Task/ Questions: Describe the student, including both characteristic and unusual behavior, using the prompts provided in the Student Profile Guidelines in the Practice Teaching Handbook

Purpose/ Rationale of choice: In my class students sits in group of six. Each crew has 6 members. However there were two students sitting near the teacher’s table. I got curious and enquired my CT that why do they don’t sit in bigger crews. She told me that they both have been referred to school counselor. So, I have made them sit near me so that I can observe their each and every activity. She also told me that X has been recommended to OT by the school counselor. I further enquired that has he been diagnosed with anything. She said “ No”. Several questions started coming to my mind like without having any diagnosis why has he been recommended to OT. His name was also being called in the class several times by every teacher for not listening to them, not following instructions, not completing H.W etc. So, I decided to choose this child for my case study.

Profile:

Physical Presence and Gestures:

X has a normal body built with short hairs. He always wears comfortable clothes like T-shirts, Shorts or track pants. The excitement and happiness is reflected in his eyes. Whenever there is a transition in class, he moves from his place to his friends place to chit chat. He also starts singing and dancing whenever he gets little leisure time. He likes outdoor activities and participates in all such activities like games and expedition projects (rocket making). His pace is slow while working in class and needs continuous reminders to stay focused and complete his task. His tone is low while giving response in class; however his voice is loud and clear when he is in sports field playing with his friends.

Disposition:

His is not very expressive about his feelings and is having even temperament but his happiness is expressed through his eyes and smile. He seems tired many times in the class and sometime he also sleeps while the class is going on. Mostly, he sits in slouching posture in the class. He also chews small paper pieces and pencil in the class. He often talks about music, singers and their composition. He likes music and loves singing.

Relationship with Children and Adults:

He is friendly with his peers and is recognized well in the group. He is a part of band group in his class and won III prize in wired competition. He sometime gets in to conflict with his peers which get resolved with the intervention of the teacher. He is also friendly with adults but never shares his feeling, problems or thoughts with them.

Activities and Interest:

He is very passionate for music. He likes singing and playing guitar. He got III prize in Wired Competition at school. He doesn’t like to write much however he doodles images related to music like guitar, a boy singing etc. He holds pencil in a very different way while writing. He shows interest in activity based projects like rocket making and designing travel brochure etc. He also shows interest in math’s activity like working with rangometry pieces and fraction kit.

Ways of Learning and Thinking:

In learning the child focuses on teacher’s instruction but he needs continuous reminders to stay focused and finish his work. He relies on observation, steps and sequence to accomplish the target. He is better in maths but requires working on his writing skills which lacks expression and imagination. He doesn’t show preference for any subject but participates in activities that are organized in class. Sometimes he pretends to be thinking or writing but actually his work is never up to the mark. It’s easier for him to learn the mathematical concepts than to do the writing work using his own imagination and expression.

What do the artifacts (notebooks, drawing, project work etc.) say about the child?

He doesn’t complete most of his work and when he is asked individually to complete his work he does it but he seems to have no interest and inner motivation to do the work. While going through his notebooks I found that his work is not systematic and organized. He has done his work just for the sake of doing it. The worksheets were not stuck at the proper place and some of them were missing. His answers lack evidences and supporting details .In creative writing he has written only few lines. He was given three chances to recite the poem but he couldn’t do it however he performed well when he was asked to make the space travel brochure.

Teacher’s view about the child:

The teacher says he is very lethargic, disorganized and sometimes he sleeps in the class. She says that his concepts are clear and there are no gaps in his learning but he is not focused. Once she cleaned her bag and found that it had worksheets from the previous class. She says that he needs parent’s attention and he also needs occupational therapy which has been communicated to the parents in the PTM.

Parent’s view about the child:

I didn’t have the opportunity to interact with the parents but I read a mail from parents appreciating her child that he made the space travel brochure without their intervention and help. She wrote that he is becoming responsible towards his work.

Way Forward:

I have been observing this child since last few months and now I find that he is gradually becoming responsible towards his work. He is more focused in class and raises hand to give response. He should be getting OT services which seems helping in developing his focus. The parents and teacher should keep an eye on his work on daily basis. The parents should ask daily to the child about his day in school and keep a check on his work. He should be motivated to complete his homework and his all efforts should be appreciated to reinforce learning. He should also be encouraged to practice singing and participate in such programs.
