June 29, 1942Dear Mother and Daddy,

I received the letter from Mother today. I understand that you can’t use sugar to make candy, etc. and I don’t want you to send me you all’s sugar. We get plenty of sugar down here and I can buy sweets at the P.X. any time. Besides we aren’t supposed to keep any boxes of food or candy around.

The pen Aunt Dootz sent me is a good one and I don’t think it will break. It is the kind I wanted to get too.

We get paid tomorrow around 2:30. I don’t think I will buy a bond this month but I might get some later on.

That mighty good about Marvin getting promoted to a Lieutenant, Senior Grade. I went by to see Gratton today but he was still at work.

I am getting use to getting up early now and I don’t mind it. This morning we watched the day break.

Thanks a lot for sending the envelopes and socks but if you haven’t sent them yet don’t bother because I will get paid and I can get them down here with less trouble than you would have to take.

You have my address correct, just so long as you get 396 TSS and Barrack #11 on there it is O.K.

We had a pretty easy test today in school. In the lab we ground some drills and flanged some tubing.

Tell Red and Eugenia Hello! for me. I guess Eugenia might get a Holliday (sic) on the 4th of July. We get one on the 4th too.

Please send me Bobby’s address in your next letter. I had his address but I forgot and threw it away. I know he must be working real hard with all of his classes, drill and flying too.

Guess I’ll study a bit now.With love,Your son,Joe

July 2, 1942Dear Mother & Daddy,

I received the letter from Daddy today and also the telegram about Gen. Doolittle. Thanks a lot, I enjoyed reading it. I don’t want the letter I sent you about the training program.

Tell Jule that the reason I spelled her name “Jewell was account of my poor spelling. I haven’t seen Gratton but I went by to see him last week and he was still working. I guess I will get by and see him some time soon.

I think I am down to around 185 but I haven’t weighed lately. I still can stand some fat off my stomach though.

Bobby must really be working hard flying 3 hr, a day, worrying about check-ups (?) and going to classes and studying hard too. Every time I think I’m working hard I try to think about what Bobby is doing.

We might get paid on the 10th of July if we are lucky. If not, around the 20th. I’ll try to get the picture made the next time I get in town. I don’t think I’ll go to New Orleans any time soon but thanks a lot for the eating places.

I’m going to study for the final exam on the 1st Phase tonight. I don’t think it will be so hard because it is a multiple choice type.

Dearest Mother & Daddy,I received the letter & pictures from Daddy and also the letter from Eugenia and

the good box of cookies. Thanks a lot. I still in the hospital but I expect to be out by Wednesday or Thursday. Which will be in time to start back into the 5th Phase. I am up walking around and everything but they are slow in letting you go once they get you. I don’t know what I had yet but it was serious.

George came by to see me and a boy from my barracks has been bringing my mail. I might not get some of your mail as soon as I other wise would though.

I glad you got to go in swimming & glad to see that Mother went in to (sic). Too bad you lost the pistol (?) but its a good thing it wasn’t a tire.

I haven’t heard from my OCS application yet, my being in the hospital might slow down my hearing from it. That is if they have called for me while I was in the hospital. I am going to see about it as soon as I get out of the hospital.

I’m might I didn’t remember Daddy’s birthday but I just don’t seem to remember anyone’s birthday. I know you had a good time at the dinner Mother made for you. I know Jule & Aunt Dootz will be glad to see Marvin & his wedding.

I’m going to send back most of the pictures and just keep most of the one’s of you all and also I’ll give George’s to him.

The one’s of me are mighty funny looking and pretty sloppy to be a soldier. Thanks a lot for sending them to me.

I went to the dentist today. They let you go to the dentist if you are about well & are just waiting around. You can walk in a hallway right to the dentist. He filled two cavities. And I ask him what I should have plates or bridges and he said he wouldn’t do anything now but just leave them along [alone?]. They weren’t bothering me but I just thought it was a good time to check my teeth and ask about.

The sergant came by & let me sign the payroll so I get paid on the 1st of the month. I thought for a while I might have to wait. However, I have plenty of money.

George either lost or someone stole from him a $20 bill last week. Tell Eugenia thanks a lot for the cookies and that I enjoyed them a lots. Tell Red hello! for me.

With lots of love,Your son,Joe

(Stationary: U.S. Naval Air Station Jacksonville)Friday night

Dearest Mother and Daddy -This is the first chance to write since I've been back, as I had to get checked in

Wednesday night and I had a watch last night. I've gotten settled down again and back to work, but I still keep thinking of how nice it was to at home and to really rest and enjoy eating and sleeping again; the week was just to (sic) short. I know the rest and change did me lots of good though because I sure feel lots better than when I left and my grades in the Link trainer are a whole lots better - I'm a little behind, but nearly as much as I had expected - seems like just about everyone in my class who hasn't already had a leave is getting on or trying to - Tom Kerr and Jake Parker both got a week's leave and Crenshaw is going to try and get one. It has been cool and rainy down here since I've been back so that helps you feel better.

Mother, Mit and I both sure enjoyed your good meals and I know we both gained - it has been a long time since I've eaten so much. Mit's Mother made us eat just like you

Page 5: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

did, and so all in all we really stuffed. All we did in Kissimmee was to sleep and eat - we went up to Orlando one day and looked at some china - trying to pick out our pattern - one that would really look nice with our silver pattern and that we would never tire of - I think we've about decide on one but I can't remember the name of it. Mit is busy helping Sister get ready for school, and then she is going to start getting ready for our wedding - I'm afraid most of the planning and work will be up to her as I won't be able to help so much. We talked just a bit about everything this week which was one of the reasons I wanted the leave - we have definitely made up our minds about our marriage and our engagement. I feel like God will see me through this, which, after all, is really all both of us are asking for now - so I feel that we have the right to plan our life just as near to what it would have been had not the war started. Maybe you all don't know how long we have seriously planned on getting married - it was almost from the very first and it has always been the one thing we have looked forward to and worked for. If I could possibly tell you all what Mit does mean to me maybe you could understand better how I feel, but I can't seem to do that. All I can say is that I do love her so much more every day that goes by that for her I have tried harder to be the person I think I should be than I ever dreamed I could - I have been happier than I ever was before and I know now that that I can do what I want to do. Things might not be any too good after this war, but whatever we have to face I know that Mit and I can face and I want us to do it together. We will make mistakes I'm sure because I have a lot to learn, but I want it that way. I just want you all to never have any doubts about how I feel about Mit - she's so much a part of me now that her life is my life - I'm happy and contented with her you all - all I want is to just be with her forever. Don't feel like we don't want you all to talk to us and give us advice because both of us do, but if I go ahead and make mistakes anyway you know you've done all you could and some people are hard headed and have to learn the hard way; sometimes its hard to see things if you haven't really experienced them yourself. Anyway Mit and I are going into our life together after having done our best to consider everything and talk everything out - I guess that's what I miss most down here - not being able to talk things over with Mit every day.

