Class 4: Contour Line Drawing, Organically Growing Shoe Composition, Spatial Line Continue working WITH CONTOUR LINE ONLY, NO SHADING to describe volume and mass Start with one shoe, anywhere on the Page. Draw the contour for 10 min. Draw another controur of new shoe or the same shoe from a different angle on same page. Keep building up the “field” by adding more and more contours. Try to have some overlap and see how much of the paper you can cover. We’ll do 8 different contours, 10 min. each. Tips for an Organic Composition: -Build the composition by responding to what is happening in your drawing already

Class 4: Contour Line Drawing, Organically Growing Shoe Composition, Spatial Line

Continue working WITH CONTOUR LINE ONLY, NO SHADING to describe volume and massStart with one shoe, anywhere on the Page. Draw the contour for 10 min.

Draw another controur of new shoe or the same shoe from a different angle on same page.

Keep building up the “field” by adding more and more contours. Try to have some overlap and see how much of the paper you can cover. We’ll do 8 different contours, 10 min. each.

Tips for an Organic Composition:

-Build the composition by responding to what is happening in your drawing already-Avoid concentrating everything in the center of the page; use the entire page to compose.-Move the viewer’s eye all around the drawing-Play with drawing from different angles, changing scale, and using thickness/thinness of line to create interest

Now you are ready to develop your drawing base on a focal point and/or an idea for your composition. You might use the following compositional themes/ideas:

ExplodingContracting

Crescendo/buildingDisintegration

Floating/ spreadingGravity

Motion/ ghost image

Use graphite sticks to draw thicker lines will make those lines come forward and sit on top.

Use the kneaded eraser to pass through other lines will make those lines go back in space. Aim for a good range of light medium and thick lines.

Depending on what your idea is and what it requires, you might spend the rest of the time on one contour or you might do lots of quick ones.
