Discussion on Race

1. How are you impacted by race in everyday life? How about when you travel?

2. What are ways to fight white supremacy? How about when we travel?

*Is grammar racist?

“The Danger of a Single Story”

Whole class discussion.

· What did you like about the video?

· Kipling: Related to Orientalism, this idea of “White Man’s Burden.” How does this relate to the TED talk?

· Where do you see elements of this in the travel industry?

· What are some ways we can gain exposure to multiple stories, not just one?

Meme Activity

In small groups, do the following Blackboard discussion: apply Burke’s pentad to “The Danger of a Single Story.” Then, choose something from the TED talk (a quote, a moment, etc.) and make a meme from it in line with the message of the talk (not a meme making fun of it). When you are done, apply the pentad to your meme.

· Has the meaning changed with the genre change?

· How does the pentad change?

· Has the audience changed (TED talk vs. on social media, presumably)? What is significant about the change if it has?

· So, does medium matter? How so?

Be prepared to present your meme / explanation to the class.
