President’s Report - 2007

The really big events of the 2007 all seemed to occur toward the end of the year that saw another solid club rugby season in a club that has grown to become Hawke’s Bays premier ‘sports club’.

The most significant was the passing of our foundation Patron and Life Member, Bruce Hawkins, on 9th November. Many words have been spoken about Bruce’s involvement with Hawke’s Bay rugby and , more pertinently, Old Boys Marist rugby. The man was a legend, revered by young and old in our club, by players and supporters. Everyone knew Bruce and everyone respected him – hugely. We will miss him, but we will never forget him.

The second significant happening was the selection of our very own MJ into the fold of the Super 14 Hurricanes. Has any player deserved this accolade more than MJ? I think not. Like Bruce, Michael Johnson is greatly respected throughout the Hawke’s Bay rugby fraternity. That respect, gained over several years of honest rugby toil, was greatly enhanced by the performance of the Kelt Capital Magpies in the Air New Zealand Cup this year. This success was the third significant event of the year.

The fourth was a bit of a bummer! Once again the All Blacks failing in the Rugby World Cup. I won’t go on, but at least we had the magpies to cheer us up!

On the club playing scene this year, the success of the Sideline Bar 3rds in both the first round and the second round was true club highlight. After years of graft this was a fitting success for a really dedicated bunch of guys. All of our teams had some success this year, but perhaps the second round showed that we have a little more planning and organisation to put in place if we are to have more on the field success in 2008.

Socially the club has thrived. With Marist Football and Marist Netball in the winter and Old Boys Marist Cricket in the summer using our excellent facilities regularly, it was sometimes the case of ‘can we all fit in’. I know we are the envy of many other clubs and every Saturday,

Page 4:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

even when our rugby teams are playing away, we still had a busy clubrooms.

3I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chairman Bernie Blundell for his years at the helm of the club. Bernie has competently lead an excellent team of club Directors. You are all named in this document so I won’t repeat that, but the Club really has been in excellent hands over the last few years. The visions we had continue to fall into place nicely.

Thanks also to all our sponsors. You know and we know that you are an integral part of our club. I hope you have enjoyed your involvement. Further thanks also to all those involved in the actual running of the game; coaches, managers, strappers, water boys: we know how much time you all give to this game of ours, and we really appreciate your efforts.

Many of our future players will, of course, come from our OB Marist nursery: our junior Club. Many thanks to Gary Leahy and all of his team of always enthusiastic supporters for their great efforts (once again) throughout the year. The junior club organisers put huge effort and energy, not to mention time, into their passion and this shows, year after year, with the success rate of our junior teams.

Congratulations to all players, of all ages, who made higher honours this year. As mentioned earlier in this report, MJ is the club’s standout for 2007, but many others, from the Kelt Capital Magpies to Ross Shield selection, all did Old Boys Marist proud.

Merry Christmas to each and everyone of you and your families. I hope the coming festive season is a special one for you all, and I look forward to renewing our acquaintance in 2008.

Director of Rugby Report

This year the club fielded four teams in the Hawkes Bay wide club competitions with mixed results for the year. A fine effort considering in the second round two top clubs withdrew their senior second and senior third sides from the respective grades due

to lack of numbers. We started the season by traveling to Rotorua to compete in the Spillane Tournament and duly shared the trophy with North Harbour after being drawn at full time and extra time. This was the first time we had won back to back Spillane’s.

The format has now been moved away from Easter to a pre-season tournament which seems to benefit all teams competing as they prepare for the club season kick off. It does tend to be a hard ask playing 2 games in 2 days coupled with hard grounds and summer sun!! However sevens do it so to can the fifteens code. Well done to the boys who made the trip and effort to perform and display the true Napier old boys Marist spirit.

TREMAIN REAL ESTATE PREMIERS

In the first round (Nash Cup) we were relatively successful with only two losses. The Spillane and first round results gave us great confidence as we headed into the Madison Trophy round, even considering the pending departure of our Magpie players in the middle of the round. The front half of the2nd round season started well however, in the last half it is fair to say that the “wheels started to wobble”. A draw against Clive started the slippery slope. (Never blame the ref’s boys) By the end of the round we were five points away from the top four, a position at season end that, as a club, are very disappointed about. It should go without saying that our premier side should always be in the top four (no excuses). Perhaps a bit harsh but we have excellent players/coaches /management and weneed to continue to produce excellent results.

RED STEEL 2NDS

Page 6:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

A year of more losses than wins. Lack of players being able to make trainings was a problem and once again lack of front rowers was a concern. Credit must be given to the players as many were required to

5

play out of position. The draw posed a big problem with plenty of travel. Feel rest assured that the 2008 season will have the seconds playing at the same park as the Prems as the new format has confirmed.

