English I Honors A Raisin in the Sun Annotation Journal
Making Annotations: A User’s Guide As you work with your text, consider all of the ways that you can connect with what you are reading. Here are some suggestions that will help you with your annotations:
Define words or slang; make the words real with examples from your experiences; explore why the author would have used a particular word or phrase.
Text to World – How does this relate to something else in my life – family, community, etc.? Text to Self – How does this relate to me?
Make connections to other parts of the book. Feel free to use direct quotes from the book. Make connections to other texts you have read or seen, including:
Movies Comic books/graphic novels News events Other books, stories, plays, songs, or poems
Draw a picture when a visual connection is appropriate. Re-write, paraphrase, or summarize a particularly difficult passage or moment. Describe a new perspective you may now have. Explain the historical context or traditions/social customs that are used in the passage. Point out and discuss literary techniques that the author is using. Ask questions
About the characters About the plot and how the author will unfold the narrative to you About information you don’t understand
Make inferences Writers often give you hints or clues that help you “read between the lines”
Evaluate and Judge What is the author’s thematic purpose? What is the main idea? What do you agree or disagree with? What ideas of yours had the work changed or confirmed?
Important Moments to Annotate Contrasts and Contradictions
When the character or plot does something unexpected
Aha Moments When the character realizes or understands something
Tough Questions When the character pauses to ask himself or a friend a tough question
Words of the Wiser When a wise character shares his understanding or advice
Again and Again When you see repetition in a story
Memory Moment When a character shares a moment of the past
