ATOMIC BOMB

For the United States, the Atomic bomb starts with this guy. Albert Einstein is born in Germany. A longtime pacifist and a Jew. A month before Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany; Einstein made the decision to immigrate to the United States. He would never again enter the country of his birth.

This is a copy of the unsolicited letter Einstein sends to FDR informing him of some research being conducted by some Einstein colleagues. This gets the ball rolling.

The Manhattan project is the code name for the new secret bomb project.

Physicist Robert Oppenheimer is put in charge to develop the atomic bomb.

The project is very secret and on a need to know basis. The United States develops secret labs, even a secret city to work on the bomb.

It begins with Enrico Fermi developing the Nuclear reaction.

Plutonium is developed in Hanford, Washington.

Oak Ridge is a secret city built in the hills of Tennessee in 1942. The closest city is Knoxville. Hundreds of scientists worked here to develop the atomic bomb.

To this day Oak Ridge is the home for the United States nuclear regulatory agency.

Los Alamos, New Mexico is recognized as the development and creation place of the atomic bomb

Now

This is the first bomb. The one they test

FDR dies in in April of 1945. He is sitting in a chair having a portrait painted in Warm Springs Georgia at what they referred to as the Little White House.

FDR suddenly complained of a terrific pain in the back of my head and collapsed unconscious. He dies from a massive cerebral hemorrhage (uncontrolled bleeding in the brain).

Vice President Harry Truman is sworn in and assumes the office of President. It is then that Truman learns of the Manhattan Project for the first time (need to know).

The United States exploded its first atomic bomb early on the morning of July 16, 1945 at the desert test site known as Trinity in Alamogordo, New Mexico. This initial test was the culmination of years of scientific research Manhattan Project.

Truman issues the Potsdam Declaration. Gets no response from Japan

There has always been lots of controversy on why Truman dropped the bomb. Could there have been a better way to end the war without as much suffering?

Truman did not want to continue the journey from island to island battling to invade Japan because he did not want to waste more money on weapons and did not want to lose more American lives.

Truman wanted to end the war in the quickest way possible. The Japanese were very dedicated to their country and were all prepared to fight to their death.

Truman knew he needed a big impact on Japan that would be too big to ignore. By dropping the atomic bomb, it would wipe out thousands of Japanese people in a matter of seconds. The damage that the atomic bomb caused would have been too huge for the Japanese Government to not take any action on. Therefore forcing the Japanese to surrender.

21 days after the initial bomb test. Truman gives the order to drop an atomic bomb on Japan.

There were many who wanted to bomb Tokyo and wipe out Japan.

Truman choose military targets so Japan would have a chance to recover after the war.

The Hiroshima bomb was called ‘Little Boy’.

The second bomb in Nagasaki was called ‘Fat Man’.

These atomic bombs were designed by the world’s finest scientists at the time and had 50 times the explosive power of a normal bomb. The force of the bomb was estimated to be equivalent to 67 million sticks of dynamite.

Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of “a new and most cruel bomb.”

The official form surrender takes place on September 2, 1945
