In a Magic Square all the rows, columns and diagonals add to the same number. This number is called the 'Magic Constant.'

Here are some questions about this Magic Square.

1) What is the Magic Constant of this Magic Square?

This particular square is especially 'magic' as some 2 x 2 squares within it also add to that number.

2) How many of these squares can you find?

3) What happens to the Magic Constant if you add 2 to each number in the square?

4) What happens if you double each number?

5) Can you make a square in which the Magic Constant is 17? How did you do it?

6) Can you make a square in which the Magic Constant is 38? How did you do it?

Challenge!

7) What other numbers under 100 can you make into the Magic Constant by changing all the numbers in the square in the same way?

8) Can some be made in more than one way?

9) Are there some numbers you really cannot make?

10.) What did you learn from doing this investigation?

I can analyse how lifestyles can impact on the environment and Earth’s resources and can make suggestions about how to live in a more sustainable way. TCH 2-06a

L.I. I know that fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas and that we burn them to produce energy to make transport work and to provide us with electricity. These produce carbon dioxide which is added to the atmosphere and contributes to global warming.

I understand that to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and to reduce global warming we can use renewable Energy sources.

I am able to identify sustainable sources of energy such as wind turbines and compare these with non-renewable fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels which are non-renewable.

(Non-renewable means it cannot be replaced at all or it will take a long time to be replaced.)

How are fossil fuels made?

Plants take in carbon dioxide which is written as CO2. The plants keep the carbon and give away the oxygen. Animals breathe in the oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

Plants and animals depend on each other. It works out well. For hundreds of millions of years, plants and animals have lived and died. Their remains have been buried deep beneath Earth's surface. So for hundreds of millions of years, this material has been getting squished and cooked by lots of pressure and heat.

https://www.kidcyber.com.au/fossil-fuels

For hundreds of millions of years, dead plants and animals were buried under water and dirt. Heat and pressure turned the dead plants and animals into oil, coal, and natural gas.

So what happens to all this dead plant and animal stuff? It turns into what we call fossil fuels: oil, coal, and natural gas. This is what we now use to energize our world. We burn the oil and gas in cars, trucks, planes, trains, power plants, heaters, speed boats, barbecues, and many other things that require energy. We burn coal in power plants to produce electricity. As these fossil fuels burn they emit (produce) carbon dioxide which becomes trapped in the atmosphere and contributes to global warming and climate change.

Task – Look around your house (or school) and list the items that -

use electricity use gas or oil

What can you do to reduce the amount of electricity that you use as a family?

Fossil fuels like oil and coal are running out because some parts of the world have used huge amounts to fuel industry and transport.

Fossil fuels form all the time but it takes millions of years for the coal, oil and gas to be created, and we are removing them much faster than that. That is why fossil fuels are said to be non-renewable. (Cannot be replaced easily and quickly.)Some of our electricity will be produced from the burning of fossil fuels but in Scotland more and more of the electricity is being produced by renewable sources such as wind (turbines) and water (tidal power.) The good thing about these is that they do not emit carbon dioxide and therefore help towards reducing global warming.

Renewable sources of energy means that they will never run out which means that they are sustainable. Wind, the Sun and water are renewable energy sources that can be used to create electricity.

10

Page 11: milnesprimary.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewgreen for positive orange for need to put more effort in red – not interested at all. Keeping Your Numeracy Skills Sharp. Choose

There are different types of renewable energy. Some of these are -

Hydropower - moving water helps create electricity by turning turbines under the sea as the tide moves in and out, or by using water stored in a dam.

Solar energy - solar panels collect energy from the Sun to create electricity.

Wind energy - wind turns turbines to create electricity.

These sources of energy are much cleaner to use than fossil fuels because they do not produce harmful gases that cause pollution and climate change. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zshp34j/articles/zntxgwx

Task 2 Draw the different types of renewable energy which are used to help produce electricity?

Task – What types of renewable energy are being used in Moray? (Research and discuss with family)

What types of renewable energy do you use at home?

11

Page 12: milnesprimary.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewgreen for positive orange for need to put more effort in red – not interested at all. Keeping Your Numeracy Skills Sharp. Choose

Task - Draw and label examples to show how energy can be wasted in your home. Discuss these with your family.

Advantages and Disadvantages of renewable energy.

https://www.funkidslive.com/learn/energy-sources/hydroelectric-power-energy-source-fact-file/

What are the advantages of using hydroelectric power?

Water is plentiful, free, and renewable. Hydro-electric power does not produce any carbon dioxide emissions when using water

to produce electricity. Electricity can be generated 24 hours a day as long as there is enough water. But this

can’t happen every day as the reservoir needs time to fill up again from time to time. The dam gates can be opened and closed to control when the electricity is made. The amount of electricity produced can also be controlled by changing how much water

can flow. It is much more reliable than wind and solar power, although it does depend on enough

rain, especially for ‘run of the river’ systems.

What are the disadvantages of using hydroelectric power?

It is very expensive to build a dam, and construction can produce a lot of emissions.

When a dam is built, a huge area is flooded to make a lake. People and animals living there have to leave.

It can be difficult to find a suitable site for a reservoir or a dam. There are very few available sites for these in the UK.

There can be negative environmental impacts. Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected.

Task – Choose one other type of renewable energy and write about its advantages and disadvantages.

Reading

Task – Summarise the following passage – ‘Clean Green Energy’ in 100 words. Summarising a text means picking out the main ideas and leaving out anything that is not essential. Good readers look for the main ideas as they read and can give the ‘gist’ of what they have read in their own words.

How to summarise what you read: Look at the topic sentences – the first sentence in each paragraph. Look at the last sentence in each paragraph. Answer the – who? What? Why? When? Where? And How? of the text. Focus on the key details Leave out little details that aren’t important. Write only enough to give the gist of the passage.

Writing

Write a persuasive letter to Miss Karam requesting the need for solar panels or a wind turbine or hydro power from the Fochabers Burn to be constructed on either the roof or grounds of Milne’s Primary.

To be successful- Use a letter format Explain clearly what you want to happen in paragraph one. Use the next three paragraphs to give particular points as to why Milne’s Primary

should have some form of renewable energy to create the schools electricity. These points should be detailed using explanations, examples and evidence. Include a paragraph making a suggestion as to what a good outcome might be. A last paragraph should summarise the previous paragraphs in two or three lines. Include flattery and a rhetorical question.

Use time connectives e.g. firstly… secondly… Use persuasive phrases e.g. some believe that…. I am sure …

Points to consider -

It would reduce the schools electric bills / therefore more money for … Contributes to reducing global warming- more eco friendly- children leading the way

for a more environmentally friendly future. It is a sustainable energy. Pupils will learn about renewable energy first hand. There is enough land available on the school grounds and on the school roof for solar

panels / wind turbine and the burn is close to the school. Using more computers and electronic equipment in school so will need more

electricity… Could there be more than one… think of our weather… what would the best one to

have? Think of the weather all year round… link with heating…lights…etc. add your own points
