Coronavirus Work May 1 (4 th May- 17 th May) Maths Continue to go over the numbers 1-99 (1 st class) and 1-199 (2 nd class). Skip Counting in: 10s, 2s, 5s. Estimating how many numbers are in a set (example: how many lego bricks are on the table?) Revision of tens and units (hundreds, tens and units for 2 nd class). Week 1 and 2: Time: This is a very important topic for the children to learn. Not only will it help them later in their schooling but it’s also an important life skill. If the children can grasp the concept of time early on, it will make things a lot easier down the line. Time can be a tough topic for the children to grasp so I’ve scheduled the next 2 weeks to be dedicated to telling time. The children can move at their own pace with the topic. I’ve highlighted the first class work in yellow and the second class work in turquoise. I’ve put some activities down below but when it comes to learning about time, the best resource is a good analogue clock/watch.

Coronavirus Work May 1 (4th May- 17th May) Maths

Continue to go over the numbers 1-99 (1st class) and 1-199 (2nd class).

Skip Counting in: 10s, 2s, 5s.

Estimating how many numbers are in a set (example: how many lego bricks are on the table?)

Revision of tens and units (hundreds, tens and units for 2nd class).

Week 1 and 2: Time:

This is a very important topic for the children to learn.

In first class the children need to be able to do the following in relation to time:

-Sequence events (what came first, second third etc.)

-Know the months of the year

-Read the hours and half hours on an analogue clock.

In second class the children need to be able to do the following in relation to time:

-Sequence events (what came first, second third etc.)

-Know the months of the year

-Read the day, date and month on a calendar

-Read the hours, half hours and quarter hours on an analogue clock

-Read the hours and half hours on a digital clock.

First Class Work:

Activity 1 in the maths section of May work (based on days of the week). If you cannot print the days of the week, get the children to write the days of the week (available in activity 1), cut them out and place them in order.

Activity 2 in the maths section of May work (based on ordinal numbers, 1st 2nd, 3rd etc.). If you cannot print the sheet, get the children to draw the ice cream and follow the instructions.

Activity 3 in the maths section of May work (blank clocks). Get the children to draw the hands on the clocks for times of their choice (1 o clock, 2 o clock, 3 o clock etc.) They can also write times for (half past 1, half past 2 etc.) Focus on the minute hand being longer than the hour hand. If you cannot print the clocks you can draw some for the children (or they can draw them themselves if they are able.)

Activity 4 in the maths section of the May work (months of the year). The children can practice writing the months of the year.

Oral questions about the months of the year: Get the children to list the months of the year, in order. Then ask questions like, “what month comes after February?” “What month comes before December?”

*Alternative activities could be to simply get the clock down off the wall and get the children to move the hands to show you 1 O’ Clock, 2 O’ clock, Half past 3, half past 4 etc. They can also have a look at the calendar for the months of the year activities. As long as the children can do the following you can adapt any of the above activities:

-Sequence events (what came first, second third etc.)

-Know the months of the year

-Read the hours and half hours on an analogue clock.

Second Class work:

Activity 2 in the maths section of May work (based on ordinal numbers, 1st 2nd, 3rd etc.). If you cannot print the sheet, get the children to draw the ice cream and follow the instructions.

Activity 4 in the maths section of the May work (based on the months of the year). The children can practice writing the months of the year.

Oral questions about the months of the year: Get the children to list the months of the year, in order. Then ask questions like, “what month comes after February?” “What month comes before December?”

Activity 5 in the maths section of the May work (based on the calendar). The children have to answer questions based on February 2019.

Activity 3 in the maths section of May work (blank clocks). Get the children to draw the hands on the clocks for times of their choice (1 o clock, 2 o clock, 3 o clock etc.) They can also write times for (half past 1, half past 2 etc.) They may need some help on the “quarter past” and “quarter to” times they want to write. Focus on the minute hand being longer than the hour hand. If you cannot print the clocks you can draw some for the children (or they can draw them themselves if they are able.)

Activity 6 in the maths section of the May work (Powerpoint). This is a powerpoint based on “a quarter to” and “a quarter past.” Once the children have viewed the powerpoint, they can try the activities at the bottom of this document *Telling the time.

Activity 7 in the maths section of the May work. (Digital time 1). This activity focuses on writing digital time on the hour (1 o clock, 2 o clock etc.) It includes an answer sheet.

Activity 8 in the maths section of the May work. (Digital time 2). This activity focuses on writing digital time for half past the hour (half past 1, half past 2 etc.)

*Alternative activities could be to simply get the clock down off the wall and get the children to move the hands to show you 1 O’ Clock, 2 O’ clock, Half past 3, half past 4, quarter to 9, quarter past ten etc. They can also have a look at the calendar for the months of the year activities. A lot of electronic devices use digital clocks so the children should try to identify when the digital clock hits the hour and the half past the hour point. As long as the children can do the following you can adapt any of the above activities:

-Sequence events (what came first, second third etc.)

-Know the months of the year

-Read the day, date and month on a calendar

-Read the hours, half hours and quarter hours on an analogue clock

-Read the hours and half hours on a digital clock.
