It is not often that one week has two special days in it.Monday, May 4, was Star Wars Day. May the force be with you! Of course, this coming Sunday, May 10, is Mother's Day. Have you thought about how to celebrate this special day with your mom or a special person in your life? Will you make them a nice card, give them breakfast in bed, or maybe do a chore without being asked, like clean up your room?Whatever you do, we would love to hear about it. Please remember that our LST activities are not mandatory. We work with 110 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 with diverse abilities. We are trying to provide a range of activities and resources for families to explore and participate in at home, should they choose to do so. Everyone has lots going on at home and are doing their best to juggle family life, working and school. Some students may have enough work from their classroom teacher and may choose not to participate. Other students may choose to do one activity a week or just practice their reading on Raz-Kids. Others may find it manageable to do one activity a day, while others may decide to tackle a number of activities. Please do what works for you.

Beginning Readers: Exploring Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) Words – Short “a” – “ap” and “ag” on SPELLINGCITY

For beginning readers, there is a list of CVC words from the “ap” word family, a list of words from the “ag” word family, and a list of words from the “ap” and “ag” word families combined.

For our intermediate readers, Rewards Level 2 Lessons 4, 5, and 6 practice long vowel ‘ee’, ‘ea’ and ‘ee/ea’ combined words. Rewards Level 3 Lessons 5, 6, and 7 practice dipthong ‘oi’, ‘oy’ and ‘oi/oy’ combined words.

Task #15: WRITING ACTIVITY #1 – Spiders

Some of you have been reading about spiders by participating in our National Geographic Kids Spider story and/ or checking out the Scholastic video in Task #14. Spiders are strange looking, fascinating creatures that live everywhere in the world.

For primary students:

Think about what it would be like to be a spider for a day. Write one or two sentences about what you would do. Your first sentence could start like this: If I was a spider I would......Write in full sentences. Draw a picture of your writing.

For intermediate students:Some people have very strong feelings about spiders. People who are extremely afraid of spiders suffer from arachnophobia. Why are some people afraid of spiders? Why do spiders appear so often in horror movies? Are you afraid of spiders?Write a 5 sentence paragraph and give 3 ideas about why you think people are afraid of spiders or write about why you are or are not afraid of spiders. Use a topic sentence to introduce your ideas and write in full sentences. For each idea, please add interesting details and descriptive words. Finally, write a concluding sentence that summarizes what you are writing about.

Tip: If you are stuck on a word, try to stretch out the sounds by yourself.

Task #16: WRITING ACTIVITY #2 – Earth Day and My Community Environment – Part 2

Last week you were invited to create a map of your neighbourhood or community using paper & a pencil or MineCraft. You will need your map to do this week’s writing activity.

Ask Questions:Once you’ve mapped your community, start asking questions to guide your writing!· Is my community wildlife friendly?· How many green spaces do we have? Is that enough?· Does my school compost?· Do all the people have what they need?· Are there places for homeless people to go?· Are our natural spaces respected?· Do I consume anything that harms people, animals, and/or the environment?· Are there enough pollinators (Bees, insects, birds, etc.)· Where can people buy sustainable, and healthy food?· Are there animals/habitats missing? (May involve research!)· How can I/we be more compassionate?· Are our people respected?

Your Assignment:

The goal is to understand what people and animals are in your community and how they are using it. Look at your map. What environmental issues do you notice? What do you think you’d like to do to take action and help solve some of these problems?

For Primary students:Write 1-2 sentences about your community environment. What problem do you notice and what can you do to help?

For Intermediate students:Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph with 3-4 ideas about some of your observations about your neighbourhood/ community or some of the issues you notice in your community environment. Make sure to include opening and concluding sentences, like you’ve been taught in LST/class.

Proofread it for spelling mistakes and punctuation before you send it to your LST contact teacher.

TIP: If you are stuck on a word, try to stretch out the sounds by yourself.

You can do this workout indoors or outside. You just need to clear some space in your house so you have room to work out.

To start:a. Do the Frog Jump movement for 45 seconds. b. Then rest for 15 seconds.c. Do the Bear Walk movement for 45 seconds. d. Then rest for 15 seconds.e. Do the Gorilla Shuffle movement for 45 seconds. f. Then rest for 15 seconds.g. Do the Starfish Jumps movement for 45 seconds. h. Then rest for 15 seconds.i. Do the Cheetah Run movement for 45 seconds. j. Then rest for 15 seconds.k. Do the Crab Walk movement for 45 seconds. l. Then rest for 15 seconds.m. Do the Elephant Stomp movement for 45 seconds. n. Then rest for 15 seconds.

The whole workout should take you 7 minutes. You can take a 1-2 minute(s) break and repeat it again for up to 2-3 more times if you're feeling good. 🙂
