THE GATHERINGIntroit Hymn (NEH 339) – All stand as the choir and ministers enter the church

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,Be all else but naught to me, save that thou art,be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true wordbe thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord,be thou my great Father, and I thy true son,be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight,be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might,be thou my soul's shelter, be thou my strong tower,o raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,be thou my inheritance now and always,be thou and thou only the first in my heart,o sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun,O grant me its joys after vict’ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORDOld Testament Reading – Genesis 15:1-6

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” 4 But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” 5 He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness.

At the end the reader saysThis is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

New Testament Reading – Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.”13 All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, 14 for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.At the end the reader says This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn (NEH 408) – All Stand

Love divine, all loves excelling,Joy of heaven to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown.Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art;visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive;suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave.Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be;let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, til we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Charles Wesley (1707-88)

Gospel Reading – Luke 12:32-40

When the Gospel is announced the reader says Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

All Glory to you, O Lord.

32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth

destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.35 “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.39 “But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Offertory Hymn

How deep the Father's love for us,How vast beyond all measure,That He should give His only SonTo make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss,The Father turns His face away,As wounds which mar the Chosen OneBring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross,My sin upon His shoulders;Ashamed, I hear my mocking voiceCall out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life -I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything,No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ,His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward?I cannot give an answer,But this I know with all my heart,His wounds have paid my ransom

1995 Kingsway’s Thankyou Music

The gifts of the people are gathered and presented. The table is prepared, and bread and wine are placed upon it.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All All things come from you,and of your own do we give you.

The Lord’s PrayerLet us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;thy kingdom come;thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.Amen.

RefrainBroken for me, broken for you,The body of Jesus, broken for you.

He offered His body, He poured out His soul;Jesus was broken, that we might be whole.

Come to My table and with Me dine;Eat of My bread and drink of My wine.

This is My body given for you;Eat it remembering I died for you.

and any tickets purchased by next Sunday (18th August) will be at the bargain price of just £11.16-25 November 2020 - Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Fr Joseph and Fr Steve Gayle

It is always very moving to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, there is so much to see and experience and learn together. St Jerome said: 'Five gospels record the life of Jesus. Four you will find in books and the one you will find in the land they call Holy. Read the fifth gospel and the world of the four will open to you.' We invite you to come and know this for yourselves whether you are new to the Holy Land or have been many times before; there are always new sights and sounds to reflect upon. Reading the gospels will never be the same again and by visiting the Holy Land we are standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters there too. To have the chance to meet the 'living stones', the local Palestinian and Israeli Christians who are the ongoing, living church in the region, is humbling. Our pilgrimage will include the sites where the most important events in Our Lord's life and ministry took place: in Jerusalem and the surrounding area and further north in Galilee. We hope that if you have never been on. pilgrimage to the Holy Land before you will choose to join us and, if you have been before, we welcome you back. Our journey is a life changing as well as faith changing experience.

We invite you to journey with us and to share in this great opportunity to see those places we read of in the Scriptures.

Brochure and booking form available in church.

Please do reserve your place early in order to avoid disappointment.
