CARLTON C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2019 Education Evening This was a very well attended event and we have received lots of useful and positive feedback which will be used to inform future events. Our grateful thanks go to the PTFA for providing refreshments. Parents welcomed the opportunity to meet the staff and find out about arrangements in each class as well as looking at the Early Years Curriculum, ideas on how to help your child at home. We are delighted with the extremely high number of pupils in years 2 to 6 who are now successfully registered on ‘Maths with Parents’ an online resource to support parents and pupils with maths concepts and to reinforce work in school. Thanks to Miss Wade who helped some parents having difficulty logging on to register. Maths with Parents is an excellent online maths resource for pupils in Y2-6, which school funds. It contains maths videos demonstrating maths methods/strategies used in school and follow up activities for parents/carers and their children to do together reinforcing math’s everyday purpose as well as giving the children the opportunity to apply their maths learning in a variety of contexts. Videos are updated regularly, watching these and undertaking the activities form part of the maths homework for children in Y2 to Y6. If you have not already registered please can you do so at www.mathswithparents.com Parents felt there was not enough information on e-safety. Y4 and Y6 will be attending E-safety shows during the course of the year. We would like to reinforce and remind parents of the link on our website to Hector’s World and further activities and information on E-safety are available online at https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk . All parents should have received the curriculum leaflets which give an overview of what your child is being taught this term, along with ideas for you to support their learning at home. If you did not receive your leaflet, please get in touch with your child’s class teacher or download a copy from the website. Curriculum development is one of the school priorities this year and we will be providing you with more information in the not too distant future. Further information about the curriculum can be found on the school website: www.carltonprimary.ik.org . ROBO BUILDING WORKSHOPS Children in years 1 to 6 enjoyed a 2 hour workshop where they had the opportunity to design, build and program a robot. The provider commented on the excellent attitude to learning, perseverance and achievement of the children throughout the school, with special mention of our year 6s having exceptional cooperating and teamwork skills. The children had a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable time and we have booked different workshops with this provider for next year.

Council. Monies raised to buy new books for our library came to £65. We hope to have further events such as these. Thank you to all the children who gave up their precious book/s. School SportsY5/6 Tag Rugby and Y3/4 Multi skills competitions were attended and enjoyed by all. Our Y3/4 children were given the ‘Teamwork’ award in Goal Ball, Tag Rugby and Orienteering – a fabulous

achievement! Well done to all our pupils – we are very proud of you! Thanks to the parents who kindly give up their time to accompany our teams to out-of-school events.

UNILEVER VISIT We were fortunate to have a large group of scientists from Unilever come to paint sheds, Wendy House, outside classroom, sandpit and canopy for 2 1/2 hours in half term. They got through a prodigious amount of work. Thanks to Mrs Judge for organising this event which should increase the life of our outdoor

buildings and really smartens up our outdoor equipment. Thanks to those parents who also worked hard to make this happen.

National Poetry DayChildren celebrated National Poetry Day in classes and with an extended assembly where all children got to perform a poem to the whole school. Owls had a Poetry Slam with the winners performing their chosen poem and bringing the celebration to an end (eventually) with ‘I Know a Song That Never Ends’!

Harvest FestivalOnce again the School Eco Council chose to support The Bedford Food Bank who collected our generous donations of food and cleaning products straight after the collective worship. Thank you to Rev Jaq and Rev Lynne for attending. It was so lovely to see so many parents enjoying the children’s heart-warming performances. Railway SafetyWoodpeckers and Owls classes took part in an interactive lesson on railway safety, including a quiz to check learning. The message to stay away from the railway lines and use level crossings carefully had an impact and was well-received by the children.

Values Please visit the following link on the website where you will find information on values in our school http://www.carltonprimary.ik.org/Values.htmlOur value for November will be Peace and December will be Care and Compassion. Please let school know of examples at home when your children have displayed good values. We hold an Awards Assembly every Thursday and children are invited to bring in and share achievements from home, so we can celebrate these alongside school awards.

Dinner Money – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 onlyDinner money from September is £2.10 per day, £10.50 per week or £81.90 for the half term; cheques payable to CATERLINK. Dinner money MUST BE SENT IN ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK. Many thanks for your co-operation. We spend a lot of time chasing non-payment and ask you to please pay in advance as the office staff are extremely busy. We don’t want to hand over to Caterlink as they take a much stricter line than we do. Thank you to those who pay in advance. Please send all payments into school in a sealed, labelled envelope, recycled is fine.
