President's Message- Sandy Hollenbeck

I am proud to announce that Grand Haven Woman’s Club has made another giant step forward in supporting Flagler County. During our October Board Meeting, Mr. Bill Tol from the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation spoke regarding the benefits of our club becoming a member of the Foundation’s 20/20 Society. The 20/20 Society is a group of supporters with a shared vision of providing quality, state-of-the art world-class healthcare to Flagler County. It supports the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation and the Florida Hospital Hospice Care Foundation which includes the Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Library, the Freytag Children’s Rehabilitation Center and Freytag Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, the Cancer Care Fund, the Cancer Institute and the 2nd Cardiac Catheterization Lab. After Mr. Tol finished speaking to the board, a vote was taken and was passed to move our yearly donations to the Foundation’s 20/20 Society.

The next time you are visiting our hospital, stop and look for our name on the Hospital Donor Recognition Wall and feel a sense of pride that we are supporting our local hospital. November is the month when we stop to think about all that we are thankful for. So as each one of you remember what you are thankful for please do not forget the wonderful support each of you provide to our membership and what we are able to give to Flagler County.

We have a wonderful program and luncheon planned for all of you this month. You won’t want to miss it. “Happy Thanksgiving” and remember:

PUBLIC ISSUES - Suzanne Gaguzis

Grand Haven Realty is hosting its 3rd annual holiday promotion for our military troops in Afghanistan and is asking the ladies of GHWC to join in the effort. If you would wish to help support our troops through this effort, you can bring donations to the November meeting where they will be collected and delivered to Grand Haven Realty.

As in previous years, Jim Cullis will pay for the shipping costs to get the items to the troops.

Items requested are phone cards, playing cards, candy, trail mix, beef jerky, nuts, cookies, crackers, peanut butter, Crystal Lite (water flavors) NO BOOKS please. Everything must be sent via international mail, so it is suggested to keep donations to smaller sized items.

FOOD PANTRY – Sheryl Marvin & Terry Ranieri

Thanks to all of you for the wonderful donations of food and checks that we received at the October meeting. Once again, both the Resource Center and The Family Life Center shelter were thrilled to receive our gifts. Remember, checks can be made out to either Church Women United or The Family Life Center. Both of the pantries we donate to continue to be in need of all types of non-perishable food items. Protein foods, such as tuna, canned chicken, stews, peanut butter, and the beloved Spam are always in demand. Canned fruits and vegetables are needed, along with fresh fruits and veggies, such as potatoes, carrots, apples, onions, etc. As the weather turns cooler, soups, hot cereals and even hot cocoa mixes are appreciated. With the holidays approaching, I’m sure cornbread mixes, cranberry sauce, canned gravies, cookie or cake mixes or other items your family enjoys at the holidays would be very welcome. In addition to food items, foil, plastic wrap, zip lock bags are needed. Also, toilet paper and 13 gallon trash bags have been requested. As Thanksgiving approaches and we reflect on all we are thankful for, please remember those in Flagler County who need our help.We wish you and your family a great month and a happy Thanksgiving!Terry and Sheryl

LET’S DO LUNCH! – Dianne Robichaud, Jelena Kaveney & Nancy Richards

The Let's Do Lunch had their opening luncheon on October 8th with luncheons and a brunch.

They say that laughter is the best medicine! It certainly was true forEva Reznik. Eva thanked us all for our company, the tasty dishes weall prepared and the beautifully decorated table. After two days of beingsick and in pain, she decided to bring a dish and come to the luncheonand our lively discussions sprinkled with lots of laughter made for a painless, happy afternoon.

I talked to Sally Castellari and she hosted an Italian luncheon centeredaround a Spinach Chicken Lasagna---yum. There was a twist to the Italian theme in that a dessert that was brought was called "Not Yo Mama's Banana Pudding which everyone said was delicious. No calories of course!

Our membership is still open and if you have the time (second Wednesday in the months of November, January, March and May) come join us.

Contact either Dianne Robichaud, Jelena Kaveney or Nancy Richards,

WAYS AND MEANS – Lucy Crowley

A huge thank-you to all who supported our chance drawing last month. Due to your generosity, we have added $750.00 to our fund raising efforts--$200 of this for the breast cancer donation and $550 for our general donations fund.

Our next fundraising event is the Evening of Fun and Fashion at Chez Jacqueline on Wednesday, November 12 th. As of this writing we have 30 ladies signed up. Call me at 446-2671 or email me at [email protected] if you have not purchased a ticket and would like to attend and I will let you know if we can add a few more people. We sometimes have cancellations at the last minute so there is always a chance of space for another person. Chez Jacqueline can only hold between 30-35 people for an event such as this.