We've decided to announce our engagement the 20th of this month, or the following week if its not possible to get the announcements into the papers in time for the 20th. We wrote out a copy together before I left (except I didn't know Daddy's Mother's and Daddy's names and grandmother's maiden name and your Daddy's - at least I wasn't sure of them when I started thinking about them). Mother would you take the copy down to the papers (Journal and Constitution), along with Mit's picture, for us - Mit will send them to you in a few days - you can fill in the names right if we have them wrong. Maybe you and Aunt Dootz can check it over and see if we have it right for the Atlanta papers - in Atlanta the announcements are a little different - ask Aunt Dootz if she would mind doing this for us and also if she would mind going with you so as to be sure the papers put the announcement and picture on a good page - I thought that after Marvin's marriage she would know about all that. Mother I hope we won't put too much off on you, but we sorta have to for this - Mit will write you a letter when she mails the copy and picture, and if they already have the best page filled or there isn't enough time to get it in there let me know & Mit too, and we will just make it the following Sunday. We've been waiting for such a long time to tell everyone we are engaged that I know it will make us both happier.

Page 6: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

I want to get Mit's ring before we announce our engagement if I can - I will have $75 dollars saved up by the 15th and I wondered if it would make it too hard on Daddy if he would lend me twenty dollars - I would then have enough to pay 1/3 down on the ring and could give it to Mit before the 20th. I've though (sic) about it all since we talked about it and I want to do it this way - I can pay Daddy back on the first of October and if he doesn't mind and can spare $20 till then I'll be fixed. This letter is to both of you all Daddy, even though it sounds that I'm just writing to one of you all. I would lots rather that you didn't pay me the $100 now Daddy - I would rather have it as a starter for our savings account when Mit and I are married and then too I want to get Mit's ring now. I can handle it all right as I will have 10 months to pay the balance. This means more to both of us than telephone calls and spending money on week-ends so we're going to cut that out from now on - I have saved a good deal of money this summer, though I spend (sic) a good deal on train fare and other things on my leave. Daddy, if it would be a strain to send me $20 please don't do it - I would rather wait longer than have that because I know how many bills have to be paid - if you can do it I can pay you back on the 1st. Hope you all will understand how I feel about this.

I will finish my Link training course Monday - I've made lots better marks since I've been back - and Tuesday I will start blind flying (under a common hood with an instructor in the front cock-pit) in SNJ's, so I should be through this squadron before the end of week after this coming week and ready to move out to Lee Field - I'll let you know my new address as soon as I move. It has been raining here every afternoon which has made it nice and cool at night, but I hope that it doesn't keep up because it stops flying. When I get out at Lee Field and started in Squadron 16 I will then begin to feel that I'm on the home stretch. Then I will be able to tell just about when I should get my commission. I'm still feeling extra good and I really have a better appetite so I'm darn glad that I took my leave.

There's not much news to write, so I'll close. Mit will write to you in a few days Mother and I'll call you all some night next week.

Lots of love,Bobby

P.S. Did Joe get to come home - I sure hope he can.

Dearest Mother and Daddy -Well I've moved out to Lee Field at last - I moved out Friday afternoon, so now II

feel like I'm on the home stretch at last. Its pretty nice here, but its really away from everything - hard to get in town and back, etc. but I think I will like it fine. My new address is:Bldg. 29 Room 138Lee FieldU.S. Naval Air StationJacksonville, Fla.

I went down to see Mit this week-end and we had such a good time. I gave her a ring and it is really beautiful. We were both so excited about being formally engaged , as you might say - we’ve waited a long time for that day and it really seemed nice. The letter you wrote Mit was so sweet Mother and she appreciated it so much. I'm anxious to see the Atlanta papers when they come out - will you send us both a copy of each paper? I appreciate you having put in for us and for what Jule did too. About your list of people to send invitations too (sic) -- will you try and put down all the relatives and also all the boys and girls that you can think of - I won't have time to do very much down here, and I hate to put it off on you, but during odd moments maybe you could gradually add to the list. I want to send an invitation to everyone I know as well as all the kin people. We can check over the list several times - I know it’s a good ways off, but I would like to get that ready early.

I want to write to Jule and thank her Mother and also to Aunt Isa for the graduation present she sent me - so when you write will you send me their addresses and also the correct way to spell Aunt Isa's name.

This is only a short letter Mother, but I want to go to bed early tonight, and I will write a longer letter later this week. I hope you all are feeling good - guess Eugenia is all excited over rush week. You all take good care of yourselves.

Lots of love,Bobby

September 29, 1942Dear Jule -

I want to thank you for getting such a nice space in the Atlanta papers for our engagement announcement - it was so very sweet of you and Mit and I both sure appreciate it. I saw Mit this week-end and she told me that you had written to her such a sweet letter and she was going to answer it right away. You and Aunt Dootz have both been so sweet to both of us and I want you both to always know how much we appreciate it.

I know you all had a good time in California - getting to see Marvin and to meet Sally and being there for their wedding. I know that Marvin is happy. It will still be about two months I imagine before Mit and I can get married because I have to get my commission first. I got carrier duty - which means I'll either fly fighters, dive bombers, or torpedo bombers, but it takes about three to four weeks longer to finish your advance training for this type duty than it does for the other types.

Mit and I were both so excited about our engagement that we haven't gotten over it yet - it seems like we've waited so long for it. I've been mighty lucky being so close Mit and getting to see her almost every week-end; I'm just hoping that I won't be sent right out to sea after I get my commission. I'm at Lee Field now, which is the new carrier squadron training base for this area; its about thirty miles south of Jax and its really out in the woods, but it could be lots worse I guess.

Well the war won't last forever, and I'll be glad when its over - when I get back tto Atlanta I'll be content to stay there forever - I didn't know I could miss it so much. I hope that you and Aunt Dootz will be able to come down for the wedding, Jule - we want you both to come down for it so much. This is only a short, messy letter, but you don't have much time at night down here before taps. I'll write you and Aunt Dootz a longer letter soon though.

I hope you all are well and that everything in Atlanta is all right. Thank you again, Jule, for all you've done for us.

Lots of love,BobbyWednesday night

Dear Jule,There must be such a thing as mental telepathy - Sunday when Bobby was here

we talked about writing to you then yesterday I received your letter. You were sweet to write to me. I didn't realize before that being engaged would

cause so many nice things to happen. For a week I've been too excited to even act natural.

