Draw Around the Room: PastelsTask: Create a landscape with blended colors.

About pastels...● Made from pigment and binder. The higher quality pastels have more pigment

and less binder making them softer and richer in color. ● Not the same as chalk but sometimes called chalk pastels to differentiate them

from oil pastels.● Blends, layers, and mixes easily- some people even call the drawings pastel

paintings.● Can be difficult to create fine detail. (Use the corner or a pencil if need be)● Messy- smudges easily and can’t be totally erased. Needs to be sprayed with

fixative when finished just like charcoal.

● Never blow on pastels to remove dust - it’s not good to breathe in the dust. It’s better to gently tap the drawing on the edge of the trashcan and clean off the table at the end of class.

Draw Around the Room: Oil PastelsUse colored pencils or oil pastel to draw an eye- create textures and blend colors.

About oil pastels...● Looks like a crayon but with a softer, creamy texture.● Should create an effect like a painting- blend colors to create interest.● Available in a wide range of colors.● They smudge easily which can be good or

bad.● Oil pastels do not erase and they pick up other colors when layered so need to

be wiped off.● Can use on white or colored paper.

Draw Around the Room: Colored PencilTask: Use colored pencils or oil pastel to draw an eye- create textures and blend colors.

About colored pencils...

● Compressed pigments held together with wax.● Cheaper ones have more wax & less pigment (Crayola)

more expensive have less wax & more pigment. (Prismacolor)

● Work best to layer colors instead of pressing really hard with one.

● If you press too hard, it might not let you layer anymore color.

● Easy to achieve fine detail.● Can create smooth rendering or texture depending on the

technique.● Don’t plan on erasing them.● Have soft cores that can break easily if dropped. ● Need to be sharpened often and by hand.

Draw Around the Room: MarkersTask: Make a design that uses a variety of colors and lines OR draw something and layer multiple colors.

Markers characteristics

● Liquid ink is held in the tube and it comes out the felt tip.● Available in a wide range of colors.● Good for BOLD lines or outlines.● Different sized tips- thick, thin, brush, etc.● Vary the pressure and angle of tip to change the stroke size.● You can layer colors to do some mixing.● Can “bleed”- use it to your advantage or avoid it.● Layer marks usually show. Hard to achieve smooth blending / transitions.● Too much pressure can smash and ruin the marker tip.● Cannot erase.
