A REMINDER ABOUT SCHOOL SECURITY

In order to make your visit to Winfield an enjoyable and safe experience, please remember the following procedures: Ring the bell once; face the camera and when asked, please state the reason you are coming into school and be sure to have a picture ID to present to the office. Once in the building, report directly to the front office to check-in. These procedures are in place to help ensure the safety of our students, staff and visitors. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

** Lunchroom Visitors ** Please be reminded of our policy concerning visitors to our cafeteria. Only a student’s parent/legal guardian is allowed to visit during lunchtime unless written permission from the parent/guardian is received by the school allowing others to do so. It is permissible for a note to be written permitting lunch visits for specific individuals for the entire school year. In addition, we continue to ask that siblings and other young children not accompany adult visitors during lunch. This policy has been put into effect due to safety concerns, space limitations, and the need for appropriate supervision of our young visitors. You can view the school lunch menu on the Carroll County Website at: https://www.carrollk12.org/admin/financeservices/foodservices/Pages/SchoolMenus.aspx

ECSN NEWS Wow! We cannot believe that we are halfway through the school year. We have been working on appropriately interacting with peers within group settings (i.e. to request a toy, to ask for a turn, to give an item). In February, we will continue working on fine motor, early literacy, math literacy, and pre-writing skills in one on one, small group, and whole group settings. Our themes for February: Ramps, Valentine’s Day, and Transportation. Please feel free to reach out with any questions and/or concerns!

Kindergarten In February, students will learn various strategies for reading unknown words. We have already taught strategies such as “get your mouth ready” and “look at the picture” to read these unknown words. Another strategy often overlooked is, “what makes sense” in the sentence or story. Students often get overwhelmed with the actual process of reading and forget the meaning of the book. These unknown words can be read by thinking of words related to the theme of the book.

Page 7: €¦  · Web viewEncourage your child to listen to stories, talk about the pictures, practice touching each word while reading, answer questions about the story, hold books, find

In phonemic awareness, we will continue to blend and segment words. The children will also learn to manipulate sounds and delete sounds to make new words.

As we begin our Unit 3 in math, students will learn about teen numbers and explore the beginnings of place value. Children will learn to count, identify, order and write numerals 0-20. We will use various tools to practice these skills such as ten frames, rekenreks, number paths and various manipulatives. Fact fluency will include adding and subtracting one and zero to a teen numeral. Please continue to practice Dream box and math facts at home. We will celebrate the 100 th Day of School on February 12, 2020.

This month we will complete our winter weather and severe weather study followed by lessons on the U.S. Presidents. February is a great time to remember kindness and share various acts of kindness. We look forward to observing these acts.

1st Grade

First graders continue to expand their understanding and knowledge of word structures. We recently finished a unit on consonant and digraph blends and are moving into a unit where we will develop an understanding of the concept of a closed syllable. During the month of February, we will learn how to read words with five sounds as well as words that have a vowel-consonant-silent e pattern.

As Readers, first grade students continue to grow their reading gardens by increasing their sight word mastery and decoding skills. Please continue to encourage your child to practice sight words and the Reading Fluency practice pages often. During our whole group and small group lessons, we are expanding our understanding of text structures and how we can use this knowledge to demonstrate our understanding. Retelling, both fiction and nonfiction text is a critical skill and we continue to work toward refining. In Writing, we are finishing up our personal narratives about our winter break. Then, we will be moving into our third quarter writing projects. This will include a report and an opinion piece. Parents, please keep a look out for some exciting information about a book publishing project to be coming home in February. Your child will become a published author this year! In Math, students worked hard to take their January Benchmarks. We are proud of their effort. In Unit 3, we will be building on our understanding of place value. Our new learning will focus on adding within 100! This includes adding a two-digit number and one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and multiple of 10. Students will understand that we add tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes compose a new ten. We also will subtract multiples of ten. In Science, we will continue to learn about animals and animal heredity. We will complete a culminating project of creating a hybrid animal that can survive in two different habitats. We will then begin our Social Studies unit on Maps. Your child will get to create and mail out their own Flat Stanley to travel to a different part of the state, country, or world.

2nd Grade

In Math, we will be working on Unit 3. This unit builds critical knowledge in the understanding of the base-ten numeration system and place-value concepts. This includes ideas of counting in units of fives, tens and multiples of hundreds, tens and ones as well as a grasp of number relationships, which they demonstrate in a variety of ways, including comparing and ordering numbers. They understand multi-digit numbers in terms of place-value and recognizing that place-value notation is shorthand for representing amounts of hundreds, tens and ones. Please remember to assist your child in practicing their basic facts using the Playground Facts. All addition and subtraction facts need to be mastered by the end of second grade.