Mrs. Neel wrote me that you were going to take our announcement and pictures to the paper. Thank you so much, I hope it didn't cause you too much trouble.

Bobby and I are having so much fun planning our wedding. Of course our plans are still very indefinite because Bobby doesn't know exactly when he will get his commission. We hope our wedding will be the last week in October.

I do hope that you and your Mother will be here for our wedding. Mother and I would be so happy if you could come.

Sally and Marvin's wedding must have been lovely. I know you enjoyed being there.

Bobby thinks so much of you, your mother and Marvin - Of course Sally must be just right too. I enjoyed being with you and your mother even for just the few minutes that we were together. I am looking forward to really knowing you better. It's going to be so nice being a part of the Neel family.

My best regards to your mother, I hope she is feeling well.Sincerely,Mildred

Dearest Mother & Daddy,I got the letter "Red" sent me today and also the one Daddy sent. They were both

air mail but "Reds" was 4 days late. I think the mail room holds the mail before we get it and sometimes you don't get them on time. Jule's letter was also a week getting here, even though it was mailed air mail. She gave me Marvin's address & told me how I would phone him. She wanted me to surprise him but he called me up first. He called Sunday night but I was on guard detail and Monday night I had study hall. I am to have dinner with he and his wife Tuesday night.

I had guard Sunday night from 9 until 11 and 3 until 5. On the last shift we had a little snow but it didn't stick. I was corporal of the guard. The corporal of the guard is not selected but it just depends on how your name is on the ?.

Daddy I have received the $20 and I really do appreciate you lending it to me. We will be paid by the 15th and I will send they money back.

I feel sure that one pair of long underwear will be plenty. No use in getting any more because I will only be here until the 25th of December & so far it hasn't been cold.

We won't get inside of the Boeing plant but we are working on the new planes (or soon will be) They used to send the boys through the plants but it caused to much delay. 40% of workers are girls.

I will probably be sent to some field when I graduate. Where I will receive practical training & be assigned to a B-17.

Hope you all have a nice trip to Kissimore and I wish I could be there too.If I don't answer letters sooner it will be because they are delayed by the mail

room. They have a poor set up for sorting mail or are just lazy.Tell Eugenia, Red & Bobby hello! for me.Mother, I dropped Aunt Lila a post-card with a picture of one of the forest of

large trees out here. Thanks a lots for the warm underwear, sweater, and socks. They haven't come yet but I will get them soon.

Hope you all have received all of my letters. I have sent one a day or just about that. I think I have received most of you all's on time except the one from Red. And one from Daddy that was sent to Keesler first & then transferred up here.

We go to school from 8:30 to 4:30 now, just 1/2 hour later. With lots of love,Your Son,Joe

December 11, 1942Dearest Mother & Daddy,

I am getting along OK and feel well. I am going to have dinner with Marvin and his wife on this coming Sunday.

After Mon I will have two more weeks at the Boeing School. I like this school much better than I did AM School. One of my instructors used to live in Alaska before the war. He worked as a manager of a trading post radio & weather man & for a flying transport line. Another was a flyer for the Navy. Many of them worked in the Boeing Plant before being transferred to school. They are all civilians.

Today for the first time I saw Mount Ranier. It is about 80 or 90 miles away and can only be seen a few days in the 28 days we are here. I really would like to climb it but we don't have enough time to climb it.

We will probably get paid the 15th of the month.I just did a little washing. We have a washing machine that runs for 15 minutes

on 5 cents.I bought some cheap but fairly good looking Christmas cards. I sent one to the

Watkins, Aunt Lila & Marian, Aunt Doots & Jule, Chris ? & Mon Knox, & will send one to the Blackfords & to Marvin.

We are having some trouble in getting our mail on time & some boys haven't received any letters while they have been here. So if I don't answer letters you will know I haven't received them yet.

With lots of love,Your Son,Joe

Dearest Mother & Daddy,I received the swell socks and sweater and I have them on now. Mother it was

mighty nice of you to send them to me and I really do thank you.Marvin called me Sunday and I went over to the Blackfords for supper Tuesday

night. Sally Bruce and Dr. and Mrs. Blackfords were there. I liked them all a lots and though Marvin's wife was might pretty. Marvin and Sally Bruce have both just gotten over the flu. We had a swell turkey dinner with all the extries. I got a letter from Jule telling me there phone number but it was delayed in getting here so I didn't get to call and surprise Marvin like Jule told me to do. Marvin looks good in his Naval uniform, I hadn't seen him in a long time you know. The Blkackfords asked me to Christmas dinner if I am still in Seattle and can get out.

Sunday Sally Bruce asked me to eat dinner with them out at Marvin's home. I am getting along OK and heard from a boy who is an OCS candidate that mine and his SCS paper had been transferred up from Keesler. This doesn't mean I am called but that they have been transferred to where I am. They are supposed to follow you where ever you go.

Hope everyone is well and that if you go to Kimmee you have a nice trip.Tell Eugenia that I got her last letter and thanks.Mother, I believe I have waited to (sic) long to get my Christmas shopping done,

because the stores are only open Monday nights and I had study hall last Monday. Also packages take so long and are easily broken during the rush.

I received Mother's letter written Tuesday on Saturday and Daddy's letter written on the 7th today. I have received the $25 and I really do appreciate it. We get paid Tuesday and I can repay the money you all have let me have to hold me to pay day.

I went out to Marvin's apartment to eat dinner but he had been held over at the ship so Sally Bruce and her girl friend and I went over to the Blackfords to eat dinner. Marvin came in later and Marvin and I, and Sally Bruce went back to their apartment to eat supper. Marvin's wife really is a good cook. They had grits in my honor. I really had a good time with them.

I am getting along O.K. in school. I bough me a pair of dress shoes and the socks and sweater have arrived. Mother I really appreciate you sending me the box of eats. They haven't come yet but I know they will be good. I have also received my glasses.

I will try and get more pictures of myself and send you all before I leave Seattle but I doubt if I can get them home by the 25th.

I know you all have a good time at the wedding and I wish I could have been there. I didn't send a telegram because as you all & Bobby said it wasn't definite plans could be changed by the Navy. I am going to write Bobby & Mildred a long letter this week and congratulate them & Bobby for getting his wings.

I got a letter from Harland today. Hope everyone is well & feeling good. With lots of love,Your Son,Joe

P.S. Tell Aunt Dootz that Marvin is well & looking good & that his wife really is a good cook.

Saturday MorningDearest Mother & Daddy,

Well we leave this afternoon & we are all going to the same place and I'm pretty sure it will be Salt Lake City.

