Reading:

Task 1 Look at the image and read the opening extract underneath. Have a go at answering the questions.

“Go on, I dare you!” Ralph muttered boisterously across the table to Harry, with a grin etched across his mischievous face. “Go on, Harry, rub the magic coin!”

“Ha! Don’t be so silly! There’s no way that rubbing a stupid, old coin will make me shrink!” Harry laughed, as he picked up the coin and started rubbing it vigorously. “You see! Nothing!” he announced, pointing at his friend.

Later that evening, the dare was long forgotten, forgotten until midnight when everything changed…

Questions:

What will happen after midnight?

Why do some people do stupid things when they’re ‘dared’ to do so?

Would you ever do something silly to impress your friends?

Is it good to be a daring person?

How would you respond if you were dared to do something that you know wasn’t right?

Challenge: Write a question or two of your own about the image.

Remember these different ways of starting sentences?

Try to use each of these starters to write a variety of sentences about courage or being brave. You could start with a boring, simple sentence such as:

I was brave when I when I saw a spider. This could become:Terrified, I entered the room, palms sweating and teeth chattering as in the corner, I spied

a creature whose shadow cast on the wall above…

Can you hear how much more tense the second version is?

Have a go.

Challenge: Write the same sentence using all six different openers from the grid.

PSHEThis week we thought it would be a good opportunity to look at the last set of Secondary School transition sessions. You completed the first 4 over the last couple of weeks, so should be quite familiar with them. These would be great activities for you to complete with your parents/older brothers and sisters. As the transition to your new school approaches, please make sure you are talking it through with the people who are closest to you. Remember, you can always post on the blog, ask questions when Mrs Bridges or Miss Hoffman ring you, or ask questions in school.

10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1)      Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2)      Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3)      Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4)      Never give out your passwords.

5)      Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6)      Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7)      Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8)      Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9)      Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
