Classical Conversations – Challenge 1 Weekly Schedule – 2021 – 2022 This weekly schedule is based on the 2021 – 2022 Challenge 1 Guide. This weekly schedule is NOT meant to be a replacement to your guide but rather as a help to break down the work into a 4 day school week. There are times when I do not put everything from the guide into the schedule and I will add a note to see the guide. I have highlighted these times in red. I also use red to highlight other things like due dates coming up. Other changes that I have made in the weekly schedule are explained in the By Subject Explanation on the next page. Printing – I don’t know if the margins default to how I created it or your default settings but if you need to change it, go to Layout – Margins and then choose “Narrow”. The planner starts on Page 5. I print the planner single sided but if you want to print double sided, start with WEEK 2 (page 8). Week 1 is actually 3 pages because Latin is special for week 1 so it got its own page. Every other week is 2 pages. Classical Conversations – Challenge 1 Weekly Schedule – 2021 – 2022

This weekly schedule is based on the 2021 – 2022 Challenge 1 Guide. This weekly schedule is NOT meant to be a replacement to your guide but rather as a help to break down the work into a 4 day school week. There are times when I do not put everything from the guide into the schedule and I will add a note to see the guide. I have highlighted these times in red. Printing – I don’t know if the margins default to how I created it or your default settings but if you need to change it, go to Layout – Margins and then choose “Narrow”. Customizing to your Community Day: I use “Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4”. If you are using the Word version, you can easily customize this to your actual days of the week. BY SUBJECT EXPLANATIONS

Math - We use different math curriculums and we end up on different schedules. The guide is on a 2 week cycle starting on week 2 with the following assignments

First Week - Complete assigned lessons, then check answers. Bring questions to seminar.

Second Week – Complete assigned lessons, then check answers. Take test, then check answers. Bring questions to seminar

This Weekly Schedule - For each day, I put Lesson ________ for you to fill in the Lesson # that you are on. I don’t ever put Test because there is no way of knowing when this test will fall for each student. I would recommend you fill in the lesson #s the day after community and if it is a test day, just cross out lesson and put test. On the 4 th day, I put “Bring questions to seminar”. Your director will give you more instructions on what kind of questions to bring to class. Note: The guide has special assignments on Week 1 and Week 9 and I have highlighted these in Blue on the schedule.

Physical Science - Physical Science goes in a 2 week cycle for each module except on the Week 2, there is no lab journal/lab report.

First Week – Write results in your lab journal for the assigned experiment and type a formal lab report. (Note: typing a formal report is only on weeks 4, 6, 8) AND Read Module and define bold faced terms. Study figures, examples and complete “On your Own” questions. Complete Module’s study Guide.

Second Week – Re-read Module. Take the test on the Module. Write the set up for the assigned experiment in your lab journal (Title, Author, Purpose/Hypothesis, Materials, and Procedure)

This Weekly Schedule – First week - I put the lab journal/lab report on day 1. You might want to consider moving that on your day that you have more time if that is not your day 1. I have taking the Module reading and broken it into sections that go along with the OYOs. To save on space, I do not put each time “study figures, examples”. So an example would be “Read Module 1 pages 1 – 4 and define terms. Do OYO 1.1 – 1.3” On Day 4, I add to complete the Module Study Guide. I include the page #s and these are the page #s from the textbook not the student notebook if you are using that.

Second Week - This is the week that you are re-reading the module, taking a test and writing the set up. I have re-reading the module on the first 2 days, the test on the 3rd day, and the write up on the 4th day. If you don’t feel like your student needs to re-read the module, you might want to consider moving some of the First Week reading and OYOs to the Second Week assignments.

Traditional Logic - This subject is only for the first semester and it is pretty straightforward. You read a chapter a week and the workbook already has the exercises divided into Day 1 – 4 for you. The readings are not very long so I put it all on Day 1. There is a Quiz/Final Exam book that you can purchase from Memoria Press but these are not included in the Challenge Guide. Since many families use these, I added them on Day 4 and highlighted them in green and put optional next to them. If they are not optional for your student, you might want to take out that word each week. Or if you are not using them at all, you might want to take out that sentence from each week.

Latin – In Challenge 1, they do not list out the grammar #s or vocabulary pages. They assign the work by lesson #s and you are expected to learn the grammar and vocab and complete the exercises in that lesson. Each lesson is broken into sections and I have broken the daily work by these sections and color coded them. Sometimes a day will have 1 or 2 sections and sometimes it will only have 1 section. Very rarely does it have 3 sections but it was sometimes necessary.

Below is an example of one day and you can see that 3 sections were assigned. If you have to look in all 4 rows to get the assignment for Section 1. I hope this isn’t too confusing. So the section 1 assignment ends up being – Reading Pg 72, Grammar #72, Vocabulary Pg 73 and Exercises – None. Section 2 is Reading Pg 73-74, Grammar None, Vocab None and Exercises #84 – 87.

This example does not have a translation but some weeks have a translation assigned which are then discussed in class. You will notice that they are on different days of the week.

So if you move things around, you will want to move them around by section. If you are interested in scaling the Latin (most people do in Challenge 1), then I would suggest that you pick at least one exercise in each section. So in the above example, you would maybe do exercise #84 and #85 and exercise #88. It would be helpful if you as a parent looked at the exercises with your student each week. I would suggest that you choose grammar exercises in each section and then maybe just do a couple of the longer translation exercises that are assigned for each lesson. Or maybe only do the evens or the odds. Or maybe only do translation exercises occasionally and not every week. You will figure out your groove. Your director is there to support you as well. Also feel free to email me any time. 😊 We got this!!

American Literature - This is another subject that is pretty straightforward except that it is a big guessing game on where to put the assignments. I don’t know how long the worksheets take and honestly, my Ch 1 student didn’t do most of the worksheets at this point because it was review. But I put them all on the schedule. This is a subject that your student will just need to find their own groove on. My Ch B student did LTW all in one day. Unlike Challenge A and B, you read some books that you don’t write essays for. For most books, you will be reading one book a week. If a book has 2 weeks to read, it is noted in the guide and I have highlighted in red to make it stand out. For the reading assignments, you could divide the # of pages into 4 days and put page #s on each day. Sometimes the visual of seeing that they have 50 pages on one day will make an impact on if they miss a day, then they have 100! pages the next day, etc etc.

American Government/Debate - I broke Govt and Debate into two separate categories on my planner even though they are technically one strand.

American Govt - There are 3 parts of this subject

1. Read and annotate the assigned documents from the list below, take from Words Aptly Spoken: American Documents. The director will assign 1 or 2 of the documents as the focus work. And the guide says to read the remaining if time allows. They are never more than 4 documents so I just put one on each day. On the weeks that there are less than 4 documents, I make a note on day 3 or day 4 that there are no additional documents. If you only want your student to read the assigned document from the director, then you will need to update the schedule.

2. From the guide: “ Each week students should summarize a single document that the director has chosen for the focused reading and discussion. This summary should be completed after the document has been discusses. The pattern will be : read and annotate, discuss, then summarize.” So the summary will be on a work that was read the previous week then discussed. I have “Document Summary” listed on all 4 days but it will really only take one day so you may want to edit the schedule to put it only on one day each week.

3. Memory work: I list the memory work and the due date on Day 1 and then I just put “Memory Work” on the the other 3 days.

Debate - I put the reading or video assignment on day 1 and then the other assignment on day 2. And then day 3 and 4, I just put “Continue working”. There is no way for me to really break this into multiple days.