I ate dinner with the Blackfords and I really had a good time. The Blackfords and Marvin, Sally Bruce, Aunt Dootz, & Jule had presents for me! I got a dog tag chain, 2 books (pocket), shine cloth and writing paper. Robert Neel was there too. I didn't give any presents but I sent cards. You all said something about sending the Blackfords pecans but they have them out here. I'll be sure and write and thank Aunt Dootz & Jule, Marvin, Sally Bruce and Blackfords.

I really had a good time in Seattle.Mother I really did enjoy the box of food you sent me. It was all in good

condition when I received it and it sure was good. I didn't open until Christmas morning. Thanks for the money in the boot too. I got a card from the Haydens (?) the other day.

Hope you all had a nice Christmas. I probably won't get my mail that you all sent me in the last few days. We didn't have mail call Christmas and it will take a time to catch up with me.

I'll send a day letter when I leave and when I get there. The shoes that I bought with my Christmas money are fine and fit good.Did Red get a dog for Christmas. Marvin and the Blackfords told me to tell you

all hello!

December 20, 1942Dearest Mother & Daddy,

I'm feeling OK and getting along alright. I ate dinner with Sally Bruce, Marvin, and Robert Neel. We went out and cut two Christmas trees and then went over to the Blackfords and had supper and left one of the trees. I had a good time and enjoyed seeing Robert again.

We will have the 25th off & I'm to eat Christmas dinner with the Blackfords.Sorry I didn't get a letter off during the week end but I didn't get time to.I thought about calling home for Christmas but decided that I would have more

news if I waited until I had shipped. I couldn't get any further away and it won't cost any more if I phone from my new camp.

We will get our mail for the week-end tonight so I'll answer the letters I get in Tuesday's letter.

Hope everyone is well and feeling good for Christmas. I haven't open (sic) my Christmas package yet.

Dearest Mother & Daddy,I received your telegram this morning. Glad you are writing me. I got the 1st

mail yesterday. One letter written by Mother was mailed on the 4 and I received it on the 5th. I think I have some letters written in between that I ought to get pretty soon.

Sorry to hear that Mother had a sick headache before Christmas & hope she was well before Christmas.

You all are might smart to get up all that junk and papers. But don't work too hard.

I didn't get to seen (sic) Marvins boat but he showed me some that were like it.I will inquire if my OCS papers are still following me as soon as I think they have

had time to arrive. If by chance I were called my C.O. wouldn't have anything to do with but he could keep me from getting it if I had been earning trouble or misbehaving etc. I will be surprised if I am ever called but will keep trying and asking about it.

I'm not kicking or feeling sorry for myself but I doubt if I ever will be anything but a Private. Although I'm already trying. I guess the Private has the best time any way.

Glad to hear to hear that Bobby and Mildred are both well.I don't need any clothes because I have plenty to keep warm. Mother I wear that

sleeveless sweater under my cover-alls and over my undershirt. It is such a nice sweater that I hate to wear it that way but it is about the only chance I have to wear it.

Jan 11thDearest Mother & Daddy,

I received the letter from Mother written on January 11th. Also the Ga. Alumni Record. Thanks a lots for sending me the air mail stamps.

Mother please don't worry about me being shipped out of the United States because if I ever am it will be a long time off. When I get to my new base I really hope you all can get to see me.

I have already written Marvin & Sally Bruce and Dr. & Mrs. Blackford thanking them for being so nice to me. There isn't anything that I can think of that I need now.

I had the buttons on my overcoat moved so that it fits better and also had the sleaves (sic) shortened. I also turned in a pair of shoes that were worn out and got a new pair for them.

There are two types of cloth used in Army pants and I have the type that isn't so good looking. It is the same as that used in World War I. I am either going to swap mine in or buy a pair of the better looking pants.

The boys in my barracks are partly from the South, North, and West. Lots of the boys that I have been to school with are in my group. The barrack leader is a Staff Sarg. He has been in the army for 3 years and has been on the line.

I had today off because I went on guard last night. I am well and getting along O.K. We took a physical exam today & I passed O.K.

I received Daddy's letters of the 31st & the 1st & Mother's letter of the 2nd. I also received the pictures and thought they were very good. I wish Mother had been in the picture though. I am returning them because I don't want them ruined.

Daddy, I hope my letters haven't sounded resentful or kicking (?) about hard luck. I would of course like to get a chance to go to OCS but I'm not feeling resentful or anything like that. I am doing my best like I have since I have been in the Army & I am trying to be as good a private as I can and still have fun.

My application is at Headquarters now and they will act on it the lieutenant said.Tonight just before sunset another fellow from Alabama and I walked out in back

of the barracks in to the prairie or desert. There is a lot of dry grass & cactus, & small bushes. We saw a dead coyote and a dead cottontail rabbit. There are also a lot of prairie dog holes. They are built up from the ground to keep the rain out. Some of them are fairly big. The sunset was really beautiful.

Daddy write me all about your visit with Bobby & Mildred. Tell me what there (sic) plans are, etc.

The dust storms aren't very bad, it blows for a while & then stops.I think we are among the 1st here. The field was open about Jan 5th. No one

trained here has gone overseas yet. One group went to Colorado from here. There is very little farming around here but mostly cattle ranges. So far I haven't had any pictures made or have I had much of a chance. I'll try

hard to get some in the next two weeks.Sorry I missed Daddy but will call again when he is home.Mother I have been getting all of your letters but don't remember whether I got all

that was written on the 28th or not. But I think I did.Mother, the tools were O.K. and I really do appreciate them. Will be looking forward for the cookies. My hoarseness is much better today, and I am taking care of myself.

February 5thFriday

Dearest Mother & Daddy,I received Mother's letter of the 3rd and Eugenia's letter of the 2nd. Thanks a lot

Mother for sending me the dollar. We didn't do very much all day but wait out on the ramp for our plane to come in.

It was grounded in El Paso but finally got back to Pyote around 5 o'clock. We pulled a 25 hour inspection on the plane which took us until after ?. We finished in time to eat and before dark though. Nothing was wrong except a nut I found missing on my engine.

The line is something like this. Two rows of planes (about 50) are all in a line on a concret rampart. There is a row of tents in front of the planes. Each Squadron has about 3 tents. One is heated with a wooden stove and is the standby tent. The others are for supply, and paints (?) Across from the ramps in back of the planes is a strip of unpaved ground and there the long run way. There are buildings in back of the tents. These are Squadron offices, supply, etc. We live in barracks in back of the Squadron office.

The planes are refueled by a large truck, one for oil & one for gasoline.

Enclosed with these letters:Tuesday 9th

Dear Rob,I enjoyed talking with you all Saturday night. Before receiving your route sheet dated 6th I sent some mail to Francis-Marion

Hotel, letters from Joe, also bank notice of a deposit to your credit. We are well, and miss you very much. Hope traveling conditions haven't been

too trying. I understand Charleston is certainly over-crowded.Dootz says Marvin had orders to go to Seattle last week, so he is now on his way

there. His wife has a brother stationed in Alaska also.I haven't heard from Eugenia this week, but suppose she is well.I enjoyed Joe's description of the live, etc. also his view of the desert sunset.