In Social Studies, we are beginning our unit, “The World around Me”. This unit involves learning the ways people of different ages and/or cultural backgrounds can respect and help to pass on traditions and customs. We will learn how

Page 8: €¦  · Web viewEncourage your child to listen to stories, talk about the pictures, practice touching each word while reading, answer questions about the story, hold books, find

families in the community share and borrow customs and traditions from other cultures. Also, included in this unit are identifying the purpose of globes, maps, and atlases. We will identify map elements and locate places in the United States. We will identify the equator, poles, seven continents, four oceans, and countries using maps and a globe. Lastly, we will classify regions using climate, vegetation, animal life, and natural/physical features. We will make connections to our previous unit by identifying if these regions are urban or rural. When we finish this unit, we will move on to Science and continue our investigations.

In ELA, The Second Graders will be reading informational stories and using the text features to help them better understand the text. They will also be identifying the main idea and details. The students will be reading some fiction stories as well and identifying the story elements. In word study, the students will be learning a new syllable, r- control, as they continue to apply what they have learned so far. The students will be applying what they learned about informational stories in reading to their writing. The students will choose an animal to research and write an informational piece with text features.

We are in need of supplies! We are low on pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, and tissues. We appreciate any donations!

3rd GradeSocial Studies

Students wrapped up the Economics Unit. We will revisit these ideas and concepts again in the spring when we begin to prepare for our Econ Fair held in late May. Students will shift back to the Wonders (McGraw Hill) leveled readers to focus instruction on theme in narrative text. Encourage students to log on the Clever to access these wonderful websites.

Along with the second marking period report card, your child will receive a printout from Ms. Ehmann (reading specialist) stating your child’s current level of performance in reading. Please take time to review this handout to see how your child is performing on grade level assessments.

Math

-Third grade ended January with a bang by completing the mid-year benchmark assessment. Be on the lookout for a letter indicating your child’s progress on this assessment.

-We will complete Unit 4 -“Multiplication and Division” in the beginning of February. This unit focuses on applying the knowledge gained in our first unit in one and two step word problems. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts.

-By mid-February, we will begin Unit 5- “Equivalence and Comparing Fractions.” Students will extend their knowledge of fractions by comparing and identifying equivalent fractions. A detailed letter about this unit will be coming home for your review.

Science

-Students will be exploring force and motion in Science. We will be experimenting with balanced and unbalanced forces as well as forces of gravity.

4th GradeIn Humanities, students are continuing to learn about Maryland’s history in colonial times.

Page 9: €¦  · Web viewEncourage your child to listen to stories, talk about the pictures, practice touching each word while reading, answer questions about the story, hold books, find

During Writing, students will work on opinion writing.

In Reading, students are focusing on understanding the author’s point of view.

In Math, students continue to work with fraction concepts. This unit we are focusing on the connection between fractions and decimals.

In Science, we are wrapping up our energy unit.

5th GradeDuring the month of February, we will be focusing on our Revolutionary War unit. Please be sure to review the parent letter that went home. This outlines all the topics that will be covered in addition to the vocabulary words that will be used throughout the unit.

In Reading, we will continue to read Chains as part of our novel study. Students will be working to throughout each chapter to identify and describe: character reactions and interactions, figurative language, character analysis, summarizing, theme, comparing and contrasting, and plot.

In Math, we will finish our division unit and begin our adding and subtracting fractions unit. In this fraction unit, we will be adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

Thank you for your continued support at home.

Our most recent pep rally was held on January 31st where we discussed the importance of kindness. Please see picture below that was distributed to all students. We encouraged all of them to color the page (which can be done at home or at school) and will be displayed during kindness week in April. Kindness Club continues to meet the last Wednesday of each month at 8:30 AM. They are currently working to make scarves that will be donated to a local shelter or charity. Please remember to use your home ROAR tickets and send them into school with your child for the chance to be recognized on the morning announcements. We love to hear about ROAR behavior in and outside of the school building.

Gifted and Talented Program Information

When students are screened for gifted and talented intervention, outstanding academic ability and certain characteristics and thought processes are observed and documented. Teachers look for students who possess a wealth of information about selected topics and/or are able to grasp information quickly and remember it with little practice. They observe students who are able to understand general concepts and make abstractions and connections between seemingly unrelated topics and ideas. If a student possesses some or all of these abilities, he or she can be screened for identification.

Components of the Gifted and Talented Education Program Individual Student Profile. All data in each of the following areas are rated as strong, moderate or weak evidence that gifted and talented services are needed or appropriate.

Multiple Data Points Teacher Observation Checklist – includes characteristics of gifted students Parent/Guardian Observation Checklist – includes characteristics of gifted students as seen by parent Primary Thinking Skills (PTS) Individual Checklist – includes data from second grade thinking skills instruction Content Specific Checklist – observations from teachers on content specific behaviors of gifted students Production Data – work samples provided by teacher and/or parent Cognitive Ability Test – aptitude test given to all second grade students
