AS ART & DESIGN COASTLINES OUTLINE: The general concept of this unit is to generate and explore lines of enquiry using a range of media and techniques on the theme of ‘Coastlines’. You will record observations and gather, select and organise visual information. From share ‘starting points’ which will include observation and critical studies, you will work independently to develop your ideas and go on to produce innovative final pieces that make a statement. IDEAS: You will initially explore the theme from a number of angles. This will include independent research, observational studies from still life groups and visits to collect visual information. You may look at any, or all of the following. Hopefully, you will have plenty of your own ideas. PEOPLE at the coast. This might include anyone, from fishermen loading their boats to children building sandcastles. Teenagers gambling on the slotties to OAP’s on a day trip. SCAPES at the coast. Be it dramatic seascapes, rugged cliffs, busy docks, deserted beaches, rocky shores, cafes or dilapidated piers. WILDLIFE at the coast. Gulls, penguins, fish, eels, jellyfish, crabs, lobsters and nets, seals, dolphins and coral. What else might you observe and record on a coastal footpath? TRANSPORT at the coast. Boats come in many shapes and sizes, but you could also draw from jet skis and surfboards, coaches and trains. OBJECTS of the coast. What’s washed up on the shore after a stormy night? Shells, nets, ropes, seaweed, plastic and metals. Another spin on this is to look at things that represent the coast; such as snorkels and flippers, buckets and spades, deck chairs, beach towels and picnic items. The real beauty of this project is that all of the above is accessible to us. INDUCTION TASK: Record observations and gather, select and organise visual information on the ‘Coastlines’ theme. You will be expected to display and discuss at least 2 A3 pages in your first AS lesson.

OUTLINE: The general concept of this unit is to generate and explore lines of enquiry using a range of media and techniques on the theme of ‘Coastlines’. You will record ob-servations and gather, select and organise visual information. From share ‘starting points’ which will include observation and critical studies, you will work independently to develop your ideas and go on to produce innovative final pieces that make a state-ment.

Teenagers gambling on the slotties to OAP ’s on a day trip.

SCAPES at the coast. Be it dramatic seascapes, rugged cliffs, busy docks, de-serted beaches, rocky shores, cafes or dilapidated piers.