Bless his heart! He found the missing bolt or nut on his engine. I wrote him and congratulated him on his noticing it, and told him that one little missing screw or bolt could cause trouble sooner or later for the plane. He seems proud of the little tools I sent him. A lady in a hardware store said she had to send some tools to a friend also, somewhere in a northern camp. She said the boy wrote that it was nice to have a few tools of his own, so maybe a lot of the fellows do like to own a few. At first, I thought perhaps the soldiers were required to get them, which I did not approve of, and then I knew how conscientious Joe is, and I knew he would worry when the tools didn't go around to all. From what he wrote about time going fast while he worked on the plane, I'm glad I was able to find them so he can be working too when the planes come in to be checked, & not have to stand around & look at others fooling with it.

Dearest Daddy & Mother,I am O.K. and feeling well. I received Mother’s letter of the 6th and

Daddy’s letter of the 7th. Mother I will enjoy seeing the news papers and also if you have the old Times & Reader’s Digest I could use them, because we can’t buy either one on the port or in town.

Glad Daddy got to see Bobby and Mildred & that they are well and getting along O.K. Daddy’s letter was especially interesting. Did Bobby know the boys whose plane crashed into the sea?

I weigh about 190 now. I seem to stay around that figure. Sometimes I loose a few pounds but soon gain them back. I started to write Daddy at the George Washington because I remember that was where we stayed but I didn’t know whether the Army or Navy had taken it over.

I received a letter from Sally Bruce. She said that Marvin & she had just gotten back from a trip to Townsend and that they had had 8 inches of snow in Seattle which completely paralyzed Seattle for a week and closed the ship yards & Boeings. She said Marvin leaves for Alaska within the week.

I am on guard duty tonight and Friday & Saturday I have my two days of K.P.

The way people talk, I think we might go to another field around the 1st of March.

My work is interesting but there isn’t so much to tell about it. I haven’t been up yet but if I can catch a plane without a full combat crew I can go up. I don’t know whether we will get any gunnery but I hope so. I was talking to a gunner out in the plane & I found out how to load and operate one anyway. I believe I could shoot one if I had the chance. I don’t know what field we might go to for training. It is pretty dusty & windy at times & they have issued us dusty respirators. They fit over your mouth & nose & filter the dust.

With Lots of Love,Your Son,Joe

We have thought of you so often the last few weeks. And I just want you to know that your family is simply wonderful. You would be so proud of their wonderful spirit and their thoughtfulness of each other. Red is just a whiz. She thinks nothing of baking a delicious cake, doing the marketing and is always busy with something. And she is growing. You'd really be proud of the way she has taken hold of things, and does them well too.

Eugenia has been so faithful to her job. And so often, I hear such lovely things about how sweet and pretty she is.

Uncle Bob and Aunt Louise are so sweet and fine, you need never worry about them at all. Mother is pretty lonely herself, so after the girls go back to school, I guess she and Aunt Louise will keep each other company.

Mit is certainly an asset to the family, and we all do love her so devotedly. I could write volumes about her, and hope she will come back up here soon.

I wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so many friends. Jack Gantt's mother (he was SPM) said Jack's little crowd just adored Joe. And the Reynolds Herbert and Zohner's parents, came down here, and they said so many nice things about both you and Joe. I'm so proud to have been his cousin. And I pray that those of us at home may so live in God's way that our world will be a more perfect place. Joe is an inspiration to me. And I know he is to dozens of other people.

Bill Crowl (?) is in Atlanta on his way to a carrier in the Pacific as medical officer.Marvin is now a Papa, but he doesn't know it yet. Marvin the third arrived at 4:30

at 4318 55th Ave., NE and her father owns the Virginia Mason Hospital there. So keep them in your address book.

They were all so fond of Joe and enjoyed knowing him out there so much. Marvin is still in command of his YMS 27 and is still a Lt.As time goes by I'll drop you a line again and tell you how things are at home.

With you and Marvin out there, the war will be won soon, 'cause you both have what it takes.

Sunday afternoonAug 15.

My dear Bobby,I have thought of you so often and wished that I could help you in some way to

bear the sorrow of losing such a wonderful brother. Some day tho I truly believe we will be reunited with those we love who have already started their new life ahead of us. That does not lessen the sadness of giving them up in this life tho. I know from experience the greatest comfort we get is in trying to do the things that we know would please the one who has left us. There are lots of things too that mean so much to the whole family.

Page 22: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

Everyone seems to have been Joe's friend with whom he had any close contacts. Robert Neel in Ft. Lewis said he was the finest person he ever knew.

We had a wire today from Seattle saying that young Marvin III has arrived and all is well except that his father could not be there to welcome him. Marvin is still in Alentrano at same place.

Bill Crowe is being sent somewhere in the Pacific. Hope he will be near you.We had dinner at your house last night and was so glad to see them have more

appetite and we enjoyed the Birthday cake Elizabeth baked for Bob. He was so pleased. It is so hard to be reconciled I know & they had two large framed pictures of Joe in the room so that it seems he is right there. They are such wonderful pictures.

We looked at your wedding pictures and thought they were real good. We are all so crazy about Mildred and are looking forward to knowing her better. Her visit up here meant so much to your family. Elizabeth is developing into a good cook and is so smart about the house and she is quite a pretty girl too. Eugenia is wonderful looking and I know will make a name for herself. She has worked a lot at the Red Cross and so many ladies have spoken to Juliet about Eugenia's beauty and capability. Walton, Jr. is in Miami at the Officer's training Camp, Bill Neel is still in England and is alright so far. He is trying to find out something of Joe's death. I do hope he can & I am sure he will do everything possible. It is terribly hot here and an occasional shower cools off things a little.

I'm going up to Cartersville for a little visit soon & hope to get in that cool lake at Syl's & get cooled off once more. Everyone up there is canning & there are lots of vegetables, watermelons & cantalopes (sic) as well as fried chicken. They are having a tough time getting the mines and crops worked for almost no labor is to be found & those on farms have a lot to do these days. Jimi Neel gets home today from the Great Lakes Training school & will be at home ten days before being sent some where else. I want to hear from you sometime when you aren't too busy and I do want to keep up with you so I'll try to write you once in a while.

Please take care of yourself and come back when it is over for you mean a lot to your people.

With love and many good wishes.Aunt Ella

Dearest Bobby,We had a letter from Mildred today. She said they're having such a nice time at

see if Gus is coming to Atlanta - she said he'll be here next Sunday and she's going to tell him to call Mother or come by to see us. We're anxious to see him.

