INHALED STEROID/LONG ACTING BRONCHODILATOR COMBINATION Advair, Breo Ellipta, Dulera, Symbicort How They Work: It is a Combination Therapy – two medications in one inhaler. The anti-inflammatory is a topical inhaled steroid. The bronchodilator is long acting albuterol. When We Use Them: For the daily long-term prevention of asthma in children who have not responded adequately to inhaled steroids and montelukast alone. How to Use Them: Take every day exactly as directed. Use a spacer with any metered dose inhaler. Continue exactly as directed during an asthmatic flare. Rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after Do not keep dry powder inhalers in a steamy bathroom Do not blow into a dry powder inhaler Make sure your child is getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D DO NOT Use as a rescue inhaler DO NOT Increase during an asthmatic flare DO NOT Ever take extra doses Possible Side Effects – not common: Hoarseness, thrush, increased heart rate, nervousness, headache, itching, rash Black Box Warning: There has been reported increased risk of death in patients taking these medications. This is felt to be due to misuse of the medication and not because of the medication itself. It is especially important to follow all our directions and these medications and have regular follow up with us as we recommend. ‘