SIDELINE BAR 3RDS

A fantastic season with only one loss against the Wairoa Athletic team. Perhaps if the boys took some travel sickness pills they could have gone unbeaten! This side had good numbers every week and competition for positions was fierce. Winning both rounds was an excellent achievement even considering some players showed they would fit in very well in the premier side, as was the case with a few old hats strived to get the prems into the top four. A special mention must be given to the coachesand management of the thirds for their consistent communications with players and other coaches. We look forward to seeing all of these players back next year. (Age is just a number men!).

DAVMET COLTS

A great bunch of young guys once again this year. The colts got to the final in the first round and lost to a very good Havelock North side. The second round saw us in the top four and playing the champion Havelock North side for a spot in the final. Unfortunately not to be this year as the big Havelock lads in the last twenty minutes poured on the pressure and won convincingly. Every year the “two Chris” have the uncanny knack to find talent and this year was no exception as once again they have produced some very fine players who no doubt will be playing premier rugby in the very near future.

SUMMARY

In finishing, a big thanks to all coaches and players for their commitment this season. I would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing the coaches and managers of all

grades conversing more amongst each other from the word go during the season as we at NOBM seem to be often behind the eight ball in this regard.

6

Below I add our mission statement to this commentary and hope it will give us a successful a more successful year in 2008 . Enjoy your small break men and lets all work together to make us the best club in the Bay!

Why would you play for Old Boys Marist? We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist - that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal. Our teams are always well presented. At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives. In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers. To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

Terry GittingDirector of Rugby

Director of Club Management’s Report

The clubrooms continue to be the focal point for all affiliate Sports Clubs every Saturday afternoon/evening right throughout the summer and winter seasons. The bar turnover continued to grow this year despite not having any major tournaments such as Spillane which had

occurred in the 3 previous years. This is largely due to the acceptance of most of our sportspeople and supporters that these clubrooms are the home of the sporting club they play for. We thank the Marist Football, Marist Netball and Napier Old Boys Marist Cricket Clubs for their

Page 8:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

continued support to ensure the continued viability of running the clubrooms.

7During the winter months we continued the $10 Bar Tab for player of the day for all teams in rugby, netball and football clubs. This creates that additional incentive for players to join their team members for a refreshment after playing.

Our aim is not only to have the best sports clubs on the field but also to be known as the best “Entertainment Sports Club” in Hawkes Bay off the field. To this end we continued with live bands on 5 occasions throughout the season, commencing with a new initiative of a St Pat’s Night Irish themed band. This was a great evening for those who attended but being pre-season meant most were still no quite into the zone.

During the year we invested in an additional bar till system and eftpos terminal to help speed up service during those rush times every Saturday afternoon. We understand the need for fast refreshment after your game and the investment has certainly help achieve this. We also continued to promote “Big Screen Rugby” whenever the opportunity arose and supported this with promotions of our sponsor’s product Tui and the use of the Tui couch as the special Tui Hospitality Box with free refreshments and eats during the game.

To enhance the fact that Tremain Field is the centre of all HB Rugby Representative games out side the Magpies, we put a proposal to HBRFU to cater for all aftermatch functions in our clubrooms. This proposal was accepted and all HB and visiting teams were most thankful of the decent meal and hospitality offered by our club on these occasions. This is a bonus for our club after the normal club playing season has finished and enables us to show off our superb facilities to many other rugby players throughout the country. We were also the hub for the HB Ross Shield tournament hosted in Napier this year. This tournament was held over 5 days in September and again exposed our clubrooms to the many potential senior club players of the future.

A special thanks to bar manager Angela and her staff and also caterer Alice and her staff for their continued work and thanks to all who supported the clubrooms throughout the year. Remember, we are open from 4pm every Saturday (except Xmas & New Year) during the summer. “Roll on 2008”.

FINANCE REPORT - 2007

It gives me pleasure to present the below Financial Statements for the year ended 30 September 2007. It should be noted that the below statements are un-audited and are a summarized version. The club’s finances and financial statements are currently in the process of being audited and a full set of audited financial statements will be available to members at the AGM on 10th December 2007.

From a financial perspective, the 2007 year has been an extremely successful year. It is satisfying to end the financial year reflecting a $36,000 Net Surplus. This is a $45,000 improvement on the 2006 year and is one all involved with the club can be proud to have contributed towards. There are a number of contributing factors that have influenced this financial success, including:

Improved Bar Revenue at consistent margins The receipt of a $10,000 donation from the Hawke’s Bay Events

Trust An approx $3,500 increase in Sponsorship & Fundraising Income A reduction in Rugby Tournament expenses An overall reduction in expenses

Bar Revenue:There has been a noticeable increase in the patronage and utilization of our facilities over the past year. A direct result of this has been an increase in Bar Sales Revenue – up $14,000 (13.1%) on last year’s result, at a consistent margin of 51.8%. This is a significant uplift when considering that the 2006 revenue includes increased bar takings as a result of hosting the 2006 Spillane Tournament.

