14) Directions: Actively read (underline important information, circle vocabulary words) the paragraph below at least 4 times and use it to answer the questions below. (10 points)

Research InformationScientists believe that our climate is changing around the world. Winters are getting longer and summers are getting hotter. Places that normally have a lot of rainfall have droughts (long periods of time with little or no rain). Currently the state of California is experiencing a long drought which farmers fear will hurt their crops of strawberries, grapes, and other fruit. During the hot summers, more insects are eating the farmers’ plants so farmers are using chemicals called insecticides to spray the plants and kill the insects.

a) What is a drought?A drought is ________________________________________________________

b) Why do California farmers need to know about osmosis during a drought?

Because their plants will __________________ during a drought because ___________________.

c) Why do California farmers need to know about diffusion during a drought?

Because when they use __________________ the plants can ________________________________

d) Do you think it is important for farmers to study biology? Why or why not? Use an example from the paragraph to help you.

Yes it is important/no it’s not important because____________________________________________.

For example, farmers need to study how ___________________________________________________.

Visualizing information ( 6 points)

Paragraph: Farmers want to grow plants that can survive during a drought when there is little rain. Sometimes plant scientists cause mutations in plant genes so they will have a trait to help them survive during difficult conditions. Normal corn dies during a drought and if there are too many insects. Corn with genetic mutations can survive.

Directions: Use information from the paragraph to draw and label pictures of normal corn and corn with genetic mutations.. Include at least 1 structure and function in each picture.

Critiquing Reasoning

Genetic research is very expensive and water levels are decreasing. California farmers need to quickly decide what they should do. (12 points)

18) Directions: Read the farmers’ opinions below and explain whether you agree or disagree and why.

Farmer 1: We should continue growing normal corn because we can get more rain and the corn will live.Agree or disagree? Why?

Farmer 2: We should use corn with mutations because they can live in difficult conditions.Agree or disagree? Why?

Farmer 3: We should not grow corn, we should grow rice because people can eat rice and it is easy to grow.Agree or disagree? Why?

Farmer 4: We should stop growing corn and only grow potatoes because they use less water and that is better during a drought.Agree or disagree? Why?

Farmer 5: We should grow many different plants because if we have biodiversity different organisms can live together and share resources.Agree or disagree? Why?

Farmer 6: Water is a very big problem. We need to use plants that don’t need much water. If conditions don’t change plants that need a lot of water could go extinct.Agree or disagree? Why?