I guess Daddy told you about Marvin III - he arrived yesterday morning. Aunt Dootz called us as soon as she heard the news and told Daddy she was a grandmother. She really is thrilled about it. I've got to hurry and knit that sweater before he gets too big for it.

Elizabeth baked a chocolate cake and fixed a special dinner Saturday for Daddy's birthday and invited Aunt Dootz and Aunt Ella and Jule and Marguerite for dinner. I gave him a box of candy.

I bought 3 records today and they're so pretty. One is "To a Wild Rose" by Andre Kostelanetz's orchestra, one the "Emperor Waltz" and the other is "Afternoon of a Faun".

Every night Bunch barks at the shadows the moon makes in the yard. He had a bad dream the other night - so Mother said because he was making queer noises - and then he woke up and barked at something imaginary for about an hour.

I finished Elizabeth's sweater -- hope it fits her. We're all feeling all right. Glad that you are too. Take care of yourself.

Lots of love,Eugenia

Friday, Aug 20thDearest Bobby,

We all were so happy to hear from you. I'm late answering your letter again.Gus Sparks arrived here Wednesday, so he and Betty Haverty came over last

night and Gus was certainly nice to give us all the news, etc. He said you looked well, that you had a short hair cut that looked good & he thought you had gained too. He said your bunch of fellows were certainly outstanding compared with other squadrons they had been with. This all made us feel glad. I have just written Mildred about seeing Gus and all details. I sent it air-mail so she should know all we do by tomorrow.

Mildred was kind and sweet to invite us down to the beach. We thought we had better not go this time. It is near time to get the girls ready for school, and then Eugenia works at Richs'. It is good training for her, you know. I'm so glad that Mildred and her family are having a nice time at Daytona.

Gus is here for twenty-five days.Marvin and Sally-Bruce have a son, born Aug. 15th, whom they have named

Marvin III. Aunt Dootz is so happy over being a grand-mother. Sally-Bruce wrote that she hoped the baby would "grow to his nose", it has a big nose.

Frank Fleming wrote that he found out our darling Joe is buried at Brookwood, a place about twenty-eight miles from London, a little southwest of London, and not so far from Oxford. He wrote his mother that he was going down to Joe's base last week to try to find out something for us. Bill Neel wrote he would also do everything he could to get there and get details.

I have gotten a lovely picture made for you and Mildred, a copy of the ones Joe had made while he was on his furlough in April. It is a large picture. I will send it on to Mildred.

Are there any good photographers out there where you could have a picture made with your overseas cap & uniform?

We had a nice letter from Mark Moore. He has been out since March. Said he hoped he could get home by the New Year anyway. Daddy sent you his address. He asked us to send it to you.

It is nice and cool here the past few days, about like fall.Daddy will go up to Knoxville for a week on Monday. He keeps busy here with

grass cutting and weed pulling. We are all feeling well. I think Daddy is glad to see cool weather coming.

Frank Fleming has been made a Sergeant now. He looks very happy and well in the pictures he sends home. Miss Hightower & Mrs. Fleming have certainly been lovely and sympathetic too. They sent over a lovely box of mints to Daddy for his birthday on Aug. 12th.

Please be careful now, just as though you were only beginning to fly. Don't feel too sure or over confident ever. Take care of your health, and listen carefully to the older flyers advice.

We all were so glad to talk over things with Gus.Don't worry about us, we are all well and try to keep busy at something. Lots of

love, hugs and kisses.Devotedly,Mother

you more than anything else. By this time you have no doubt received letters from us telling you that Gus had called to see us. We certainly were glad to get all the news etc. from him. I wrote to Mildred right after his visit and told her everything.

I enclose a copy of letter we got Tuesday from the pilot of the "Carolyn." I was really surprised to get the information he gives since there are so many rules. However, if my precious sweet Joe had to go, I am thankful that his death was instant, and that God was merciful in not letting him suffer long. Sooner or later, we will hear all the details from some one coming back to the states. The very day this letter from Lt. Withers came, a Mrs Lee, who lives on La France Street here, called me and told me

Page 25: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

that her son wrote her he was in Joe's same group and that Joe was a good friend of his. Said he could write no details, but that if he comes back he can tell us the whole story. I am going over to talk with Mrs Lee. Her son is a Sgt. in the ground forces and was at all the bases over here with Joe. Frank Fleming wrote us that he found out Joe was buried at Brookwood, about twenty-eight miles from London. I'm going to send money to the Red Cross and ask them, or else the Salvation Army, to put flowers on his grave for me. Frank wrote his parents he was going to try to go to Joe's grave last week. I'll let you know if he did get to go. I also had a nice letter from George McGrudger. Said no matter how Joe went he knew he went bravely, as that was Joe.

Bobby we are all trying our best to act in just the same way Joe would act if any of us had been taken. I know he would do everything exactly as he thought we would want them done, and he would have done all he could to help the others to be brave and bear their sorrow. So that is what we all are trying to do, just be brave for each other's sake, and in honor to our brave sweet Joe. I know he was brave in all his trials, and never gave up. We will all have to live up to his example.

Daddy has been in Knoxville several days, but will come home tonight. We drove up to Uncle Syl's lake Wednesday night. It was Aunt Ella's birthday.

Aunt Dootz & Jule went with us. Everyone ask about you. They had a good picnic dinner, and sent some back for Daddy.

I'm so glad you had such a delicious dinner. It certainly sounded wonderful.Bobby, we are all well. Elizabeth has gained quite a little this summer. Now

don't worry about us, because we can see after each other and call the doctor the minute any one gets sick. You will have to take care of yourself though.

The straw coasters are just the very thing I have thought several times of buying for myself. They are just lovely, and so useful. You were sweet to send them to me, and I appreciate them more than I can express to you. How did you guess I wanted some?

I wrote Mildred several weeks ago to come on up to Georgia any time she wanted to. I'll write and remind her again that the "latch-string" is always waiting for "her pull." I know her Mother and sister have been so happy to have her with them. I am glad they are enjoying the beach. She sent Eugenia a cute little perfume bottle & Elizabeth a little Panda pen to wear on her sweater or lapel. They were both pleased, and it was sweet of Mildred to send them.

The "old Marine" at Windell-Roberts soda fount ask (sic) Elizabeth about you today. Uncle Joe, in Macon has also asked about you in his letter to us.

It has been terribly hot here the past five or six days. It always did get hot just before school opened. I saw where Douglas Winfree was here on a furlough. He is at some camp in Ohio.

Aunt Dootz certainly is thrilled over her grand-son. Sally-Bruce sent her a little lock of the baby's hair. Know Marvin wishes he could get just one peep at him.

