Home Learning Information Year 5 Week 8 WC: 8 th June 2020 Hello Year 5 Wow! What a wonderful time was had last Friday. We really, really enjoyed cycling round and waving and saying hello and looking at your scarecrows and, of course, seeing you! (The best bit.) Did any of you spot our little messages? On Mrs S’s cape it said “Hellooo Year 5” and on Mr W’s t-shirt it read “We miss you!” How are you all doing? We were a little disappointed to learn, that we will not be seeing you all together again this summer. I know we get to see your work and little videos, but it isn’t quite the same. Did anyone follow the Ickabog link from last week? I have only read a few chapters, but I am intrigued. Let us know what you think. In case anyone missed it last week, we have left the link below. We hope you are all keeping well and being kind to your family. Mrs S and Mr W PS. Quick reminder or our Year5 email address: [email protected] PPS. Saw this on twitter and thought it might interest a few budding artists and JK Rowling fans. Follow the link for the exciting news! https://www.jkrowling.com/j-k-rowling- introduces-the-ickabog/

WC: 8th June 2020

Hello Year 5

Wow! What a wonderful time was had last Friday. We really, really enjoyed cycling round and waving and saying hello and looking at your scarecrows and, of course, seeing you! (The best bit.) Did any of you spot our little messages? On Mrs S’s cape it said “Hellooo Year 5” and on Mr W’s t-shirt it read “We miss you!”How are you all doing? We were a little disappointed to learn, that we will not be seeing you all together again this summer. I know we get to see your work and little videos, but it isn’t quite the same. Did anyone follow the Ickabog link from last week? I have only read a few chapters, but I am intrigued. Let us know what you think. In case anyone missed it last week, we have left the link below. These activities are designed to be completed at home whilst school is closed. They are not compulsory, but intended to support families whilst we are unable to be with your children at this time. The school has received feedback that parents would like a little more structure to maths and English. To that end we have split the work into 5 short sessions per subject which your children should be able to have a go at independently. Please do not worry if you can't complete all the sessions, just do as much as you can when you can in order to fit in with your family routines.

ing

Children should be reading every day. Here are some ideas to use during/after reading your book:

Talk about the main points of the text. Discuss any new vocabulary, how many new words did you learn to read today? If you read a fiction (story) text, use the information given to predict what might happen next and explain your reasoning for this prediction. Answer questions about how a character may be feeling (based on their actions). Answer questions about the setting of the story. Look out for interesting adjectives that help to describe characters and settings, you may want to remember them to use in your writing. If the text is non-fiction, how many new facts did you learn from the book? Was the language in your non-fiction text different to the language you find in a fiction text? How is your non-fiction text set out? Does the non-fiction text contents, index and maybe glossary pages? What are they for?

You can continue to record the titles of the books you read in your reading diary.

Spel

lings This week's spellings are the ‘ir’ sound. We have started a new book called Ski the South Pole which is on the website.

Spellings are on Spelling Shed along with the statutory curriculum words.

Title/ Objective: Writing a mini book – a short story where you are the main character! This is the second and final week of this work – we hope you enjoy it. Last week, you did some research (just like real authors) into your characters and started to plan your story. Now it is time to follow your plan and actually do the writing. On the website is a detailed plan with all the resources, any links and information on it- it is labelled English Plan Week 9.

SESSION 1: Spelling practice and write the first half of your story

SESSION 2: Spelling practice, and finish writing your story

SESSION 3: Spelling practice then edit and make any changes to your storySESSION 4: Spelling Test! Make mini book and write up your story in it.SESSION 5: Comprehension- JK Rowling (all resources and answers are on the English Plan Week 9)

Here's an extra challenge : Video yourself reading your story (like the authors on the YouTube links) to a sibling or friend or even your toys.

Here are three activities for you to complete:

Geography- Do the word search and then complete the activity on North America

Art/ Design and Technology- You have made your own mini book in English and now it is time to illustrate it. Some authors can draw quite well and others use collage or pictures from clip art. Consequently, use can do the same! Your mini book does need some illustration, but how you do it, is up to you.

Science – Our topic for this term is Living things and their habitats. Can you create a bug hotel in your garden? It can be any size from a bottle to a small box to a pallet. Follow the link from Spring Watch for some top tips.
