. It enable student - student interaction (learning by experience)

3. Discussion is more engaging.