Bobby, I want you to know that we all want Mildred to come as often as she can to see us, because this is her home too, and there's always a welcome awaiting her. Also there's room for her mother anytime she can come with Mildred. Eugenia is working at Rich's today. Elizabeth goes on a picnic with the Junior Red Cross tomorrow at N. Fulton Park.

We had such a nice letter from Mark Moore. Said how much he remembered you and his J'ville friendship.

Lt. Bill Neel (Uncle Poly's son) flies an Army fighter in England. He is going to do all he can to go to Joe's base and get details. He wanted to know all about you. He married a girl from Americus.

Remember, you ground crew keeps your plain (sic) in good shape.

Page 26: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

I am thinking of you all the time Bobby. Thinking how happy we'll all be when you are back home again. We'll all have many things to talk about and tell each other. Please always be just as careful as you were in your first solo. It makes me so thankful to hear you have been well. Please don't fly if you have one of those bad head colds like you used to have, because you can't think clear. Lots & lots of love, hugs & kisses.

Devotedly,Mother

I'll write next on V mail.

(Enclosed is this typewritten note)EnglandAugust 18, 1943

Dear Mr. Neel,I'm certain that you have received letters from others in the group by now. I

cannot tell you anything that has not been written, but I wanted to write anyway. As your son wrote, he had met all of my crew, and we had been working together

for some time. All of us liked him a great deal. He was an excellent mechanic and crew member as well as being a good man with which to work. Several times he rode with me on practice flights and liked flying very much.

Your son was killed in an explosion. That is all I am allowed to tell you, except that his death was instant. He was not in the hospital. He left no last message for you that I know of. I am keeping your address. If I return to the States, I will be able to tell you the whole story. My address in the United States is:

Robert L. Withers 1st Lt. Box 204, Fort Davis, TexasI am sorry that I cannot give you the exact location of the cemetery where Joe is

buried. Also I am unable to locate the Sergeant you mentioned in your letter. Lt. Neel has not as yet contacted me.

Sir, believe me, if I could tell you more, I would do so. After the war, I hope to see you and Joe's mother. Your loss was mine, too. That is about all I can say.

Sincerely,Robert L. Withers

Dearest Bobby,Mother said to tell you that she is going to write to you tomorrow on V-mail. We

received your long letter yesterday and we all enjoyed it so much. I don't see when you

Page 27: walden.saf.comwalden.saf.com/pictures/mcclatchey/genealogy/neel/McClatchey_…  · Web viewI wish you could have heard all the lovely things friends have said about Joe. He had so

found time to write such a long one. Elizabeth and I also had a package from Mildred. She sent me a darling little perfume bottle and Eliz a cute pin. It was so sweet of her to do that. I wrote her a letter last night.

Mother likes her coasters so much. It was sweet of you to send them.Daddy came home last night from Knoxville.I guess Mother wrote you about the picnic at Uncle Sil's lake. Daddy had some

important business in Knoxville and so he couldn't be there. I wish he could have because he would have enjoyed it so much. It was a surprise birthday party for Aunt Ella. She didn't even know it until everyone sang "Happy Birthday" and gave her their presents. She was so overcome - with pleasure - that she couldn't say anything. Nineteen were there in all -- Aunt Dootz, Jule, Aunt Ella, Marguerite, Uncle Fred, Aunt Vance, Julia Vance, Aunt Isa and Uncle Ralph, Mary Ann and Julia, Neel Hammond, Uncle Sil and Aunt Sarah, Billy and Holmes, and Mother, Eliz and I. Everyone brought something for the picnic supper and I've never seen such a big one. You should have been there to help us eat it. Jule and I are planning another party like it for Mildred and Sally-Bruce when they come to Atlanta to live.

I had a good time swimming in the lake before supper and rowing around in Holmes' kyak (sic).

Thursday night, the night after the picnic, we went over to Aunt Dootz's and pooled what we had left from it - it was almost as big as the first one.

I'm still working at Rich's, but I'm going to stop in about 8 days.Eliz went on a picnic today that the Junior Red Cross had.I'm going to try to get Mother & Daddy to drive up to Uncle Sil's again in a week

or so. It would be good for both of them.Glad you are feeling well.

Lots of love,Eugenia

P.S. Don't bother to send back the announcement of Marvin III's arrival that I am enclosing.

Friday A.M.Sept. 10th

Dearest Bobby,I have been thinking of you every day and night, wishing I could see you, and in

my heart praying that you were well and all right.Saturday night Aunt Dootz, Aunt Ella and Jule came over. We served Coca

Colas, especially so I could "show off" my attractive glass holders you sent me. They admired them very much, and I enjoyed having them to use. You were sweet to send them to me.

Elizabeth started to school yesterday. She gained some this summer and looks and feels real well. Eugenia may not go back until after rush-week, which will be next Friday. I think the experience she got from selling will always be of some help to her.

Yesterday I saw Aunt Lila for a little while and drove her over to June's on N. Highland. Thomas and his wife have been staying with Aunt Lila most of the summer. His wife, Willie Mae, does most of the cooking. Thomas wants to get transferred to this section if he can.

I suppose Mrs. Persons is glad to have Mildred with her, since Mary Elizabeth will probably be leaving for school soon. I wrote Mildred to come and stay with us any time she wanted to, and to bring Mrs. Persons if she would enjoy coming.

I have an enlarged picture of our sweet, precious Joe hanging by my bed. It is so good of him. It is made from the one I had Mr. Biggers take of him while he was on his furlough.

Have you had any recent kodak pictures made? Wish you could get some made and send us.

Sally Bruce wrote Aunt Dootz that she would send pictures of Marvin III soon. Aunt Dootz certainly is thrilled about the baby. She knitted and did lots of sewing for him.

Now that Italy is out of the war, I hope Germany, and especially the beastly Japs will soon be destroyed and you can hurry home, darling.

We had to turn our heat on for a little while this morning, so you see how near winter it is getting to be.

Aunt Lila is having her teeth removed, so she will not teach for a couple of months. I think she will feel better after they are all out. She really did enjoy June's baby this summer. He is a cute little fellow.

The Lockridges have moved over to Brookwood Hills. I don't know who lives in their house now.

The Thornwells have asked about you and Mildred several times.Believe I told you I had a sweet letter from George Magruder and also his

mother. George is in the Pacific area.Elizabeth says there are lots of new girls, from every where who have moved to

Atlanta, that are going to the Seminary this year.I hope our letters reach you regularly each week. Also hope you are comfortable

and "well-fed" wherever you are. Remember we are always thinking of you, you are in our hearts every single minute, darling. Take care of yourself, and always be careful.

