Message Stick: Big Boss

Sunday, 13 May 2012

Murrungga Island is situated in the top end of Arnhem Land. This is where Message Stick finds 95-year-old Baymarrwangga or as she is affectionately known, ‘Big Boss’. Baymarrwangga was also awarded ‘The Senior Australian of the Year’ on this year's Australia Day.

In the nine decades since her birth on the island of Murrungga, Baymarrwangga has seen the arrival of missionaries, Japanese and European fishermen and has endured harsh times through the war. Her story documents a historical legacy of government neglect and suppression of bilingual education: because of this the language and culture of the Yan-nhangu people was nearly lost.

Undaunted, Baymarrwangga has almost single-handedly nurtured transmission of local knowledge from generation to generation through a lifelong commitment to caring for her culture and country. Her single greatest achievement has been the Yan-nhangu Dictionary.

The Dictionary Project is actively capturing and recording rich and vibrant rituals plus the ecological knowledge of the sacred ancestral sites of the seas and islands. The purpose of the Dictionary Project is to preserve the Yan-nhangu language, culture and local knowledge from the potentially damaging consequences of rapid global change, and most importantly to safeguard it for future generations.

Baymarrwangga had also started the Crocodile Islands Rangers Program where a dedicated group of rangers patrol just under 10,000 square kilometres of the Arafura Sea defending the breeding and nesting sites of many endangered turtle and other species.

In the face of many obstacles, this great-great-grandmother has shown extraordinary leadership in caring for the cultural and biological integrity of her beloved Crocodile Islands.

Auction Room

Sunday, 13 May 2012

This week on Auction Room, William McInnes reveals autographs from the earliest days of The Beatles.

Gillian Meade lives in Lilydale, on the rural fringe of Melbourne, but she grew up in London where her father had a diplomatic posting, working at the imposing Australia House on the Strand. It was here, on the eve of their Down Under Tour in 1964 that the Fab Four gathered for an Australian government reception.

Gillian was too young to be there, but her father Harold Macdonald (the High Commissioner's secretary) asked John, Paul, George and Ringo to sign the official reception invitation card as a souvenir for her. In the early Sixties anything signed by the boys from Liverpool was gold. Are Gillian's signatures the real deal? We cast an expert eye over the document. If it is authentic, it means big dollars for Gillian.

Gillian has treasured this memento and had always wanted to pass it on to her children, but with her husband Dean in full-time, expensive medical care, Gillian needs the money. So off she went with high expectations to Leonard Joel Auctions.

Meanwhile, Popi Mavromatis is taking several of her exceptional 1960s tin-plate space toys and robots to Leonard Joel Auctions, which specialises in selling vintage and classic toys.

The sale is completed with a superb penny farthing cycle in perfect condition, and the bidding is epic.

Please be advised that auction results are embargoed until broadcast

Compass: Hospital Chaplains: Good Grief

Sunday, 13 May 2012

Every day in Australia over 40,000 patients are in hospital. While medicine tends their bodies, hospital chaplains tend their souls. Over eight episodes we follow our chaplains' journeys alongside the patients and their families at three major hospitals. They are Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist. Regardless of their faith, they all meet the same challenges - to help make sense of the mystery of illness, pain, suffering and despair. This series offers a unique bedside view of the daily life and death drama of hospital life through our chaplains' eyes.

This week at Liverpool Hospital Jacqui has chronic liver disease and not much time left. Chaplain Graham has supported her, and her devoted son Lance, throughout her illness. When Jacqui dies Chaplain Graham is on hand to help and guide Lance through his grief. Meantime, at Royal North Shore Hospital trainee chaplains Paul Hurst and Dianne Burke are both put to the test while working the wards.

The Diamond Queen

Sunday, 13 May 2012 New SeriesIn the first of this three-part series which looks at the life and achievements of The Queen, Andrew Marr tells the story of the young girl who never expected to reign over us. sixty years after she acceded to the throne, he looks at what she actually does for us both at home and abroad.

Marr observes the day-to-day duties of the Royal Family and hears from the Duke of Cambridge (Prince William), Prince Harry, the Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward), the Princess Royal (Princess Anne) and Princess Eugenie about the remarkable skills The Queen has acquired in 60 years of walkabouts, state visits and receptions. The Queen has a private motto - "I have to be seen to be believed" - this program bears witness to the extraordinary energy that she puts into every engagement, however small, however grand.

The film looks closely at the influence of The Queen's grandfather, father and mother, the impact of the abdication, and the unique relationship between the Head of State and her Government. The Queen has seen 12 Prime Ministers in her reign, and Marr looks at the special relationships she has had with them, and hears from David Cameron, Tony Blair and Sir John Major.

Marr also follows The Queen to the Middle East and the USA to assess her global impact on British trade and international relations. The Duke of York (Prince Andrew) gives his perspective on The Queen's impact on overseas trade and Foreign Secretary William Hague and David Cameron gauge her effect on British standing abroad.

Time Team: St Ebbas

Tuesday, 15 May 2012

Tonight, host Tony Robinson leads the team to the village of Beadnell on a beautiful stretch of the Northumbrian coast, to explore an unusual promontory, from which mysterious fragments of human bone have emerged over recent years.

