Iowa and New Hampshire
These states are the first two to hold Presidential caucuses (Iowa) and primaries (New Hampshire). Because of this, a lot of attention, money, and time is focused on these states. Given demographic information, is this appropriate?
Young vs. Old
Consider the following chart:
Pick 3 states and examine age data. Given the chart, predict how citizens vote for these states and which of the two parties (Republicans and Democrats) are likely in power?
Gender and Race
Now consider this chart:
Consider the same 3 states that you did for Young vs. Old. Given the chart, should you modify your answers regarding voting behavior?
California vs.Other States
Consider the demographics of California (excluding basic population size- we all know California has a lot of people!). Then, pick 2 other states from around the country to review. In a paragraph, compare and contrast what you find. What do your findings mean, in terms of government and politics, for these states?
Texas- Change Over Time?
It is often said that Texas is an unusual place- after all, everything is bigger in Texas! Texas is also classically a very conservative and Republican state. Consider, however, the demographic information for this state. Predict what Texas politics will be like in the year 2040.
Conclusions
What do you take away from this project? What is worthy of talking about around the dinner table (or car, in front of the TV...)? Write up a short paragraph that shows your understanding of the importance of demographics when considering politics and government.
