Opening Hymn
“Let Every Christian Pray,” vss. 1, 2 & 3
1. Let every Christian pray, this day and every day, Come, Holy
Spirit, come! Was not the church we love commissioned from above?
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
2. The Spirit brought to birth the church of Christ on earth to
seek and save the lost. God never has withdrawn, since that
tremendous dawn, the gifts at Pentecost.
3. Only the Spirit’s power can fit us for this hour: Come, Holy
Spirit, come! Instruct, inspire, unite, and help us see your light,
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
Faith Sharing with Children Pastor Jerry
Lingering Results
Sometimes we can see the effect today of something that happened a
long time ago. When we walk into a deep woods, we see the results
of seeds that fell to the ground long ago. When we walk onto the
church grounds, we see the results of decisions long ago to plant a
church here in Georgetown.
After Jesus ascended into heaven long ago, his followers waited for
God’s Spirit to tell them what to do. The Spirit came on a very
special day called Pentecost. We can see the lingering results of
what those followers did. They spread the word about Jesus and
started the worldwide Christian church. Pray after me:
God, we bless your Holy Spirit . . . Long ago, your Spirit gave
people courage . . . to tell the world about your Son. . . Give us
your Spirit to carry on the story. . . Amen.

Call to Confession Pastor Jerry
Prayer of Confession (Unison)
Holy Spirit, speak truth to our troubled hearts. Discomfort us in
our complacency. Stir up a yearning within us for justice and love.
Guide us away from paths of sin and sorrow onto paths of truth and
righteousness. Cleanse us and make us new. In your mercy and grace,
we pray. Silent prayer or meditation.
Assurance of Pardon John 17
When God blesses us with gifts of the Spirit, we are renewed and
made whole. Rejoice, sisters and brothers, God’s steadfast love
endures forever. Thanks be to God!
Musical Response
“Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart,” v. 1
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart. free it from sin, through all
its pulses move. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as you are, and make
me love you as I ought to love.
Prayer for Illumination Pastor Jerry
Epistle Reading
Romans 8:22-27 NIRV
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains
until now;
23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first
fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption,
the redemption of our bodies.
24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope.
For who hopes for what is seen?
25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with
patience.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know
how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs
too deep for words.
27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the
Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to
the will of God.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!
New Testament Lesson
Acts 2:1-21 select vss. NRSV
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one
place.
2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a
violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were
sitting.
3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue
rested on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living
in Jerusalem.
6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because
each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.
7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are
speaking Galileans?
8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native
language?
12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does
this mean?”
13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new
wine.”
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and
addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let
this be known to you, and listen to what I say.
15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine
o’clock in the morning.
16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out
my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be
saved.’
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!
Sermon “Creative Fire” Pastor Jerry
Affirmation of Faith
God the Holy Spirit
to God and to one another.
The Spirit enables people to receive forgiveness
as they forgive one another
and to enjoy the peace of God
as they make peace among themselves.
In spite of their sin, the Spirit gives people power
to become representatives of Jesus Christ
and his gospel of reconciliation to all. Amen.

Call for the Offering Pastor Jerry
Offertory
D. Akers, arr. M. Hayes
There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it’s
the Spirit of the Lord. There are sweet expressions on each face,
and I know they feel the presence of the Lord. Sweet Holy Spirit,
sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here with us, filling us with your
love. And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise. Without
a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave
this place.
Prayer of Dedication (unison)
Great God, with gratitude we bring our gifts to you. Bless us and
our offerings. May our resources be a source of healing and hope,
of joy and justice in our world. In Christ’s name, we pray.
Amen.
Closing Hymn
“Two Thousand Years since Bethlehem,” vss. 1, 4 & 5
1. Two thousand years since Bethlehem first welcomed Jesus’ birth,
the startling truth began to dawn that God had come to earth. And
as he grew and lived and taught a different way unfurled: a way of
joy and love and peace, a new start for the world.
4. Two thousand years since Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came in
sound of mighty, rushing wind and tongues of living flame. a gift
to all who will believe and live the Jesus way. the power of God we
may receive, a new start from today!
5. Two thousand years of Christian faith have changed our history,
for Jesus is the Lord of time and of eternity. For all who seek a
better way, than failure, sin, and pain. still Jesus Christ makes
all things new: a chance to start again!
