Good Morning Year 5!

Welcome to this week’s home learning. We are continuing with Macbeth but moving on to area in Maths.

In our school bubbles we are starting a History project! The children in school will be learning about World War 1 and World War 2 and we want to share this learning with you at home! These tasks are for you to do whenever you can and everything will be on our wordpress blog for you to dip in to! We are reading War Horse by Michael Murpurgo, watching Goodnight Mister Tom (ask your parents if you can watch this at home) and learning about the changes and the impact 2 world wars had on Great Britain.

Check out our shared Year 5 & 6 youtube page for videos!

Keep working hard- it will pay off!

Gem challenge

Today you need to use your Topaz power when doing your writing tasks today. Check your work for any mistakes, use the correct grammar, and use full sentences when needed. Also, when talking to others completing their work you can listen to their ideas and control your voice when doing so. You are doing great Year 5 and we are sure you will do amazing today!

English task

William Shakespeare

This task should take 15 minutes.

Begin today by reading pages 47-50. The pages are at the bottom of this document.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Everything is beginning to fall apart.

Lady Macbeth is full of guilt over her part in Duncan’s murder and is slowly going mad. The people of Scotland have rebelled and formed an army to fight against Macbeth. He has lost their respect and their support.

· What do you think of Macbeth’s actions in this extract?

· Do you think Macbeth is scared?

· Even when the opposing army get closer and closer, Macbeth still doesn’t prepare to fight. He is so confident he is safe, he does nothing when danger approaches. Do you think he is safe? Do you think he is untouchable?

Write down your answers to these questions. Remember to write in full sentences.

Then watch the next chapter in animation! https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/english-ks2-macbeth-ep7/zdn7scw

SPAG task

This task should take around 30 minutes.

Proof reading, editing and improving our work.

When we complete a writing task, it can be easy to move onto the next thing. However, we are only human and can make mistakes without realising. That’s why proof reading is so important!

This is when editing and improving can be done. Watch this small clip about the basics of proof reading for some inspiration. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zr6bxyc/articles/z7vhsrd

Your task today is to look at your writing from yesterday and make it better! You will need to edit then re-write the sentence with the improvements included. Here is an example of a bad piece of writing.

Out on the heath, night was falling. Banquo and his son Fleance had been hunting and were on their way back to Dunsinane. We shood head back now dad fleance said. “Yes, we definitely should” said Banquo. They both looked at eech other and felt like somethin wasn’t write.

· This short paragraph has many spelling mistakes that were not corrected.

· We should always use capital letters when using someone's name.

· The dialogue does not go anywhere and provides very little detail about what they are thinking.

· There is very little thought into how things are being spoken and ‘said’ is used too often without uplevelling.

· There are missing speech marks and it should be “We should head back now Dad”

· The paragraph is too short and could use more information to set the scene.

Here is an improved version of the example above.

Think about the criteria that we used before and if you can see each of them being used in your work. Use expanded noun phrases to add detail and clauses to improve your work further.

Maths task

The task should take around 30 minutes.

Finding the areas of triangles

If you know how to find the area of a rectangle (l x w) then finding the area of a triangle is really easy!

Think of triangles as half of rectangles. So to find the area of a triangle, we find the area like we would a rectangle- length multiplied by width. In this example, it would be 8cm x 4cm. (32cm2) But then we need to halve this answer (divide by 2) This will give us the area of the triangle- 16cm2.

This video gives a great explanation of how to do this.

The first question is a rectangle so find the area by multiplying length by width as normal.

For questions 2-7 multiply length by width then divide by 2.

Don’t forget the cm2 in your answers!

Challenge: find the area of these triangles by identifying the length and width. There will be a 3rd length- the diagonal length. This is not needed to find the area.

For example: 1. 8 x 6 = 48 ÷ 2 = 24m2

The diagonal length (10m) isn’t required.
