A Time to Give Thanks Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Romans 5: 1-5 There are times in our lives when we are challenged with difficulties, distresses, pain and even darkness. There is no doubt, that in those times, it is hard to give thanks to God. It seems that it is almost too much to ask. During those difficult times, it might seem that nothing goes right— that we’ve been dealt a bad hand. It is natural that we might find it difficult to offer up thanksgiving at times like those. But as faithful Christians, that is what we are challenged to do. I think that it is safe to say that no one lives a full life without struggling mightily from time to time. Struggles can come from our own decisions, but just as likely we may face obstacles through no fault of our own. We may face difficulties created by others, or by societal changes, or personal conflicts. We may struggle because of grief. Whatever leads us to stumble one thing is assured. That we are justified by our faith. Because of that, through Jesus Christ, we have obtained grace and hope. That is worthy of thanksgiving. In the above scripture passage, Paul tells us that we should even be thankful for the suffering that we may endure. We give thanks because suffering strengthens us Page | 1 Trinity Volume 7, Issue 11 November 2019

A Time to Give Thanks

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Romans 5: 1-5

There are times in our lives when we are challenged with difficulties, distresses, pain and even darkness. There is no doubt, that in those times, it is hard to give thanks to God. It seems that it is almost too much to ask. During those difficult times, it might seem that nothing goes right—that we’ve been dealt a bad hand. It is natural that we might find it difficult to offer up thanksgiving at times like those. But as faithful Christians, that is what we are challenged to do.

I think that it is safe to say that no one lives a full life without struggling mightily from time to time. Struggles can come from our own decisions, but just

as likely we may face obstacles through no fault of our own. We may face difficulties created by others,

or by societal changes, or personal conflicts.

We give thanks because suffering strengthens us and gives us hope. So, as we move closer to Thanksgiving, let us keep the words of Paul on our hearts. That whatever we may be facing, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is assured. And for that we can all give thanks!

Blessings,Charles