Legend ties the site to local seventh-century Saint Ebbe, and it's widely believed that a 13th-century chapel stood here. But could there also be the remains of an earlier structure on the site, perhaps dating to the time of St Ebbe herself? Or are the earthworks on the promontory an indication of Viking or even Iron Age inhabitants?

The only way to find out is by putting spades into the earth, but, before long, the team is stumbling onto confusing signs of Second World War defences. And then, shockingly, they find skeleton bones in the trenches. It's a sobering discovery, and one that raises more questions than it answers.

Artscape: A Law Unto Himself

Tuesday, 15 May 2012

Roger Law was a creator of the highly-successful UK puppet show Spitting Image which ran for 13 years before he deported himself to Australia in 1996 to explore his remaining artistic talent. He underwent a journey of renewal in the bush that ultimately led him to China.

"If I had stayed in England, I would have been asked to do what I had done for quite a lengthy career even then over and over again. Whereas I knew in Australia, it would maybe, if I worked at it, [be] a whole new start."

Aged in his 60s, he returned to his teenage art-school passion for drawing and ceramics. As Artist-in-Residence in the cells of a former jail, now the National Art School in Sydney, he started working in clay. Freed from the burden of notoriety, Law found himself in a place where he could create without the fear of failure.

Australia not only gave him that freedom but it also gave him new subject matter with wildlife as surreal as anything he'd created for Spitting Image. He travelled the length and breadth of the country, most often to the north. He was entranced by Kakadu.

In the early days, Law wasn't sure where his forays into clay would take him but that changed with a timely meeting with Chinese-Australian ceramicist Ah Xian. He introduced Law to the carvers and pottery workshops of China's Jingdezhen, a whole city famously devoted to making porcelain.

Wild Life At The Zoo

Wednesday, 16 May 2012

Narrated by Alan Brough (Spicks & Specks), Wild Life At The Zoo is a fly-on-the-wall look into the workings of one of the world's most renowned zoos, Taronga - home to 340 species and 3,400 animals across 52 acres of prime real estate on the shores of Sydney Harbour.

Over eight episodes viewers will be treated to a range of dramatic and heartfelt events revealing the intimate bond that exists between the animals and their keepers. Between high risk medical procedures, moving chimps to their new multimillion dollar sanctuary or helping with the birth of Sumatran cubs, this series shouldn't be missed.

After a worldwide search Taronga keepers have found a silverback gorilla in France called Kibali who will be introduced to their existing gorilla community. The goal is to have an unrelated male take over breeding from the current aging silverback to maintain the genetic diversity within Australasia.

The move is a big task not only for the keepers but for Kibali who leaves a sanctuary in a small town on the western side of France where the first part of his trip is on the road travelling to Paris then on a freight aircraft to Sydney.

Kibali's French keeper is able to feed him and hydrate him during the flight. When he arrives he's taken to quarantine for a month and then introduced to one of the fiery females where the courtship begins.

Wednesday, 16 May 2012

There is much relief and whooping when Charlie (Abe Forsythe) is given a clean bill of health and returns home. But his happy homecoming is clouded when he learns of Roo's (Alison Bell) attempts to sleep with Marcus (Damon Herriman). Roo and Charlie quickly find themselves plunged into less than comfortable conversations that thankfully end up bonding them further together. However, when this bonding takes on an amorous dimension, Charlie's health rapidly deteriorates and Roo is propelled once more to get Marcus to heal her. But how, when he has so adamantly rejected her?

Roo decides it is time to get sneaky and much to EJ's (Celia Pacquola) consternation resorts to extreme and unconventional means that involve chicken noodle soup, sticky tape and banana icecream. But Roo hasn't thought her plan through and it quickly becomes apparent that she's going to need a contingency. Not easily deterred, Roo enlists Zach's (Toby Truslove) help in getting what she wants from Marcus. The way she sees it, Zach kind of owes her. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't be the death survivor he claims to be. Despite Zach's best efforts, Marcus becomes aware of Roo's plan and enjoys the torment of confronting her. Humiliated, Roo has no choice but to retreat - for now. It seems Marcus once again holds the gloating upper hand but privately we see just how rattled he is by her dogged ways.

Pandemics: a Catalyst Special report - how effective is our front line of defence against deadly viruses? How severe is the threat to public health from those who don't immunise? And the mystery killer that could be blowing in the wind.

Danger ZonesVaccines have vanquished diseases and saved millions of lives. But a band of parents, fuelled by exaggerated fears, outright misinformation or simple complacency, are now reopening the door for known killers. Maryanne Demasi visits Australia's ‘Danger Zone’.

Virus HuntersHumanity is at greater risk of a deadly pandemic than at any other time in our history. Densely populated cities, air travel and concentrated livestock practices provide the ideal circumstances for contagion. Standing between us and the next big killer is a team of virus-hunting scientists who are going on the offensive -finding these pathogens before they find us. Graham Phillips dons protective suit and investigates.

Kawasaki DiseaseAfter more than 40 years of research, Kawasaki Disease remains a mystery. First diagnosed in Japan by Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki in 1967, we don't know whether it's a virus, bacteria, or something else. Children can display a bright red rash, red lips, red, bloodshot eyes, swollen painful hands and feet and a swollen neck gland. The real worry is the damaging effect on the heart. It is the most common cause of childhood heart disease in the developed world - including Australia. Mark Horstman investigates a theory that it may be carried on the wind.
