Wider Curriculum

Science:Habitats and threats.Consider the questions on the powerpoint discussing habitats and the changes that humans exert on the environment

Art:Look at the insect art photopack. Use prompt questions. Looking At Insects: all insects have 3 body parts: thorax, abdomen and head.

Geography :Look at the map of Nim’s Island – it contains lots of natural features - Find them all and then explain what they are in the table given.

D&T

What does a greenhouse do? How does it work?

around them. Plants and animals are unable to make big changes to their environment, and therefore are very vulnerable to changes in their habitat.

Go outdoors and survey the local habitat and make detailed observations. Draw a sketch map of the habitat, drawing and labelling any environmental dangers they can see there.

Write a list of habitats and habitat threats. What changes to the environment can you think of and what danger would that be to the local wildlife? For example, litter can cause injury to animals. Animals can cut themselves or get tangled or trapped.

Discussion Points: (Spiders are not insects, but spiders and insects are arthropods. Anatomically, spiders differ from other arthropods in that the usual body segments are fused into two tagmata, the cephalothorax and abdomen, and joined by a small, cylindrical pedicel. Unlike insects, spiders do not have antennae).

Run through powerpoint. What A Good Insect Drawing Looks Like: Look at the image and check the level of detail. Draw everything that you can see – the more you look at the image or insect, the more detailed the drawing will be. (Look for different types of marks e.g. hard, soft, jagged, smooth…)

Complete an observational drawing of an insect using pencil.Make sure the drawing fills the whole page. Can you identify the insect you are drawing? What can you find out about its habitat, life cycle and what it eats?

Then you can design your own tropical island! Don’t forget to include natural and man-made features.

Have a look at the mini greenhouse ideas sheet and design your own greenhouse – work out what materials you need ready to make it!

Don’t forget to add an image to show what your greenhouse ‘should’ look like!

PHSE How do I feel today? My main worries.Who’s in your bubble?

What positives have come out of lockdown. What special qualities have I discovered?

Nim says she loves living on her island with her dad even though it must be hard sometimes. Imagine you were stranded on an island and write down everything you would miss.

Nim is grateful for many things on her Island – how many can you name?Being back at school this week will hopefully have you thinking about what you are grateful for – write four ’this week I am grateful for…’ love hearts for you to take home and share with your parents.

Mindfulness

This is a fantastic activity that students can “take home” with them. It can be particularly useful to do a body scan to help relax before sleep. Download our printable Body Scan Guided Meditation Script to use with your class/ child.

Students lay on the floor, with their eyes closed if they are comfortable (or they may prefer tolook at the ceiling). Encourage students to pay attention to their feet for 5 or 10 seconds.

Questions to ask during a body scan:– How does this body part feel?– Is it cold or warm?– Does it feel tight or relaxed?

Page 3: ashgreenprimary.co.uk€¦  · Web view2020-05-27 · Answer the questions for Reading 1. Reading Task 2 Draw a picture of Nim – what does she look like, what clothes is she wearing

– Is all or part of that body part touching the floor?– Or clothing?– What does that feel like?

Move on to their toes, then ankles, then calves and knees. Continue body part by body part until you reach the head. Question how each part of the body feels to bring students’ awareness to their body in the moment. If there is tightness or stress, imagine breathing the stress out of that part of the body with each exhale

This week I am grateful for… This week I am grateful for…
