The Questions to Ask Record Book

Page 2: €¦ · Web viewHowever, do not force it, particularly during the first call. Talking to your Silver Warrior will become easier and feel more natural as you get to know each their

Things to remember before you start your calls:

If you can , try to keep the conversation going for 10-15 minutes. However, do not force it, particularly during the first call. Talking to your Silver Warrior will become easier and feel more natural as you get to know each other.

This is a conversation not an interview, therefore:

start by greeting the person and ask how they are doing; Introduce yourself and let them know if the call has being

recorded; answer their questions too. But remember if you don’t feel

comfortable answering a specific question, you can gently communicate that to your Silver Warrior and move on.

Similarly, if you realise that your Silver Warrior is not comfortable answering a particular question, move on and ask other questions.

In addition to the questions we provide you with, feel free to make up your own questions, if it feels natural to ask other questions as the conversation goes on. You might be interested to know a bit more about something that your Silver Warrior says during the call. So, feel free to do that, but remember to ask respectful and sensible questions.

NOTE-TAKING: We strongly suggest that you record the phone call (Remember to inform your Silver Warrior of this at the beginning of every call). This is so that you can note down a brief summary of his/her answers. In a separate document we will inform you on how to record phone calls. If you are also taking notes during the call, just

Page 3: €¦ · Web viewHowever, do not force it, particularly during the first call. Talking to your Silver Warrior will become easier and feel more natural as you get to know each their

write dot points, not full answers. So, you can pay attention to what the Silver Warrior is saying and you are not distracted.

Starting a phone conversation with somebody you don’t know can be nerve wrecking. So, here is a script to guide you during the first conversation:

Hi________, my name is___________. I am a student at the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College. I am going to call you over the next few weeks at ___ on ___ and ___. I am looking forward to getting to know you.

You could then ask- “Have you had a nice day?” Or “What have you been doing today?”

We recommend that you tell the Silver Warrior (older person) that “I will be calling you twice a week over the next nine weeks. At the end of the calls am going to complete a school project that requires me to present some information to my teacher that I have learned from talking with you”.

When you are talking to the Silver Warrior try to give some responses to the answers e.g. “Oh that’s interesting!” or “I barrack for Collingwood too ” or “My family is much smaller than yours!” rather than just going to the next question in their list.

At the end of the call thank them and let them know when you will call next.

This is a very special call both for you and your Silver Warrior. Before starting the call, take the time to reflect on the things you are grateful for and you have learnt from this experience. During the call, take the time to thank your Silver Warrior for sharing pieces of his/her life story with you. Let him/her know what this experience has taught you.

Things I talked about during this call:

Things I have learnt from this experience:

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________

And now What?

At the end of the project you will need to create something that narrates what you have found about your Silver Warrior’s life.

Page 35: €¦ · Web viewHowever, do not force it, particularly during the first call. Talking to your Silver Warrior will become easier and feel more natural as you get to know each their

You will be able to use the information you have recorded in your Questions to Ask Record Book to help you to do this. This could be a labelled pictures story (the Silver Warrior could provide you with Pictures if

possible); PowerPoint or other types of digital Presentations; a written story, a voice recording of you about what you have learned; a video clip; a puppet play about the person’s life, or you could come up with your own way to present this. We will give you more information about this next week. There will be four $25.00 JB Hi-Fi vouchers awarded for the best 4 pieces of work.

You will be informed of the specific deadlines for the submission of your “Silver Warrior’s profile” in a couple of weeks.
