Last week we learned about the water cycle. We learned about evaporation which turns water into a gas. When water is in a gas state the molecules are spread far away from each other. For water to become a gas it needs to be heated up.

Last week we also learned about precipitation. We learned that one form of precipitation is called rain and this is when the water molecules cool back down and become water droplets that fall back to the earth as a liquid water.

But there are 2 other types of precipitation snow and hail. Hail is little pieces of ice falling back to

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students will pretend to be weathermen. Look outside and tell or draw the weather. Help draw a thermometer that your child can draw on to show if it is hot or cold out.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: practice using scissors to cut playdough. Roll the playdough to different thicknesses with your child to make the cutting easier or harder.

Art: Students will make art of each of the 3 states of water. Draw a puddle (liquid) draw squiggly blue or gray lines (gas) and draw a square for ice (solid) next to each of them draw a thermometer your child can color a red line on to show hot (line is the tallest), warm (middle), coldest (shortest). Gas- hottest temperature. Liquid- warm. Ice- coldest

earth. These 2 types of precipitation are solid states of water.

When something is a solid it is able to hold a shape. When something is a liquid or gas it takes the shape of anything you put it in.

When water falls as a liquid it means the temperature is warm.

When it falls as a solid it means the temperature is cold.

In the spring and summer when the sun is closer us the air temperature outside is warmer and we the precipitation we get is rain

In the winter when the sun is the farthest away from us the air temperature outside can get very cold and the precipitation we get is waters solid states either snow or hail.

Yesterday we learned about temperature which is affected by how close or far we are from the sun. When we are closer to the sun the atmosphere (air around us is warmer or hot) like in the summer. When we are farther from the sun the atmosphere (air around us is colder) like in winter. Last week we learned that when water falls from the sky it is called precipitation. When the water falls as a liquid we say it is raining. Rain happens when the air outside is warmer than 32 degrees F.

In liquid water the molecules are closer together than when they are a gas but still spread out. Liquid water

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students will pretend to be weathermen. Pretend today it is raining. Help your child get out clothing, raincoat, boots, an umbrella to show what people should wear in the rain.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Create a large raindrop showing by ripping blue pieces of paper and gluing them inside a large raindrop so that they are spread out like the molecule’s indie liquid water.

Art: Create a cloud with raindrops falling from it. Use cotton balls and pull them apart

Yesterday we learned about rain and liquid water. Today we are going to learn about snow. This type of precipitation happens when it is cold out like in the winter.

Snow is soft but it is a solid state of water. In the snow state the water molecules are closer together than in the water state. Because the molecules are closer together than in water snow will hold a shape and can be molded. That is why snow is great for building snowmen and igloos.

If it is snowing is the weather air temperature outside warm or cold? - Cold

How should we dress if it is snowing outside? – Review clothes we wear in winter.

Music and Movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0tVmABwMPs

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students can pretend to shovel snow and build a snowman. If you are willing you can use different bed sheets on the floor to pretend it is the snow they can shovel out of the way or roll into balls to try to build a snow man.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Cut strips of paper and layer them to create a snowflake. Use white paint, white tissue paper, and or white cotton balls.

Art: Draw the outline of a snowman on a piece of paper then have your child use cotton balls to build a snowman.

Science/discovery: Make fake snow with your child using either conditioner and

water. Today we are going to learn about hail. This type of precipitation happens when the air temperature is freezing out like in the winter and it is so cold that as liquid rain falls from clouds it freezes into ice before it reaches the ground.

Ice is a hard and a solid state of water. In the ice state the water molecules are the closest together they can get. Because the molecules are so close together ice holds its shape and its shape cannot be changed without tools heat.

How should we dress when it is cold outside? – Review clothes we wear in winter.

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students should help create the ice cubes for tomorrows art activity. Use food coloring in an ice cube tray with water then freeze with a small popsicle stick or cue tip in it different color ice cubes that your child can use to paint

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Use Legos or connecting blocks and work on hand eye coordination, having your child push them together and using 2 hands at the same time so that they are holding on what they already built while adding new blocks.

Art: Make and decorate mittens

Science/discovery: Have child help you place small toy objects in a shallow dish/tray of water in the morning and put it in the freezer so that it can freeze and your child can try to use tools to chip out the toys.

Writing: practice drawing/tracing horizontal and vertical lines by playing the start and stop game like freeze dance.

Literacy: Books- Sit with your child to look at books. Work on book handling and care,

Phonics: Work on identifying/matching skill for this month’s letters:

Use letters c/g/j/v on flash cards laid out on a table. Then have a bowl of the letters c/g/j/v on cut on pieces of paper so that you have 4 of each letter in the bowl. Mix the in the bowl and have the student draw the letters out and match them to the large letters on the flash cards. Say each letters name as they are pulling them from the bowl and matching. Encourage student to say letter if speech skills are present.

Math: Number Recognition/ Identification

You can create 2 sets of 0-10 flash cards:

lay out a field of 3 and ask your little learner to point to a number

or match.

This week we have been learning about the different states of water and different types of weather we get if the temperature outside is hot or cold. Yesterday we learned about hail which is precipitation that is ice falling to the earth and that happens when the temperature outside is freezing. We also learned yesterday that ice is a hard and a solid state of water. Ice holds its shape and its shape cannot be changed without tools or heat.

We know that for water to go from a gas to a liquid to a solid the temperature gets colder and colder.

But what happens when we use heat on ice or snow? - they melt and become the liquid form of water again.

Music and Movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTD6YibIM_I

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students can pretend it is really cold outside and it is snowy and Icey outside. How should we practice dressing for the cold icey weather?- snow boots, snow pants or think pants, coat, hat gloves, scarf. Practice identifying the body parts all of these things go on to keep them warm either as they put them on or as they lay them on the floor as if building a person out of the clothing.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Practice hand eye coordination and continue working with your child on using 2 hands together while the string beads together. You could also use thin string and cut up some straws to use as beads if you need beads.

Art: Use the different colored ice cubes that your child and you made yesterday to paint as the colored ice melts it will make some of the nicest water color painting ever.

Science/discovery: Have child help you place small toy objects in a shallow dish/tray of water in the morning again and put it in the freezer so that it can freeze, and your child can try

Phonics: Work on matching all lowercase letters from the alphabet. Lay out letters on flashcards 3 at a time and direct your child to match a letter to one of the letters laid out in the field of 3 by telling them “match i with i”. After they follow the direction to match switch all the letters with new letters and have them match a new letter. If student does not match correctly. Show them the correct match then have them do it before switching out all the letters.

Work on identification by pointing for all lowercase letters of the alphabet. Lay out letters on flashcards 3 at a time and directing your child to point to one of the letters laid out in the field of 3. After they follow the direction to point switch all the
