SCHEDULE: Saturday, August 3, 2013 During a distinguished military career with The United States Army Field Band of Washington D.C., Tenor Joel Dulyea traveled the world with the Soldiers’ Chorus singing public concerts for the Office of the Secretary of the Army. The Chorus performed as guest artists with many regional orchestras plus the renowned Boston Pops, National Symphony Orchestra and The London Symphony Orchestra. The Chorus became a favorite of Maestro Eric Kunzel who invited them to perform with the Cincinnati Pops, The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and for television broadcasts of The National Memorial Day Tribute from Washington D.C. Dulyea frequently was featured as a soloist in formal concerts. His undergraduate work was completed at Hope College and his Master of Music degree is from Western Michigan University. Additional conducting studies were completed under Herbert Butler, Kenneth Schermerhorn, and Robert Shaw. Mr. Wikman started his teaching career at Reeths-Puffer High School where he formed the Madrigal Singers. He went on to head the choral program at Muskegon High School for 28 years. During his tenure at Muskegon High, he led the Madrigalians in two well-received European tours. In addition, he compiled a record of first division performances in choral and ensemble festivals. Wikman formed the Muskegon Chamber Choir in 1963. He brought the Chamber Choir to Carnegie Hall for a widely acclaimed performance in 1988. He has continued the Choir’s tradition of excellence with oratorio performances and regular concerts, both sacred and secular. During a distinguished military career with The United States Army Field Band of Washington D.C.,

Tenor Joel Dulyea traveled the world with the Soldiers’ Chorus singing public concerts for the Office of the Secretary of the Army. The Chorus performed as guest artists with many regional orchestras plus the renowned Boston Pops, National Symphony Orchestra and The London Symphony Orchestra. The Chorus became a favorite of Maestro Eric Kunzel who invited them to perform with the Cincinnati Pops, The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and for television broadcasts of The National Memorial Day Tribute from Washington D.C. Dulyea frequently was featured as a soloist in formal concerts. As a recitalist and chamber music participant, he performed on educational outreach recitals for elementary through college students in 49 States, Mexico, Canada and in India.

During the last decade of his Army career, Sergeant Major Dulyea served as The Soldiers’ Chorus Supervisor, Concert Band and Chorus Road Manager, Production Supervisor, Equal Opportunity Trainer and Promotion Advisory Board Member. As Tour Manager he coordinated and managed over 500 public performances before audiences totaling over 1.5 million. For his service SGM Joel Dulyea was awarded many decorations, highest among them were two Presidential Meritorious Service Medals and The Presidential Legion of Merit Medal.

Prior to his military career Mr. Dulyea sang with the Detroit Opera Theatre, Des Moines Summer Opera, The International Opera Festival in Las Palmas of the Grand Canary Islands, The University of Michigan Chamber Choir, The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, Muskegon Community College Choir, The Miss Michigan Pageant (yes he did), Reeths-Puffer School Choirs and the children’s choir at First Christian Church in Muskegon. He is a proud graduate of Muskegon County Public Schools, The University of Michigan and Bowie State University in Maryland, holding degrees in Vocal Performance plus an MA in Counseling Psychology. Currently he enjoys the collaboration of singing with the Central United Methodist Church Choir, the White Lake Choral and His Men from Grand Haven. On Mondays he can be found volunteering with Kids Food Basket in Muskegon.

David Wikman, Music Director, is a native of Muskegon and a product of the Muskegon Public Schools. His undergraduate work was completed at Hope College and his Master of Music degree is from Western Michigan University. Wikman formed the Muskegon Chamber Choir in 1963. He brought the Chamber Choir to Carnegie Hall for a widely acclaimed performance in 1988. He has continued the Choir’s tradition of excellence with oratorio performances and regular concerts, both sacred and secular.

As a baritone soloist, Wikman has appeared with the West Shore Symphony Orchestra, the Lansing Choral Society, the Battle Creek Symphony, the Manistee Symphony and Chorus, the Zeeland Choral Society, and the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra. A Baroque specialist, he has been widely heard in the works of Bach, Handel, Purcell, and lesser-known Italian composers. As a chorister, he has sung J.S. Bach’s Mass in b minor and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Robert Shaw and Brahms’ A German Requiem under Michael Morgan. Mr. Wikman also is an Adjudicator for both choral and solo and ensemble festivals through the Michigan School Vocal Music Association.

He is an Emeritus member of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association and an active member of the American Choral Directors Association.
