SEEING Discuss importance of sight, blindness optician, wearing spectacles, eye parts (eyebrow, eyelash, eyelid pupil, iris, tear duct). Sight display including hand lens, binoculars, kaleidoscope, colour paddles, colour prism, mirrors, bauble, tinsel etc.Read Anna's Amazing Multi-coloured glasses' by Wendy Body – chn. make glasses with card & different coloured acetate.

HEARING Discuss various sounds (loud, quiet, silence). How some sounds alert us to danger. Sounds of musical instruments (display), animal sounds, sounds they hear inside/outside school.Read ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear what do you hear?’Go on a ‘sound walk’ – draw pictures of what they heard. Make into a class book.

SMELLING Discuss nice/horrible smells, how smells can warn us of danger, emphasise the need for safety when smelling things; colds hinder sense of smell. Game to identify certain smells. Display of smell pots.Record smells they like/dislike (cut & stick)

TASTING Emphasise the importance of never tasting something they come across, discuss tastes they like/dislike, food from other cultures etc.Look at friend’s tongue with hand lens – discuss taste buds. Taste 4 foods (sweet, sour, bitter, salty). Record happy/sad face.

TOUCHING Discuss variety of textures e.g. smooth, rough, spiky hard, soft, sticky etc. Display & feely bag. Encourage the children to describe what they feel inventing their own made up words.

Give chn 4 different textures (soft, bumpy, smooth rough) to sort. (Record on teddy sheet)soft – cotton woolbumpy – corrugated cardsmooth – silver cardrough - sandpaper) ‘Slug paint’. Drop a ‘dollop’ of black finger paint onto palm of hand (ask first if they want to do this). Pretend it’s a slug. Stroke it – describe. Emphasise it’s only paint & we can squash it, rub hands together, make hand prints, spread it all over the paper – use fingers to make slug trails/names etc. Take monoprints of ‘trails’. Tape or scribe the rich language used. Display cut-out slugs with poem, silver trails & children’s adjectives.

JELLY – make jelly & use all 5 senses to explore (record findings)

Children colour picture with felt pens & cut out. Decorate reverse side with collage materials e.g. feathers, sequins

To suspend them make a cross frame by using 3 laminating sheets stuck together – put through laminator so that it forms a thick see- through sheet. Cut into strips lengthways. Make a cross with 2 strips & staple in middle. Attach 4 pictures to each end. Suspend above ‘Babies’ Nursery’.
