Second Class Work – Week beginning 25 / 05 / 2020 Hello everyone, I hope that you are all still keeping well. It is hard to believe that it is the last week in May already. Hopefully you have enjoyed your weekends. Thankfully things have become a little easier with the gradually easing of some of the restrictions. I know it is hard to keep motivated at this time but every little bit of work helps. Below is the suggested work for this week. As always it intended to be helpful not a cause of stress or anxiety. Please choose what is doable in your home. Please contact me if you need anything or if you child has completed something that they would like to share. Kind regards, Mrs. E. Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all still keeping well. It is hard to believe that it is the last week in May already. Hopefully you have enjoyed your weekends. Thankfully things have become a little easier with the gradually easing of some of the restrictions. I know it is hard to keep motivated at this time but every little bit of work helps.Below is the suggested work for this week. As always it intended to be helpful not a cause of stress or anxiety. Reading Class novel (read at own individual pace) while engaging with comprehension and reading strategies

Before reading : Predict what is going to happen next.

During reading : 1. Questioning. Include questions to which the answers can be found in the story,

as well as ‘I wonder why…’ questions (the class have had lots of practice with this)

2. Find and take note of 5 words that you are unsure of exact meaning.3. Explore:

- How do you feel about the main character? Why?- Why does the character act / feel a certain way?- Does the story make sense to you?- Can you link or relate anything you have read to your own life? /

How does this story remind you of your own life?

After reading :1. Summarise what you have read.2. Discuss favourite part of story. Why? Is there anything you don’t like about

the story? Why?3. Use dictionary to find definition of above 5 words. Either write out the

Story https://www.storylineonline.net/books/library-lion/https://youtu.be/T18NCobS43c

Library Lion (Duration 12:00 mins)Miss Merriweather, the head librarian, is very particular about rules in the library. No running allowed. And you must be quiet. But when a lion comes to the library one day, no one is sure what to do. There aren't any rules about lions in the library. And, as it turns out, this lion seems very well suited to library visiting. His big feet are quiet on the library floor. He makes a comfy backrest for the children at story hour. And he never roars in the library, at least not anymore. But when something terrible happens, the lion quickly comes to the rescue in the only way he knows how.Questions1. The Lion became very helpful in the library once he learned the rule. Can you

name some of the things he did to help? 2. The Lion broke a rule in the library? Usually it is not good to break rules, why

was it okay for him to break it this time? 3. Have you been to your local library of the mobile library at school? What rules

have you noticed? Why do they have these rules?

Writing Handwriting book – continue

Creative writing: A day at the beach. In SPHE we are going to learn about water safety. To link in with this I would like you to write a short story about a day at the beach.

Make a word web to organise your ideas. Have a beginning, middle and an end. A problem that has to be overcome can make the story exciting. You can always make a first draft and the re write and add to your story. Think about who the characters are and what they are going to do.

Oral I have attached some would you rather cards. These cards ask questions about which scenarios you would rather? The idea is to debate each question with someone in the family.

SESE

Project : Time Capsule(To be completed over a number of weeks)

As you all know we are living through history at the moment. In years to come we will all look back and tell people about the time we lived through the Covid 19 pandemic. To help with this I thought that it would be a nice idea for the children in 2nd class to create a time capsule. A time capsule is a container that is filled with present day things, such as newspapers, photos, letters etc. that is then hidden away in a closet or buried in your garden, for a time, and then opened by your future self, or someone of your choosing. A present for the future!

I have attached some worksheets to help to create the time capsule. You can include as much or as little as you like. It can be a personal capsule or a project for the family. Ice cream/butter tubs are useful or just about any container that isn’t needed anymore. It is not essential to dig up the garden either simply putting the container in a cupboard or in the attic is perfect.

Below are some YouTube links one to a school who buried a time capsule in the year 2000 and then excavated it in 2015 and another to a group of Wexford students who have decided to make a digital time capsule during the pandemic.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmmq2t3IwYYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94EmWunwsY0

Water Safety

(To be completed over a number of weeks)

I am aware that the weather is getting nicer and we are fortunate to live near to some beautiful beaches. As fun as water can be it does pose some safety concerns. For that reason I thought that some water safety lessons would be appropriate for the next couple of weeks. Please go to https://www.teachpaws.ie/ lesson 2 if the links below don’t work.

Please talk to your child/children about water safety and complete thefollowing activities;

1. Visit https://online.flowpaper.com/7efd0784/PAWS2ENGLISHWEB/#page=6 and read through the e book aimed at 1st and 2nd class.(This ebook discusses baths, barrels, paddling pools, farms, ice, rivers, swimming pools and beaches)2. Complete the water safety questions to see how much they have learned.http://paws.edco.ie/first-and-second-classes/3. Watch this video with your kids and discuss themhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlXpm86mU90 4. Design and make your own Water Safety Poster.

Music

Listening and Responding(to be completed over a number of weeks)

Below is a link to the classical piece of music the carnival of the animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. Each movement of the piece depicts a different animal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2RPKMJmSp0&t=0sThese are the animals and the time each occurs during each clip.Pick whichever animal you want.

00:00 I - Introduction and Royal March of the Lion 02:27 II - Hens and Roosters 03:21 III - Fast Animals 04:09 IV - Turtles 06:12 V -The Elephant 07:45 VI - Kangaroos 08:46 VII - Aquarium 11:15 VIII - Donkeys 12:03 IX - The Cuckoo in the Depths of the Woods 14:26 X - Aviary (Birds) 15:32 XI - Pianists 16:58 XII - Fossils 18:20 XIII - The Swan 21:19 Finale

Please play one of the sections above and your child can then draw the animal they think the piece is representing. If they are unsure ask about the size they think the animal is? Whether it is fast or slow? Where it might live? Give as many hints as necessary. It’s not about the correct answer but discussing how the music sounds and what it makes you think of. Discuss what it was about the music that made them think it was that animal.
