Question 3Study the interpretations below and then answer the question which follows

Interpretation 1

Jazz dances, such as the Charleston and Black Bottom, were seen as undermining the family order by encouraging divorce. The singing, dancing, and behaviours it encouraged were seen as un-Godly, and that it degraded both men and women. It was resisted by many in the South, whose conservative ways and old norms were being challenged.[BBC documentary, ‘The Deep South vs The Jazz Age: A struggle of acceptance’, 2013].

Interpretation 2

Jazz music become increasingly popular during the 1920s. Black musicians pushed forward this change, with fine acts such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington flourishing in this time. They were not only accepted by black and white audiences alike, but became celebrities who encouraged others to strive for similar success.[Barry Clinton Rusedski, historian writing in his book ‘The rise and rise of Jazz in America during the 20th century’.]

Do the interpretations support the view that the Jazz Age was widely accepted in America during the 1920’s? [10]

[In your answer you should refer to how and why the interpretations may differ. Use your own knowledge and understanding of the wider historical debate over the issue to reach a well-supported judgement.]

October 1929 saw shareholders sell their shares at unprecedented levels. Some people realised that prices had risen too high and wanted to sell their shares before the prices fell. Panic hit Wall Street. This panic was the main reason for the end of the prosperity. Nearly 13 million shares were sold on Black Thursday, October 24th, and the market could not recover.
