MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: 1. Timeline PowerPoint of the Construction of Florida’s Historic Capitol 2. Florida’s Historic Capitol Timeline worksheet 3. Article on Governor William Jennings and Comprehension Questions SUGGESTED TEACHING TIME: 30-60 minutes 1. Project the PowerPoint on Florida’s Historic Capitol. 2. Pass out the timeline worksheet on Florida’s Historic Capitol. 3. Pose the question, “What kinds of activities take place in Florida’s Capitol building? Who works in the Capitol?” Possible student responses are: “Legislators, lawmakers, congressmen, and congress women, people who make the laws for Florida, the Senate and House of Representatives.” Teachers may choose to offer a more detailed explanation about the kinds of laws that legislators create and why. 4. Teach students about the history of Florida’s Historic Capitol by presenting the pictures and captions in the PowerPoint. Provide opportunities for students to ask questions and offer comments during the presentation. 5. Direct students to write down important events on the timeline worksheet.