Donation:The club has been in the fortunate position to receive a substantial donation from the Hawke’s Bay Events Trust. These funds are to be put towards future developments of the facilities.

Sponsorship/Fundraising:The successful operating of the club is in no small part due to the support and assistance we receive from our many sponsors. The financial assistance we receive from these businesses and individuals helps us to

Page 10:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

keep the club in a strong state, and we are grateful of their contributions.

9

The revenue received from the combined Sponsorship and Fundraising has shown an improvement over the 2007 year. Once again, this is significant when considering there were one off sponsorships made towards the Spillane Tournament in the 2006 year.

Expenses:Overall, club management has been successful in ensuring expenditure has been kept to a minimum. The most notable reduction of expenditure has been in Tournament Expenses, which reflects the costs of hosting the Spillane Tournament in the 2006 financial result. Other notable reductions in expenses include Playing Gear and Repairs and Maintenance.

Whilst the 2007 year has been a successful financial one, it is important to note that the club is very dependant upon outside parties for our financial success. Of the $140,000 Gross surplus detailed in the below financial statements, $82,000 is provided in the form of Grants, Sponsorships and Donations. If any of our funding from these external parties was to cease, our sound financial position may be dramatically reversed.

Moving forward, it is now important that the Board and Management group are fiscally prudent and ensure that the 2007 surplus is put towards the future growth and development of the club as a whole – both the facilities and its members. The below table gives a guide as to proposed allocation of the surplus:

Page 11:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

OtherIncrease Peter Harris Trust Fund 8% 5,000Miscellaneous (Coach development etc) 8% 5,476 10,476

We face continual price pressures in the up-keep of our facilities and fielding and running teams. The challenge we now face for the next and future years is to ensure that we continue to provide a modern, desirable environment for players, members, families and supporters, thus ensuring the club enjoys success both on and off the field.

Napier Old Boys Marist Junior Report – 2007

It has been an interesting year for junior rugby, from not fielding a 12th grade team to producing a heap of rep players to play in C & D grade rugby teams and Wakely Shield squads. The year started slowly and finished on a high, many of our goals set were attained and plans are fully underway all ready for next season.

Next year we will be introducing a new playing jersey for the 5th to 8th grade teams. We are also looking at new playing shorts; plans are in place to make this happen. With the slight hi-cup of not fielding a 12th grade team this year we have confirmed that we will be placing 13 teams into the intercity competition including a 12th grade.

The Ben Smith Memorial annual tournament between Eskview and Marist was hosted by our junior club. Games were played under lights on Bond Field. The tournament went down to the wire with Eskview retaining the trophy. However justice prevailed with Marist 11th grade beating them the following week in the competition round.

This year we hosted the bi-annual tournament with St Michael’s Rotorua. Once again we reformed an Under 14’s NOBM team to play. This team was made up of last year’s 12th grade players that went on to high school this year, with one practice under their belt, these boys were more than willing to throw everything into this game. Just ask Jonesy and Dougy (the team’s coaches). St Michael’s team had only lost two games during their season; they came down here with great expectations and were sent home packing. This is the second time we have fielded a team from outside the club, 2008 plans are to take away an under 14’s and 16’s team! We are confident of even organizing a game in Taupo as well as Rotorua.

Rep season for 2007 was a whole new kettle of fish for all involved. The Intercity Board expanded the C & D grade rep team involvement from two Napier & Hastings team in each grade to four teams plus Wairoa and CHB. The team members were selected by going to school in either the east or west zone. Our rep player and contribution was vast, not only

Page 17:  · Web viewI would suggest that this year has brought more lows than highs and the club requires all of us to hit the ground running early in the New Year. I look forward to seeing

players but coaches and managers as well as administrators. By the end of the rep season, many improved skills were learnt. 16

2008 sees a significant year for us; pre-season training, 7’s tournaments, 2008 Centenary of the Marist Rugby Club, Club Day, St Michaels visit, C & D grade reps, Wakely Shield and hopefully nigh rugby.

Weigh-in’s for 2008 will be short and sweet, not the length of time we have spent weighing-in as we have done in previous years. We will have an official player weigh-in late March. Another skills day will be organize for players and new kids keen on playing to meet and to learn some advance skills from the likes of: Peter Russell, Arthur Brown, Wakely Shield coaches etc, who will be invited to pass on their knowledge of the game. Squads will be organized for pre-season practices by beginning of April with a season kick off on May 10th, 2008.

A special thanks to the club for the usage of the gear, fields, lights and clubrooms etc. The executive will be incorporating a new format for sponsors in 2008 from which we will be promoting your business hard out, fabulous times ahead for all. Here’s to 2008!
