Syllabus, Instructional Analysis and GBPP English subject is one of some compulsory subjects in ITS, which have to be undertaken by the S1 (undergraduate level) students and D3 (diploma). Below is the syllabus, instructional analysis and GBPP of the English subject. A. Learning Objective: 1. The students are able to understand several concepts of reading strategies on science and technology texts. 2. The students are able to understand the content and context of texts/readings by implementing the introduced reading strategies. It is expected that they can both understand the given materials/readings and materials/readings that they select by their own, materials/readings that they may find during their first or second semester study in their own departments. 3. The students are capable to understand the grammar concept which becomes the convention of readings/texts structure. 4. They are able to understand vocabulary that they find in the text on science and technology. 1

Syllabus, Instructional Analysis and GBPP

English subject is one of some compulsory subjects in ITS, which have to be undertaken

by the S1 (undergraduate level) students and D3 (diploma).

Below is the syllabus, instructional analysis and GBPP of the English subject.

A. Learning Objective:

1. The students are able to understand several concepts of reading strategies on

science and technology texts.

2. The students are able to understand the content and context of texts/readings by

implementing the introduced reading strategies. It is expected that they can both

understand the given materials/readings and materials/readings that they select by

their own, materials/readings that they may find during their first or second

semester study in their own departments.

3. The students are capable to understand the grammar concept which becomes the

convention of readings/texts structure.

4. They are able to understand vocabulary that they find in the text on science and

technology.

B. Competency:

It is expected that the students are able to acquire comprehensive and integrative

competency on reading, which is indicated by being able to understand, interpret, retell,

develop the idea and concept on science and technology. This reading competency will

be supported by competency in the fundamental areas of vocabulary, grammar, writing

and speaking in class.

Those basic areas are:

The students are able to understand, interpret, retell the essence of the text on

science and technology by implementing the given reading strategies.

2. Grammar Competency:

The students are capable to understand the concept of grammar, identify the

correct form of grammar and implement the grammar in sentence, identify the

correct grammar in the text, and implement the correct grammar in their writing.

3. Vocabulary Competency:

The students are able to draw the meaning of specialized vocabulary in science

and technology by understanding the context within sentence level, paragraph

level and essay level as well as by knowing the meaning from the structure of the

vocabulary (word), such as the word ending, prefix, suffix.

5. Writing Competency:

The students are able to express their interpretation on text, by filling the gap in

guided composition, develop their idea on the content of the text through

paragraph or essay writing.

6. Speaking Competency:

The students are able to retell the content of the text and their writing in class. The

students participate actively in the classroom discussion.

Those competencies are divided into sub-competency below:

1. Understanding and identifying specific information through scanning, C1, C2, A1, P1

2. Understanding the content of the text by questioning and evaluating text, C2, C4, C6, A1, A3, P1

3. Understanding the characteristic of effective summary and are able to make summary based on the

examples, C2, A2, P3

4. identifying the structure of text, formulating the structure of text based on the text purpose, and

writing based on the example, C1,C3, A4, P4.

5. Connecting the content and context of the text to the students’ background knowledge, self

experience, and connecting one text to other text, C3, C4, A3, A4, P3

6. Identifying the main idea of the text through skimming and locating main idea, C1, A1, A3, P1, P3

7. Identifying, explaining, formulating and developing sentence with NClause, AdjClause, AdvClause,

C1, C2, A4, P3.

8. Finding the key words and jargon in the text, defining the key words and jargon in the text, and

writing those sentences in the new context, C1, C3, C4, A5, P4.

9. Completing the missing words/information in the text and connecting the information from one text to

other texts, C3, A4, P4.

10. Identifying grammar in the text, are able to explain the characteristics of each grammar, C1, C2, A2,

P1.

11. Writing views expression, responding to the text and presenting argument, C6, A4, P5.

12. Underlining contexts (clues) and listing the indication of the definition of the vocabulary in sentence

and making sentences by using those vocabularies, C2, A3, P3.

13. Comparing one context to the other contexts from the dimensions of the organizations of the text and

the purpose of the text, C6, A5, P3

14. Understanding the concept of fact and opinion and identifying/differing fact from opinion, C2, A2,

P1.

15. Identifying, selecting, considering/weighing and concluding elements/parts of grammar and

selecting which grammar part/element is required to understand the given texts C6, A5, P5

1. The students are able to understand and implement the concept of reading strategy on science and technology texts in English language.

2. The students are able to retell or rewrite the substance of text, capable to develop ideas or concepts that they read from the text, and become a critical reader who are able to evaluate the reliability, validity and clarity of the text.