We are all well, and doing the best we can each day. Daddy planted turnip salad, and it is up. Bunch and the Romberger's cat love to race all over it.

Lots of love, hugs & kisses,Devotedly,Mother

Sunday nightSept. 12th

Dearest Bobby,Today we got up early and drove down to Eatonton to spend the day with Uncle

Nesbit and Aunt Dixie. Aunt Lila went with us. Uncle Nesbit took us way back to show us Mother's share of the property. We really walked a long way. Mother and Daddy enjoyed it - it was good for them. I didn't know that place was so big. We didn't even walk all over Mother's lot. They have some little baby pigs just a week old and some baby turkeys - also a little white billy-goat that Mother talked to (you know how she can do it).

Elizabeth started to school Thursday. She won't have to begin studying until this week. I have to go back Friday.

Mother and Daddy send their love and Mother said she would write you tomorrow or the next day.

Eliz said she gave Bunch a piece of cake the other day and he buried it like he does his bones. So she watched where he put it and after he had gone she dug it up - for his own good. I wonder if he'll go back for it in a few weeks.

Friday night I spent the night with Jule. Hope you are well.Lots of love,Eugenia

The leaves are just beginning to turn in Atlanta. I bet they are pretty up in the mountains now. Here in Athens they are still green.

I sent George's pin back to him last week. He wrote me a real sad letter yesterday. I hated to send it back because I knew it would make him feel bad, but it was the fair thing to do since I don't like him that much.Classes have just been going for about 7 or days but I feel like I've been up here for 2 or 3 months already.

I certainly would like to see you this afternoon, and I wonder what you are doing.I'm glad you liked the pictures we sent you. We were unable to get a film while

Mildred was here, they are rather hard to get often; however, Jule came over and made some in color film, so maybe we can get some duplicates to send you. She made some of Mildred, Eugenia and Elizabeth with colored leaves for a background.

You were sweet to get Christmas presents for so many of us. I know you need to relax every chance you have, so we all will value your gifts more than ever.

Hope you had an easy-going horse to ride, so that you were not too stiff afterwards. Remember when you and Rawson went riding early one morning (in shorts) with Edward McDuffey? You told us about it when you came home.

Elizabeth went over to Athens Friday to visit Eugenia & see a ball game. I think they (Athens) played Kentucky. Believe I told you Eugenia was elected to Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity.

We had a nice letter from Mr. Deck. He was your's and Joe's Scout Master. He said he would always remember you and Joe as two fine boys. Also, he is now in England, and offered to take pictures or do anything we wanted him to do for us. He is with the Quartermaster Corps.

Yesterday I raked leaves, but it is raining now, and will bring more leaves down. This week I am going to mail you a photograph of Joe. It is a smaller size of the

one he had made in April while here on his furlough. We think it is so good of him. I think it is small enough for you to keep with you.

Miss Hightower and Mrs. Fleming call real often. They always enquire about you and send their love.

Mildred was sweet to offer to keep-house while I took a trip, but I find I am better satisfied here at home. Daddy doesn't travel by car now anyway.

It certainly would be wonderful to have you home for Christmas. Anyway, we can be hoping and praying that you can be home for next Christmas. We will be thinking of you all the time, darling. Can't some of you boys persuade Tom Kerr to dress up like Santa?

Daddy will be glad to mail the Post & Collins to you each week.Take care of yourself, and never forget to be careful and calm as possible. We

are always thinking of you. We have sent two boxes to you. Lots of love & kisses.Devotedly,Mother

Dear Bobbie,Am enclosing a picture of Aunt Louise that turned out pretty well. It was taken at

Uncle Syl's lake on Aunt Nelly's birthday. I guess you heard all about that picnic

reunion. Will have to have another one when Sally-Bruce and Mildred are here so they can get the assorted Aunts and Uncles straight.

We had such a nice Thanksgiving Day here. There were 12 Neels and a turkey all at one table in this tiny house. Mary Ann and Julia came up from Mercer in Macon Wednesday night and Ralph, Jr. came out from Tech Thursday morning. Aunt Isa and Ralph arrived about 10 and your family about 12. I went to a movie with the 4 "pinks" Wednesday, a real wild Westerner called "Old Oklahoma". You should see those collitch (sic) girls and the red headed sophomore! They make quite a team.

Marvin is still on the same island, I think. He keeps expecting a transfer but each time they move his exec instead. His son weighs 12 1/2 pounds now, and pictures of him are precious.

Mother is having the time of her life exploring the toy departments again after all these years. She is fascinated with her grandmother hood!

We comb the papers for news in your part of the world. I get the New York Times at the office and Time and Life at home. Occasionally they have pictures not seen in the local papers.

Ralph Jr. gets his commission as Ensign in June. HE surely is tall. So is Gratton, Jr. He's a brand new 2nd lieutenant from Air Corps O.C.S. in Miami in communications. He'll know tomorrow if he will be stationed here.

We are all so proud of you, and just love Mit. You and Marvin really know how to choose!

Love,Jule

it yesterday morning. They had a Sunday mail delivery because of the Christmas rush.We tried to find some china in Mildred's pattern to send her for Christmas but

they just don't have any right now. So we sent some after dinner coffee cups -- they're so pretty. Elizabeth and I sent her some "Christmas Night" perfume -- isn't that one of her favorites?

Christmas 1943Dearest Bobby,

All day I have thought of you, wondering what you were doing, and hoping you were enjoying rest and quiet, also a good Christmas dinner.

This is my Christmas gift stationary from Mildred. It is lovely, and just what I needed. I'm using it to write you first. She sent all of us such nice gifts. She is sending Daddy "Life", which he likes very much. She sent a delicious fruit cake and crate of oranges too. We sent her three after-dinner coffee cups, which I think were very lovely. Eugenia & Elizabeth sent her perfume.

Daddy cut the Christmas tree Wednesday afternoon and Elizabeth decorated it. It is in the same corner, near the "what-not". It is real pretty. We put red berries in a vase near your picture, and rose buds by Joe's picture.

It was very cold here, ice and sleet on the trees and shrubs. It is melting now, and we are glad so we can get down the drive-way. Aunt Isa invited us up there today, but the highways were too dangerous.

Saw where Billy Edison has a little daughter, born about a week ago. Mrs. Watkins sent us a lovely Angel Food cake.

In a few more weeks you will be twenty-four years old. I can't realize it, and yet, Dec. 24th was our Twenty-Fifth Anniversary. I hope this will be the last birthday you have to spend away from home, and the last Christmas.

Sometimes I get letters from Joe Robbin's Mother. Do you see him often? She seems to be a sweet, lovely lady.

Though you were far away in person from us this Christmas Day, you were very close to us in our thoughts, dear son.