It’s hard to believe that the Day of Games is just over two months away!! But it is that close, so at the November meeting we will begin selling tickets for our Day of Games on January 19, 2015Please get your friends together and buy your tickets early. Ticket price is $25.00--$10.00 of which is tax deductible. Please have one lady from you group sign up for the table. She will then give us all four (or more) names, the game you will be playing and the money for the table. Those of you who do not have a group and want to play, please let us know that and we will match you up with other single players to the best of our ability. We will also be selling tickets at the Dec. meeting.

Lucy

WAYS AND MEANS CHANCE BASKETS – Sherry SabolIt is a tradition with our club that the winner of the pink cancer basket returns the basket so that we can use it each year.  It is a special basket made byGloria Sanchez.   It can be returned at our next meeting to Sherry Sabol.

PRESIDENT’S PROJECT - Sally Nord

Once again, thank you for your pennies!!! We did such an awesome job of collecting pennies last year for the District that we have decided to continue this year. Since the President’s Project is Canine Companions, we are calling it “Pennies for Puppies”. So keep those pennies coming!!

I also would like to remind those members who volunteer for the Flagler County Educational System or at the Flagler County Library that I will be contacting you the beginning of December to obtain your volunteer hours for this year. If you are a new volunteer, please let me know so that I can include you in the count.

HISTORY OF THE GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUB–SANDY HOLLENBECK

OUR STORY – Part 3

1916: GFWC worked with the Children's Bureau to promote National Baby Week. Over 2,000 clubs participated by focusing on infant and maternal mortality, birth registration, and public health facilities. The Federation's efforts resulted in the passage of the Sheppard-Towner Act (1921), which advanced maternal education.

1919: Under the direction of the YMCA, GFWC created the Overseas Service Unit and sent 100 young women to Europe to assist wounded soldiers in the aftermath of World War I.

1921: GFWC created the Indian Welfare Committee, which worked improving both education and health facilities on reservations, as well as preserving Native American culture.

1922: GFWC Clubwomen purchased 1734 N Street, NW in Washington, DC to serve as the Federation's International Headquarters. In addition to staff offices and rooms for meetings and receptions, one floor was designated to serve as an apartment for the International President.

1925: GFWC initiated a nationwide Federation survey of the American home, which placed a spotlight on the status of technology in the home. The survey led to the inclusion of homemaker as an occupation on the 1930 United States Census.

EDUCATION - Cathy Whitby & Martha Morris

Thanks so much to the membership for your generosity to the STUFF Bus at the October meeting. Besides several contributions of clothing, we also gave $295 for the students' needs.

At the November meeting, your generosity is again going to be asked to help New Beginnings, a program that helps teenage mothers with parenting classes. Susan Warner, manager and instructor, is in need of new or gently-used books for infant thru age 5.

Also, Susan arranges for pictures with Santa for the children. Because of economic needs, the parents cannot afford to pay for a photographer. We will not ask for outfits as we did last year but if you could make a contribution for this holiday event, it would be appreciated. Please make checks out to “New Beginnings”

This time of year does pull at your purse strings but Susan could use some help, books and/or money to help with this worthy project.

If you are a Season Ticket Holder to the Flagler Playhouse, you might want to, then, donate $5 or so to the International Project as this is the only fundraiser for this project. We can, hopefully, buy another cow! like last year - plus other animals for the Heifer Project.

Heifer International provides cows, goats, chickens, bees, etc. to women in developing countries to help them feed their families and learn to make a living supporting themselves.

DEALING WITH # F O M O

HOME LIFE

Have you ever heard of F O M O? It’s the fear of Missing Out-a disorder seriously infecting our generation and it has gone viral. It is frightening how quickly the symptoms of F O M O have spread. Its recent surge is mostly due to the modern wonders of technology, 4G and social media. How badly does F O M O affect you? Do you fear that you missed atext message from your grandchild; or the most recent photo of a friend’s trip to Italy or perhaps a recent u-tube video that everyone is talking about at the latest neighborhood cocktail party??????? Well don’t worry--you are just like the rest of us in the room.

Here are some suggestions as to what to do to decrease your F O M O level……….First, recognize that F O M O, at its core, is a sense of insecurity. We all have it no matter what it looks like on the outside. Those of us who were not brought up on the latest technological gadget just need to take a deep breath and RELAX. Put your IPhone, IPod, 4G Cell phone, Nook or Flame down and look around and see how great your life is. Unplug for a little while, read a hardbound book, go for a bike ride, take a walk on the beach, go to lunch with a friend – Life is good when you take the time to really enjoy it. Second, recognize that F O M O is not going away anytime soon.

The way to embrace the anxiety surrounding your lack of proficiency in using your smart phone or smart television is to stop trying to download the most recent app, when you are in a hurry. Be prepared to fumble a few times until you get it right. Better yet, ask your grandchild to download the app for you while he/she is visiting and enjoy the pleasure of not missing out on being real with yourself and those around you.(Excerpts from article in Tech Innovations by Guy Barnhart, July 2014)
