Enrichment at HomeInvestigate human and pet enrichment in your home.

Enrichment helps an animal:a. use its senses e.g. smell, touch, taste, see, hearb. move in natural ways e.g. walk, run, jump, fly c. behave in natural ways e.g. sleep, eat, communicate

What to do:Walk around your home. Draw and/or write what enrichment you see for humans and/or pets. Does the enrichment help them use their senses, move and/or behave in natural ways?

Zoo Live StreamsWatch your chosen animal on the Animals at Home live stream.

What to do:1. Visit the Animals at Home livestreams at www.zoo.org.au/animal-house/2. Just like a scientist would, watch the livestream of the animal in its zoo habitat.

If there are no animals to be seen, rewind the video and search for a time where the animal is there.

3. Use your scientific observation skills and watch:a. How the animal is using its senses b. How the animal is movingc. How the animal is behavingd. What enrichment is already in the zoo habitat

Student Workbook: Ideate

Start Here 100 Ideas in 10 MinutesWrite a list of ideas that might help to solve the Challenge.

What to do:1. Re-read your Design Brief and your Research Page notes.2. It’s time to imagine lots of ideas that might help to solve the Challenge. You have 10

minutes to write down as many ideas as possible... the goal is 100 ideas!3. You set your timer to 10 minutes and start writing your ideas down on the Idea Writing

Page (the next page)4. When the timer reaches 10 minutes, stop writing and count up how many ideas you

thought of. Did you make it to 100?

Choose Your IdeaChoose one design idea to prototype.

What to do:1. Read your ideas list and choose your ‘Top 5’ – five ideas that you like the most.2. Are there any ideas that are similar? Do they have things in common? Is there a way to

mash some of your Top 5 ideas together?3. Choose one design idea to try.4. Once you have chosen an idea, search on the Internet to see if someone has already

Student Workbook: Prototype

Build Your IdeaBuild your idea so that others can see it.

What to do:A prototype makes an idea visible – like a 3D model, labelled drawing or animation. You are welcome to use any technology to build a prototype and show your idea.

Look at what materials or technology you have to use. For example: Recycled cardboard boxes Playdough or clay Lego Natural materials from the garden Paper, glue and craft materials Sketches and diagrams on paper Microsoft Office or Adobe suite Drawing or animation apps

Here are some tips for building your prototype:1. Design for the User and the Challenge.2. Return to the Ideate stage (and your ideas list) if your prototype isn’t going to work.3. Return to the Understand stage and do more research if you still have questions.4. Prototyping can take a bit of time to do and you’ll learn as you go. Don’t give up!

Start Here Test Your DesignTest your prototype by getting feedback from others.

Instructions for Presentation:1. Think about who could help you test your prototype by giving you feedback. It could be

people in your class, your friends, your family or your teacher. Make a time to talk to them or video call them if you can’t meet them in person.

2. Next, think about how you are going to present your prototype to your audience. Are you going to do a presentation? Make a recording? If you would like to create a video, you can share it with the zoo later on.

3. After presenting your prototype, you should ask your audience questions like: Does my prototype solve the Challenge? Does my prototype work for the User? How could I improve my prototype?

Refine Your PrototypeImprove your prototype design.

A designer does not get it right the first time. They have to play with it and change their prototype so it can better solve the challenge.

What to do:Once you have received feedback during the Test stage, you should make improvements to your design. You can then re-test if you’d like to see if the improvements will work.Congratulations! You’ve completed the Design Thinking process!If you would like to share your design idea with Zoos Victoria, read the next activity.

Flipgrid will help you record a video of your prototype design. You have two options: Flipgrid website – use the camera on your laptop or computer Flipgrid’s app – use the camera on your phone or tablet

What to do:1. Ask your teacher and parent/guardian whether it’s OK for you to use Flipgrid. Decide whether you will be presenting in front of the camera or talking from behind the camera.

3. You can watch the videos already in the grid. If you want to share your design and record their own video, here’s what to do.

Click the green plus symbol to get started.

You will need to log in using your Google or Microsoft account. Check with your teacher if you’re not sure about which account you have got.

Tap the record button to start. If you are using a web browser, you made may need to enable Adobe Flash Player. You can add fun stickers, filters, text, and more. Or if you’ve already recorded your video, click on the ‘upload’ icon.

Review the video – trim, rearrange or add more video.

Take a thumbnail photo for the video. This could be a photo of your prototype.

Edit your name and video title. Then submit! You will get a confirmation email with a link to share with your class or family. You can also download your video.

You will receive an email when someone from the zoo has given you feedback on your design. Thanks for participating in the STEM Design Challenge!
