Worship: Sunday 9:30 AM Bible Class to follow GOD’S ENCOURAGING WORD I Need More…GOOD NEWS Indeed, we live in frazzled and frustrated times. Just turn on the nightly news. So frequently we are given reports of events that have devastated property and lives; are told about individuals that have deviated from law and order; and hear of other stories that dampen our spirits. On a regular basis, most of the news is not good news, and a depressed sigh first finds solace in the silence of a turned-off television. Turns out, though, that we don’t have to turn on a TV to know that. We don’t even need to be near it. As our consciences rerun the past, we see where our own deviations have had a devastating impact. As a direct result, our spirits are dampened and depressed. Even life-long Christians feel the sting of past sins as their consciences cry a guilty testimony. That’s the “news” we know by nature. That’s God’s Law on sinful hearts, and that’s why stricken hearts crave more good news. The calm to the craving is not attained by turning off; we get it by tuning in. The answer is not in blocking out God’s Word or dulling our consciences by making poor excuses. The solution is still found in what God’s good news says to every individual—even to you. The calm, promise, and solution remains the message of the gospel! Hearts are calmed at the message of Christ for us! And it’s in that message the apostle Paul, a very real sinner, would have sinners still take comfort and confidence. As he lifted Timothy’s eyes and heart to the grace of the cross, so he lifts ours: “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst” (1 Timothy 1:15). Craving more good news? Forgiven sinner, tune in to the Savior who carried your every sin! See him in his Word! Redeemed believer, tune in to the gospel—God’s good news that quiets sin’s accusations! Hear that saving message! Beloved child of God, tune in to the trustworthy message of the 10203 W. Tieton Drive, Yakima WA 98908 Isaac P. Cherney, Pastor www.redeemer-yakima.org (262) 204-8027

GOD’S ENCOURAGING WORDI Need More…GOOD NEWS

Indeed, we live in frazzled and frustrated times. Just turn on the nightly news. So frequently we are given reports of events that have devastated property and lives; are told about individuals that have deviated from law and order; and hear of other stories that dampen our spirits. An Opportunity to Help!

Our synod of WELS is constantly pursuing ways to enhance the training of our future pastors and teachers. One of those ways is the Immersion Program for Spanish study that teacher-track and pastor-track students use to become better Spanish-speakers. One such student is a friend of Grace and Redeemer congregations here in Yakima: pastor-track Evan Turriff. Evan is currently pooling resources to be able to make

the most out of this unique experience… and we can help! Evan has a GoFundMe page going (https://www.gofundme.com/spanish-immersion-in-argentina) where you can donate to his cause of reaching Argentina for high-level Spanish training. Just visit the link and see! There Evan describes the program:

Hey there! I'm taking a trip to Argentina with other like-minded people who are also going to Martin Luther College for Spanish teaching/pastoral ministry for an immersion/cultural experience. We will be taking a month's worth of classes as well as doing various excursions around Buenos Aires. We are getting much needed experience that you just can't get in a classroom or in the States. Our programs recommend at least 1 immersion trip. Since these trips are beneficial, taking 2 trips is often recommended. All of the students have to pay for this on top of their regular tuition and it severely limits our power to earn money in the summer. Any help given will be appreciated!

The exact cost of the trip is $3,761 (not including airfare). This pays for the courses I am taking, housing, and things we do as a group.

My goal with this program is to be a world missionary preaching to the people of Latin America. On top of providing the word, we also help provide basic medical supplies, school supplies, and basic home necessities!

After the cost of my trip has been raised (trip + airfare), I will donate the rest of the money to the Immersion Program Fund to be split among the other participants.

If you can help Evan on his way to better language acquisition and ministry work, God bless! We keep Evan and all students of Martin Luther College in our prayers.

By Gail Thornton

April 2006

“Go stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people the message of this new life”Acts 5:20

Ask a cattle rancher what their favorite time of the year is and you will likely get this response: “Spring.” His favorite color will be green, the color of new grass. After months of hauling hay to his cattle, the promise of spring tells him that his herd will soon be out of their small pastures and grazing new grass on the open range.

Ranchers get to witness firsthand the miracle of new life God brings to his creation each spring. The birth of a calf is a good example of the attention to detail God puts into each new life. When a cow gives birth, the cow quickly gets to her feet and starts licking her calf. She always starts with the nose cleaning the airways so the calf can breathe. She dries the calf with her tongue. Within fifteen minutes the calf will begin nursing. It will receive its first life-giving milk, which contains necessary antibodies and nutrients.

All of us are witnesses to many kinds of new life that present themselves each spring. The sights and smells that arrive with the longer and warmer spring days uplift our spirits after the long, cold, and dreary days of winter.

Each church year during the six weeks of Lent we take time to remember the painful suffering of our Savior as he died on the cross for our sins. Lent is a very solemn time, full of dark days and ending with Jesus’ death and burial. At the end of the Lenten season all hope appears gone and death seems to have won.

Then Easter morning arrives. The tomb is empty and we celebrate the greatest victory the world has ever known. The Savior of all mankind has risen from the grave. Jesus Christ has paid the price for our sins. Through his life-giving blood death has been defeated. We have the promise of a new life, which through God’s grace is eternal and all the details have been worked out.

In this spring of 2006, the hills of the Yakima Valley are turning green. The cows with their young calves are being turned out on the hillsides. The flowers are starting to push their way through the leaves in our gardens. At Redeemer we are in the middle of the Lenten season and Easter is just around the corner with its renewed promise of a loving God’s forgiveness of sins and eternal life. However, there is something new and special happening this year. Our Redeemer family will not only celebrate the risen Lord, but we will also soon celebrate the opening of a brand-new facility in West Valley. By the grace of God, we have been given the opportunity to spread his life-giving gospel message to a whole new area of the Yakima Valley. This will be our time to share the good news of the gift of salvation to more precious souls. When our new building is finished and we have completed the move, our work and our mission will truly begin. Our mission statement says we are to bring the good news of the gospel to the Yakima Valley and beyond. There should be nothing more important to the members of Redeemer than meeting this challenge.

Spring is the annual rebirth of the life of earthly things. The period from Lent through Easter is a time of strengthening and renewing our Christian faith. This year let us joyfully celebrate a rebirth of Redeemer’s mission as we begin the task of spreading the Gospel message to a whole new area of our valley.
