Do it nowThis term we are going to be studying the Shakespearean play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. In the space below, take five minutes to record everything you already know about Romeo and Juliet.

New knowledge: Is Romeo and Juliet based upon a true story?Romeo and Juliet originates from a tradition of tragic love stories. One of the earliest references to the names Montague and Capulet is from Dante’s Divine Comedy, who mentions the Montecchi (Montagues) and the Cappelletti (Capulets) in canto six of Purgatorio:

Come and see, you who are negligent,

Montagues and Capulets, Monaldi and Filippeschi

One lot already grieving, the other in fear.

History records the name of the family Montague as being lent to a political party in Verona, but that of the Capulets as from a Cremonese family, both of whom play out their conflict in Lombardy as a whole rather than within the confines of Verona. Allied to rival political factions, the parties are grieving because their endless warfare has led to the destruction of both parties, rather than a grief from the loss of their ill-fated offspring as the play sets forth. However, the legend states that a girl from one faction killed herself after her lover from the other faction was killed in the fighting. Everyone felt so sorry for her that she was buried in consecrated ground under the church, even though she committed suicide. Even today, in Verona, there are still the houses of the two families, nowadays of course called Romeo’s house and Juliet’s house with its famous balcony.

New knowledge: In this learning episode, we are going to begin watching a film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet by Baz Luhrmann (0.00-18.46). At the start of the play, we are introduced to the two warring families: the Montagues and the Capulets.

What do we learn about ‘Romeo and Juliet’ from the prologue?

Page 5: engteacherabroad.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewEveryone felt so sorry for her that she was buried in consecrated ground under the church, even though she committed suicide

ReflectionAt the start of the play, Romeo might have been considered a courtly lover. Courtly love was / is non-physical love; it is the worshipping of the lady in waiting.

Characteristics of the courtly lover:

Sighs and groans – wants to be alone Unkempt and dishevelled Can’t sleep Walks alone in the early hours Melancholy Courteous and chivalrous Gallant and brave Truthful – generous Defends his lady’s honour Noble and aristocratic

5

Page 6: engteacherabroad.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewEveryone felt so sorry for her that she was buried in consecrated ground under the church, even though she committed suicide

Secretive Writers poetry to / about the one desired Swears never-ending love Willing (eager?) to die for his mistress

One of the reasons for the lover’s melancholy is that his adoration of his mistress is not returned. An essential quality in this convention is that the mistress is unattainable, for whatever reasons. Unreturned love is termed unrequited love. Hence, the sighs and groans, the solitary wandering (to ponder over the problems faced by this) etc.

Key question: to what extent might we consider Romeo to be a courtly lover at the start of the play?

New knowledge: the sonnet11

Page 12: engteacherabroad.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewEveryone felt so sorry for her that she was buried in consecrated ground under the church, even though she committed suicide

A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines which follows a strict rhyme scheme of ABAB/CDCD/EFEF/GG. The word ‘sonnet’ derives form the Italian word ‘sonetto’ which means little poem / little song and are usually associated with love. The structure of a typical Italian sonnet of the time included two parts that together formed a compact form of argument. First the octave, which forms the proposition, describing a problem or question, followed by a sestet which proposes a resolution.

The sonnet that is used when Romeo and Juliet meet is unusual because it has two individual voices. Other than that it is a sonnet as it follows the correct rhyme scheme, rhythm and structure as a traditional Shakespearean sonnet.

Pen to paper: what do learn from the sonnet Romeo and Juliet perform when they first meet?

How does Mercutio react to Romeo’s refusal to fight Tybalt?

New knowledge: honourDuring Shakespeare’s time, plenty of people would have been armed. In fact, one of the marks of a gentleman was the right to carry a sword. Duels were a frequent occurrence. Duelling was seen as a way to settle an argument that men felt wasn’t negotiable. Duels were not supposed to be conducted in public and the intention was not to hurt or kill your opponent but to demonstrate that you were honourable enough to risk being hurt or killed yourself. If you were challenged to a duel, it would be expected for a man to take up the challenge and fight. This would be in order to protect their honour and the family name. A refusal to duel would mean the man would be viewed as a coward and their family honour would be depleted.

New knowledge: tracking the textIn this learning episode we are going to watch an extract (57.32-1.15.25) in which Tybalt, having recognised Romeo at the Capulet Ball challenges Romeo to a duel.

Why do you think Romeo says this?

How does the Friar respond to Romeo when he arrives to see him?

Imagine the Friar and the Nurse have a Facebook chat – what would their response to the events in this scene be?

ReflectionRomeo: loyal or reckless?

Some people might argue that Romeo acts in an incredibly loyal way to Juliet which demonstrates the strength of his love for her. Others, however, might suggest that Romeo is reckless. He puts a girl he has only just met before both his family and his best friend. What do you think? Should Romeo be commended for his loyalty or shunned for his reckless behaviour?

New knowledge: arranged marriagesDuring the Renaissance, when this play was set, marriages were arranged by the fathers of the young couple. Parents would desire for their child to marry within their class or above it. This is because parents could benefit from a marriage. Dowries, properties, political alignments might all appear as a result of an arranged marriage. In addition, a family’s social status could be improved as a result of marriage. Women were expected to obey their family’s wishes and go ahead with the marriage, regardless of their own personal feelings.

New knowledgeIn this learning episode we are going to see how Juliet responds when she is informed of her arranged marriage to Paris (1.15.25-1.35.15).
